Hapjeong kaisendon, solo bar seat and ₩4,500 parking: Makise Hapjeong

In short

Makise Hapjeong is a kaisendon (sashimi rice bowl) restaurant about a 5-minute walk from Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. The writer ate alone at a 2-seat bar facing away from the kitchen, ordered the kaisendon (₩23,000) and a cider (₩3,000), and especially raved about the yellowtail, soy-marinated shrimp and tuna. Makise Hapjeong has no parking, but a nearby lot is an option, and the verdict is a return-worthy spot that works for both solo meals and dates.

Makise Hapjeong is my go-to place. I eat here on meal vouchers I'm given, but I also pay out of my own pocket, so it's a genuinely great spot. I went solo this time, and the bar seating made eating alone really easy! Of course it's fine for dates too (。>ㅅ<。) So let me introduce you to this Seoul kaisendon spot, Makise Hapjeong~

Is Makise Hapjeong comfortable for eating alone?

Besides the bar facing the kitchen, Makise Hapjeong has 2-seat bar seats where you sit with your back to the kitchen. Those are the comfy ones for solo diners, and the interior is a warm wood tone.

My favorite kind of interior is wood tones with cute little props, warm lighting and even some plants, and Makise is exactly that, so it totally won me over ♪( 'ω' و(و"

I'd always told myself that next time I came alone I'd try sitting here, so today I took the bar seat with my back to the kitchen~

Makise Hapjeong menu and prices

Kaisendon is the signature at Makise Hapjeong, and there are several sake-don (raw fish rice bowls) as well. This day I ordered the kaisendon (₩23,000) and a cider (₩3,000).

The yellowtail here is seriously good... I want a yellowtail sake-don... but today I ordered the kaisendon and a cider, haha ⸜( ◜࿁◝ )⸝︎︎‎

Seasoned pickled radish side at Makise Hapjeong

Seasoned pickled radish and cider over ice

Makise Hapjeong also has seasoned pickled radish (danmuji), and I love that it's not just plain pickled radish. Kaisendon is rice plus raw fish after all, so it can get heavy or you can get tired of it, and a bite of this radish totally resets your palate.

They brought the cider first, and a restaurant that gives you a cup of ice is the best..... love it ദ്ദി( ¯꒳¯ )

Also, each table has instructions on how to eat it.ᐟ.ᐟ And the great thing about Makise is that they even do an encore sashimi (if there was a piece of sashimi you remember most, they'll prepare it again depending on ingredient availability)....

How does the kaisendon at Makise Hapjeong taste?

The kaisendon at Makise Hapjeong comes topped with fish cut so that each piece just fills one bite, and the yellowtail was the most impressive. The grand kaisendon arrived, and as always the look of it is so good. My mouth is literally watering.

I started with the white fish first. Can you see the shine on the fish? Looks so good ㅠ I want to eat it again ㅠ

The yellowtail is seriously amazing

Seriously, look at this!!!! Every time I come to Makise Hapjeong, the yellowtail is just in.sane. Winter's coming, so I'm definitely going for the yellowtail sake-don. It fills your whole mouth and I got dizzy the moment I ate it.

A piece of soy-cured mackerel sashimi

Salmon, squid and mackerel

In order, that's salmon, cuttlefish and mackerel. The salmon had just the right amount of fat and was so good with the radish sprouts on top. The cuttlefish was crunchy and nutty, and the mackerel was cured in soy sauce, so it had even more savory depth!!

A piece of soy-marinated shrimp from the kaisendon
A piece of soy-cured tuna sashimi

Soy-marinated shrimp, tuna and egg to finish

And these are the soy-marinated shrimp and the tuna. The shrimp, what can I even say... crunchy texture and rich, creamy shrimp ㅠ The tuna is also cured in soy sauce, and the tuna aroma filling your mouth is so good, and it melts. I like that Makise cuts the fish so each piece just fills one bite. I was insanely satisfied.

And this egg I ate separately at the end to cleanse my palate haha It's lightly seasoned, but it's still egg, so it worked well for that.

I normally can't finish even one bowl of rice, okay? But when the food is good, sometimes I finish the whole bowl. Makise Hapjeong is that kind of place. A place where you clean your bowl and leave nothing behind.

Is Makise Hapjeong good for solo meals and dates?

Makise Hapjeong is my favorite go-back place: easy to eat alone, with fresh, tasty fish. I've been all praise, but I think you'll see why once you look at the photos haha

I came solo today, but it's also a spot I often go to for dates. If you like raw fish, I guarantee you'll leave satisfied. I'm going soon for the yellowtail sake-don. Go before I eat all the yellowtail haha

I highly recommend my go-back place, the Seoul kaisendon spot 'Makise Hapjeong' ( ö )/♡
