Suwon pizzeria, margherita wrapped in Caesar salad: The European
In short
The European Haenggung Main Branch (더유로피언 행궁본점) is a wood-fired pizza restaurant on the craft workshop street in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. Ordering by phone through Catch Order, the writer and her boyfriend shared a margherita for 23,000 won and a Caesar salad for 20,000 won at a seat where they could watch pizzas come out of the oven, wrapping the pizza in the Caesar salad like ssam (Korean leaf wraps). For two light eaters, one pizza and one salad at The European were plenty, and the pizza was good enough to finish down to the last bit of crust.

I visited Suwon's Haenggung-dong for the first time in a while, and while hunting for a good place to eat I found a wood-fired pizza spot run by a chef from the Shilla Hotel: The European Haenggung Main Branch (더유로피언 행궁본점). So here's my review, haha!

Where is The European Haenggung Main Branch in Suwon?
You'll spot The European Haenggung Main Branch about 50m into the craft street (gongbang-geori) on the left side of Hwaseong Fortress. The exterior mixes a hanok-style roof with brick walls, which felt warm and homey. There were lots of notices posted around the entrance and windows, so it's easy to check the shop info too ~

Inside The European Haenggung Main Branch
The inside is all wood tones with an antique chandelier on top, and the atmosphere was so good!! The wooden rafters on the ceiling and the red curtains were the highlights, and when sunlight came in through the windows it felt warm and even a little bit European, you know? ~ (crying)
The tables and chairs are nicely spaced out, so it looks like a comfortable place to sit and spend some time. One side had all kinds of canned goods on display, which was surprisingly fun to look at, hahaha (total European vibes!!)

How does The European make its wood-fired pizza?
The European Haenggung Main Branch serves authentic wood-fired pizza made by a chef formerly of the Shilla Hotel in Seoul. They say it uses oak that has passed strict quality checks, and dough fermented for 38 hours and aged for 24 hours, baked at 485 degrees in a premium Stefano Ferrara oven.
I'll say more about the pizza later, but the outside was crisp and the inside chewy and nutty, so there was no dough I wanted to leave behind.

Ordering via Catch Order, plus a free drink for a review
You can order through Catch Order, so ordering from my phone was easy. This day we had the margherita (₩23,000), the Caesar salad (₩20,000), and a complimentary Sprite (₩100).

If you write a Naver review, they give you a drink as a thank-you, so that's worth knowing if you're visiting!!

As a kind of basic side dish (?), they bring something like carrot râpée, which went really well with the pizza.

Honestly I don't care much about plates and the like, but the tableware here was so pretty it was totally my taste ~
After looking around, the food came out one by one. Wood-fired pizza takes a little while to cook, but it didn't feel like it took that long.

One pizza and one salad: enough for two?
One margherita and one Caesar salad was quite a lot for two people. Doesn't it look so appetizing in the group shot?! I ordered the Caesar salad too because I thought the pizza alone might not be enough, but it was surprisingly filling, hahaha. Maybe that's because my boyfriend and I both eat small portions...
From our seat we could even see them taking the pizza out of the wood-fired oven, which was such a fun experience!! (accidental fire-gazing)

The European's margherita (₩23,000): how does it taste?
The margherita here is a classic Neapolitan pizza with fresh tomato sauce, fragrant basil, and nutty, chewy mozzarella 🍕 There are no heavy toppings, so you taste the ingredients themselves, and it was clean and mild.
With the tangy tomato sauce, the richness of the cheese, and the aroma of basil, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes pizza done back-to-basics. Above all, it's baked fresh from the oven with fresh ingredients, so the flavor really came through and it was delicious.

Wrapping the margherita in Caesar salad
My boyfriend eats the margherita with the Caesar salad, wrapping it up like a ssam (lettuce wrap), and when I copied him it was really good!! hahaha

The European's Caesar salad (₩20,000): how does it taste?
The Caesar salad had fresh greens with salty ham and a nutty dressing, a light, refreshing dish. Crispy croutons on top gave you crunchy and crispy textures at once, and the smooth dressing coated the greens evenly, so it was rich but easy to eat ~
Eaten with the pizza, it cleaned up my palate, so it's a perfect side dish 🥗
