Ikseon-dong bakery tasting counter sweet potato bread: Munhwa Bakery

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a bakery on the hanok street of Ikseon-dong in Jongno, Seoul, a two-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7. Arriving right at opening on a weekday morning meant no wait at Munhwa Bakery, a free sample of sweet potato bread at the counter tasting table, and garlic bread at 6,800 won plus cheese bread at 5,400 won packed fresh and uncut. The garlic bread was moist with plenty of garlic sauce and the cheese bread had a bold, salty-savory filling, so another visit is already planned.

My bread-blogging is back haha. I'd long wanted to visit Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong, famous as one of Seoul's three great bakeries! When a free weekday morning opened up, I jumped at the chance to go.

Munhwa Bakery — small but never to be underestimated, Jongno's go-to bakery pilgrimage spot

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what are the hours and parking?

Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. It's open daily from 11:00 to 20:00, and there's no parking on-site, so you'll need to use a nearby paid parking lot.

The hanok-style exterior was so pretty haha. The lush tree planted out front, plus someone's Ttareungyi bike parked right there lol (perfect harmony). The sunlight was so lovely the day I visited >_<,,

Was there a wait at opening on a weekday morning?

Munhwa Bakery limits entry to two groups at a time because the interior is small. Since I went right at weekday morning opening, I got in without waiting. There was no wait for me, but customers kept streaming in both before and after I entered,,,!

Bread display shelves inside Munhwa Bakery

What breads are on the shelves at Munhwa Bakery?

The bread on display looked so delicious. There weren't a huge variety of types, but the lineup was all popular items, so every single one caught my eye! The bread seemed to be displayed in small batches and kept getting restocked.

There were healthy grain breads too — injeolmi (sweet rice cake) bread, peanut bread, mugwort rice cake bread, black sesame bread. The visuals looked like they didn't skimp on ingredients,, piled high with nuts!

The dairy-based breads — milk cream bread, cheese bread, squid ink condensed milk bread — also looked generously filled with cream and filling haha,,

The loaves seemed to use rice flour — there was rice chestnut bread and rice cheese bread. Chestnut bread is my all-time favorite loaf, so I had a hard time deciding what to pick first! There was also sweet potato bread, white bean paste bread, and walnut bread that I think older folks would love too — so many options depending on your taste!!

Among them, onion bagel, coffee bread, and garlic bread each took up a big chunk of shelf space — I instantly sensed these were the store's steady bestsellers.

Fresh-baked garlic bread, packed uncut

It seems Munhwa Bakery usually cuts the coffee bread and garlic bread into easy-to-eat pieces when you buy them, but since I bought the garlic bread right as it came out, the filling could've leaked, so they packed it without cutting! I appreciated the thoughtful heads-up haha.

There's a sample table at the counter! I happened to be torn about the sweet potato bread, so I gave it a taste — the chewy, sweet sweet potato paste filling was delicious!

Every single bread on the menu felt like a can't-miss item, so I really agonized,, but in the end I bought the garlic bread I'd been curious about for a while, and the cheese bread with its cheese-oozing visual ~

How does the garlic bread taste? Moist and sweetly garlicky

Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread has plenty of garlic sauce, so the bread is moist and the garlic flavor is sweetly balanced — genuinely delicious! It was great warm, and personally I think reheating leftovers in an air fryer would make them crispy and delicious, but I couldn't leave any leftover lol!! Maybe try the coffee bread next time...?

The much-anticipated cheese bread. The bread itself was plain, savory, and chewy! The cheese filling was packed in generously, giving it a bold, salty-savory cheese flavor.

Great atmosphere, great bread~ it was a satisfying bakery tour for once haha. I'm curious about the other breads too, so I plan to visit again. With how generously they use ingredients, the taste is basically guaranteed..!?

Munhwa Bakery sign noting same-day baked, same-day sold policy

Munhwa Bakery, a Jongno bread favorite recognized even by the Korea Consumer Industry Evaluation Association! They operate on a same-day-baked, same-day-sold principle, and any bread not sold by day's end is reportedly donated to various welfare facilities. A bakery that's kind both in taste and in spirit.
