Gunja Station hair salon: medium brown gray coverage, Wedon Hair

Wedon Hair Gunja is a reservation-first hair salon on the 2nd floor near Exit 3 of Gunja Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. Because her hair was damaged from frequent dyeing, the writer chose a gentler gray coverage color in medium brown instead of an all-over dye, plus a trim of the damaged ends and a blow-dry. The gray around her part was neatly covered, her hair looked smoother, and the medium brown looked even brighter in natural light, which left her happy with Wedon Hair Gunja.

Haengdang Market Korean BBQ: day drinking with 3 friends, Pujutgan

Pujutgan Saenggogi-jeom (푸줏간생고기점) is a cauldron-lid Korean BBQ restaurant near Haengdang Market in Seongdong, Seoul, 314m from Wangsimni Station Exit 10. Three friends day-drinking at lunch ordered 4 servings of pork belly, then added 2 more servings of pork belly and 1 of gabrisal (pork shoulder cap) at ₩20,000 per 180g serving. Staff grilled the meat from start to finish, and sides like beef brisket doenjang stew, kimchi stew and naengmyeon (cold noodles) came with it. Pujutgan Saenggogi-jeom suits anyone who loves Korean BBQ but would rather not grill it themselves.

Girls' night pub at Konkuk Univ. with heart shrimp chive jeon: Dowon

Sinseon Sulzip Dowon Konkuk Main Branch (신선술집 도원) is a hanok-style Korean gastropub near Exit 2 of Konkuk Univ. Station in Gwangjin, Seoul, with group rooms from the 2nd floor up to a 4th-floor rooftop. On a late-night catch-up with old friends, the group had complimentary seaweed soup, a heart-shaped shrimp chive jeon (Korean savory pancake), stir-fried squid with somyeon noodles, homemade tofu with kimchi duruchigi (spicy stir-fry) and mango snow bingsu; the only letdown was that suyuk (boiled pork) dishes could not be ordered that late. Sinseon Sulzip Dowon is a solid pick for a group night near Konkuk Univ. that combines good drinking food, dessert and a calm atmosphere in one place.

Nowon sushi buffet: endless salmon sashimi and mala shrimp at Kuu Kuu

Kuu Kuu Nowon Branch (쿠우쿠우 노원점) is an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet on the 6th floor of 247 Nowon-ro in Nowon, Seoul. The writer went for a weekend lunch with a child, ate as much salmon sashimi and salmon sushi as they wanted, and also tried whole crab, mala shrimp, pumpkin porridge, slushies and bead ice cream; the weekend adult price is 35,900 won. Verdict: Kuu Kuu Nowon Branch is a good family dining spot where kids and adults can each pick what they like.

Songpa raw beef bar, autumn-night soju and ramyeon: Hampyeong Yukhoe

Chewy mungtigi and tender yukhoe in the autumn breeze make Hampyeong Yukhoe Bangi Main Branch a great after-work drinking spot.

Jamsil Station Korean restaurant: day-drinking sundae hot pot, Boseung

Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean rice soup) restaurant open every day of the year near Jamsil Station Exit 10 in Songpa, Seoul. Around 3 pm, two friends ordered the medium sundae (Korean blood sausage) and intestine hot pot for ₩32,000 and spicy pollock salad for ₩4,000 to go with daytime drinks; the portion was generous enough for three, and the broth was spicy yet mellow, almost like a rosé sauce. The medium sundae and intestine hot pot at Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch has plenty of food and flavor for two people sharing drinks.

Konkuk pizza pub after bowling, kimchi fried rice: Pizza E Michida

Pizza E Michida Konkuk University Branch is a wood-fired pizza and beer pub near Exit 1 of Konkuk University Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. After a holiday bowling match with friends, the writer arrived at the 4 p.m. opening for the 30,900-won Pi-Chi (pizza and chicken) set with half combination, half cheddar cheese pizza, plus truffle Toowoomba pasta, whole bacon cheese kimchi fried rice and 1,900-won frosty draft beer. Pizza E Michida serves generous portions at fair prices, which makes it a great spot for sharing with a group.

Seongsu Italian restaurant, chilled red wine and fried gnocchi: Sedici

Sedici is an Italian restaurant on the ground floor of Seongsu Arc Valley, near Seongsu Station Exit 2 in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. We booked a dinner table on Naver and paired fried sweet corn gnocchi (24,000 won), shrimp crumble pasta (23,000 won) and beef tartare with added brioche (19,000 won plus 3,000 won) with a chilled 45,000 won bottle of Las Guaritas red wine. Sedici serves distinctive dishes at fair prices with easy wine pairing, making it a solid Seongsu-dong dinner-date pick.

Chicken galbi restaurant in Cheonho with cheese steamed egg: Ondogye

Ondogye (온도계) is a charcoal-grilled chicken galbi (marinated grilled chicken) restaurant in Jjukkumi Alley, near Exit 6 of Cheonho Station in Gangdong, Seoul. Two friends sat in the Ondogye annex and ordered 2 portions of spicy chicken galbi and 1 portion of garlic salt chicken galbi, which the staff grilled for them. The scallion kimchi was refilled twice, and they added a second plate of the complimentary fried gizzards. Verdict: at Ondogye, order the mild and spicy flavors together, and don't skip the cheese-loaded steamed egg.

Autumn tomato-jang kalguksu at a Namyangju valley BBQ: 2002 Witch's

2002 Witch's Arpeggio is a valley Korean BBQ restaurant tucked into the mountains near Myojeoksa Temple in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi. At an outdoor table we shared cheese tomato-jang pork belly for two at 25,000 won per person, the new autumn tomato-jang kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) at 15,000 won, crispy mini potato pancakes, pollack roe scorched-rice fried rice from a cauldron, and homemade blueberry wine, with a staff member grilling the pork belly to the finish and adding a torched smoky flavor. 2002 Witch's Arpeggio is an easy recommendation for an autumn drive or a family dinner just outside Seoul.
