Cheonan crab restaurant: soy crab set plus pot rice, Huni Gejang
In short
Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a restaurant on Taejosan-gil in Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, that specializes in soy-marinated crab (ganjang gejang) and crab stew. After a tax office errand, the writer and Mom ordered the crab set at Huni Gejang and added pot rice (solbap) for 3,000 won. The Yeonpyeongdo crab wasn't salty, and the steamed egg and sides, including Korean-grown kimchi, were made with care. Mom asked to come back on the way out, making it a satisfying family meal.

After finishing an errand at the tax office with my mom, I was so hungry! Dealing with tax office paperwork always drains your energy, right? So we said, "Let's have a proper meal today!" and headed to Huni Gejang (훈이꽃게장) Cheonan Main Branch on Taejosan-gil in Cheonan.
What is Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch like?
If you search for Huni Gejang on Naver, "delivery" shows up in the related searches. It's the real deal, the kind of place people order from by delivery.

By the way, the building is quite big and neat from the outside. Parking is plentiful too.

Is the interior roomy enough for a family gathering?

The inside of Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a huge, wide space, perfect for a family gathering.

The window seats get great natural light, ideal for looking at the view while you eat, and the whole place felt airy and clean.
What did we order? The crab set plus pot rice

Mom and I ordered the crab set (gejang jeongsik) and added pot rice (solbap) for ₩3,000. You order on a tablet here, and when I saw the crab soup menu my eyes went wide. Still, just the two of us, so we went with the crab set. There were tons of add-on items too, and when I saw pot rice, I added it right away.
But this place is set up so that you can't help eating two bowls or more. Because all the side dishes are so good..

Several neat side dishes came out on the table too.

Where do the crabs come from?
There was an origin sign right on the wall, and it said the crab is domestic (Yeonpyeongdo). You all know how amazing Yeonpyeongdo crab is, right, everyone?

What comes in the crab set?
Once the crab set was fully laid out, with pot rice, soy marinated crab, seaweed soup and side dishes, the table was packed with a real feast.

Seaweed, radish kimchi (kkakdugi), bracken namul (seasoned greens), the crab itself, every single side came out neatly plated. Even with so many sides, nothing felt half-made.

You know that exciting feeling when you lift the lid of the pot rice? The rice came out bubbling and steamed just right, and with crab on top it was a total rice thief.

Is the soy marinated crab too salty?
The soy sauce at Huni Gejang isn't too salty, just right, and Mom loved it too. I took a close-up of the soy crab plate: it was packed with several half crabs, and wasabi came alongside.

Look at the soy crab on top of the rice: the dark brown claws look so tempting, topped with sesame seeds and red chili garnish, and mixing it into the rice was heaven.

That moment of scooping up a spoonful of pot rice with crab on top is the happiest moment at a crab restaurant, isn't it? The crab sauce soaked right into the rice and it was so good.

How were the egg custard and side dishes?
A steamed egg custard (gyeran-jjim) in an earthenware pot came out almost like a freebie, and it was so fluffy that eating it with the soy crab made my mouth happy.
The kimchi was domestic too, and with flying fish roe, seaweed and namul, I could finish a bowl of rice even without the soy crab, haha.

Look at this quality, you guys 😭 Spicy marinated crab and soy crab together on one table. The color contrast between the red spicy crab and the dark soy crab was a treat for the eyes.

It was meant to be mixed into the pot rice when it comes out later. Details like this already tell you what kind of place it is.

Can you have coffee after the meal?
Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch has a self-serve coffee machine, so we had coffee after eating too. I really liked that kind of thoughtfulness. The inside is so wide and open that it seems good for families or groups. The wood interior made the mood warm, and I felt good the whole meal.
Overall verdict on Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch
Honestly, even among famous crab places, not many beat expectations, but Huni Gejang truly did.. 💗💗 They use Yeonpyeongdo crab so the crab meat is different, every side dish is made with care, and the owner was so kind that I felt good the whole meal.
As we left, Mom said we should come again. This was a sponsored visit, not paid out of pocket, but sometimes a whole family falls for a place and becomes regulars after a sponsored visit, and I think that will happen here. If you want crab in Cheonan, I really recommend it, everyone in Cheonan, highly recommended!
