Gwanak group fitness classes with form coaching: Fist X

In short

Fist X Seoul National University Entrance is a group fitness center in Gwanak, Seoul, where I returned to exercise after about a month away. The 60-minute class combined weights and cardio with hands-on form feedback, though it was not as individually focused as one-on-one personal training.

What was it like getting back to exercise after a break?

I had let my exercise routine slip for about a month while preparing for my wedding. I walked and did a little exercise while traveling, but I wanted to move regularly again, so I visited Fist X Seoul National University Entrance (피스트엑스 서울대입구). The center is on B1 of Yeongin MC Building at 456 Bongcheon-ro, Gwanak-gu, Seoul.

I was excited to try a new kind of group fitness class, but since it had been a while, I was also worried about whether I could keep up with the movements.

What did they check during the first-visit consultation?

The coach explained the programs and asked what exercise I usually did and whether I had experience with group fitness.

As we talked, I found out that the head coach had personally tried the center I used to attend as well. They had compared various exercises and centers, which made me curious about how the classes here had been put together.

What were the structure and intensity of the 60-minute class like?

The class I experienced felt like a dynamic CrossFit-style workout with weights, cardio, and form coaching added in. Rather than simply copying the same movements as everyone else, I could move while thinking about how I was using my muscles.

With cardio included alongside movements using barbells and weights, it felt like enough exercise for 60 minutes. At first, I considered trying two classes in a row, but one was enough for me.

I worried that my fitness might have dropped a lot during the break, but I liked that it was not just exhausting; I could stay aware of which areas I was using. By the end, I felt as though I had used my whole body.

Can you choose a program based on your fitness goal?

I liked being able to choose between VOLUME and FAT BURN. I could choose according to my goal, such as days when I wanted to focus on cardio and overall exercise volume or days when I wanted to focus more on using my muscles.

My goal was to regain the fitness and exercise feel I had before taking a break. Since everyone has different goals, such as reducing body fat or building muscle, I appreciated being able to choose a program.

Can you receive form feedback in a group fitness class?

I wondered whether, with several people exercising at once, I would end up simply following the person in front of me. In the actual class, the coaches kept moving around and checking each member's form one by one.

Even someone like me, who was exercising again after a long time and was not familiar with the movements, could get immediate feedback on how to position their body. They checked that we were not overdoing it with incorrect form, so I thought it would be a good place to learn movements while exercising.

How did it differ from one-on-one personal training?

I came away with the impression that dynamic full-body movements, cardio volume, and coaching that checked my form were all included in one class.

Still, because it was a group class, it could not focus on just one person as closely as one-on-one personal training. Within that format, the coaches moved around, watched carefully, and adjusted things to suit each person's level. If you are deciding between working out alone at a gym and one-on-one personal training, it felt like an option worth considering.

Was it easy to settle into the class atmosphere as a first-timer?

I am a little shy around new people, so I worried that group fitness might feel awkward. In class, the coaches and members focused on their own workouts while naturally encouraging one another.

It felt less chaotic than like an atmosphere where everyone was giving each other energy. For someone like me, whose motivation can weaken when exercising alone, that encouragement was more helpful than I expected.

What could help you keep exercising beyond the regular classes?

I heard that they sometimes hold special classes, photo classes, and in-class events. I did not take part in them myself this time, but I thought those changes, added to the atmosphere of exercising together, could motivate people to keep attending.

The center also had a refrigerator where shakes were available for purchase. It looked convenient for grabbing something right after a workout when hungry.
