Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip is a dakgangjeong (sweet, crispy fried chicken) shop in the dakgangjeong alley of Sokcho Jungang Market, Gangwon, run together with Seomin Gapbu Ttogine Twigim. The writer bought a half-portion of regular-flavor dakgangjeong for ₩11,000 at 5 p.m. and ate it at 11 p.m. as a late-night snack with nurungji squid sundae (rice-stuffed squid with a crisped-rice crust), and the chicken was still not soggy, with a sweet but clean sauce. Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip suits Sokcho travelers who want squid sundae, potato pancake and dakgangjeong all in one stop.

Gwangalli seafood spot: pot-grilled king prawns at Gwangalli Badangjip

Gwangalli Badangjip (광안리바당집) is a seasonal seafood restaurant on the 2nd floor on Gwanganhaebyeon-ro in Suyeong, Busan, with a view of Gwangan Bridge. Instead of raw fish, two diners ordered daehagui (grilled king prawns), live prawns cooked right in a pot, and the butter-grilled prawn heads were the most memorable part. With a tidy dining room, a friendly owner and the Gwangan Bridge view, Gwangalli Badangjip is a good choice for a filling meal in Gwangalli.

Songjeong Beach stone jjamppong & tangsuyuk for two: Songjeong Dol

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong (송정돌짬뽕) is a Chinese restaurant near Songjeong Beach in Haeundae, Busan, that serves jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and jjajang (black bean noodles) on sizzling stone plates. On a rainy day, two diners ordered the whole squid stone jjamppong at spice level 2 (about as hot as Shin Ramyun) with crunchy tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) and handmade gyoza; the thick, rich broth, the scorched rice crust from the stone plate and the audibly crackling tangsuyuk stood out. Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is worth recommending when you crave a hot, spicy soup on a rainy day or want a family meal out with kids.

Chuncheon dakgalbi restaurant: big portions and makguksu at Hwagye

Goseong Korean BBQ late lunch, odor-free pork galbi: Yongchon Gogi-jip

On a Sokcho trip, the writer arrived a little after lunchtime and grilled hand-cut pork galbi to wrap with lettuce, garlic and ssamjang (dipping paste), praising the meat with no gamey smell, the marinade that isn't overpowering and the staff's careful attention to the grill. For a proper pork galbi meal on a Sokcho or Goseong trip, Yongchon Gogi-jip is recommended.

Marine City Chinese: kkanshao shrimp & night sea walk, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch (부엌간 차이니즈 마린시티점) is an ocean-view Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Adelis shopping arcade in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan. At Bueokgan Chinese the writer ordered ganjajang (dry-fried black bean noodles) with a poached egg, abalone shrimp fried rice and kkanshao shrimp (sweet chili shrimp); the rich abalone flavour of the fried rice and the shrimp, fried to order and crispy, stood out, with almost no greasy aftertaste. Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a good pick for a family or group meal by the sea, followed by a night walk along the water facing Gwangan Bridge.

Haeundae bakery café selling out by 1pm: pain au chocolat, Low & Sweet

Low & Sweet Bakery is a bakery café on Haeri-dan-gil near Haeundae Station Exit 4 in Busan, a bread-focused shop run separately from the Low & Sweet roastery. In a wood-and-white space with big windows and a back terrace garden, the writer had an iced americano with egg tarts, a croissant, pain au chocolat, a chocolate canelé and other baked treats, and reports that the bread is mostly sold out before 1pm. Low & Sweet Bakery is a Haeundae bakery where the fresh bread is as good as the coffee, so the earlier you go, the better.

Namdaemun kids' shop: website prices & short-cut size 13, Apple Smile

Apple Smile is a kids' clothing shop in Namdaemun Market, Jung-gu, Seoul, at unit 12 of the Bourdain Kids' Clothing arcade (부르뎅아동복), selling its own designs made in Korea. Near Hoehyeon Station Exit 6, Apple Smile charges the same prices as its official website, puts a price tag on every item, accepts Onnuri gift vouchers and had some fall items on sale. For a niece who usually wears size 11, the owner's tip led to size 13 in a short-cut design, and the stitching and fabric still impressed at home.

Yesan Market bone-in chicken stir-fry to reheat at your stay: Sijang

Sijang Dakbokkeum (시장닭볶음) is a Korean restaurant inside Yesan Permanent Market in Yesan, Chungnam, specializing in chicken stir-fry with shishito peppers. Around 1:30 pm on a weekday, the writer ordered the bone-in shishito pepper chicken stir-fry for 25,000 won at the kiosk, got a KakaoTalk alert about 8 minutes later and took it back to a lodging near Splas Risom in Deoksan to reheat in the microwave. The soy-based sauce soaked right into the chicken and the shishito peppers cut the richness, making Sijang Dakbokkeum's chicken stir-fry a great takeout meal for a Yesan trip.

Garak Market gopchang with cream sundae soup: Gwangju Seoul Gopchang

Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Garak Market branch is a gopchang (beef intestine) restaurant in Songpa, Seoul, about a 4-minute walk from Garak Market Station Exit 3, carrying on a 70-year, third-generation tradition that began in Gwangju. On an early evening visit, the writer ordered a plate of grilled gopchang (29,000 won) and cream sundae gukbap (Korean blood sausage soup with rice) and loved the combination of smoky gopchang served fully grilled and a creamy soup as rich as cream pasta. If you want gopchang and soju near Garak Market Station, Gwangju Seoul Gopchang is a solid choice.
