Cheonan crab restaurant for groups: roe-filled crab set at Huni Gejang

In short

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Taejosan-gil in Yuryang-dong, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, specializing in soy-marinated crab (ganjang gejang) and spicy marinated crab (yangnyeom gejang). The roe crab set for 2 brought roe-filled soy crab, spicy crab, soy-marinated shrimp, a puffy 'bomb' steamed egg and pot rice to one table, and the large parking lot and a hall that looks like it could seat close to 200 people stood out. Huni Gejang is a good fit for anyone craving rich, roe-packed crab or looking for a family meal or group gathering spot in Cheonan.

What is Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch like?

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch (훈이꽃게장 천안본점) is a Korean restaurant in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, specializing in gejang (marinated raw crab), where you can try both the soy-marinated and spicy versions in one meal. When I want a hearty meal in Cheonan, marinated crab is one of the first things that comes to mind. I was looking for a place with salty, deeply savory soy crab and sweet-spicy crab that wakes up your appetite, so I headed to Huni Gejang.

Is there enough parking and group seating at Huni Gejang?

The parking lot is huge and the restaurant is super spacious, so it's a great place to come with a big group!! It sits in the middle stretch of Yuryang-dong. Once you walk in, it's way bigger inside than it looks from the outside, with tons of tables. Honestly it looked like it could fit almost 200 people, so whatever the gathering, don't worry and bring the whole group!!

Exterior and interior atmosphere

The exterior is clean and looks roomy, which made a good first impression. The sign is big, so it's easy to spot even when you're just passing by, and the layout looks wide open from the front, so I thought it would work well for family meals or gatherings.

Inside, it was much bigger and more comfortable than I expected. The tables aren't crammed together, and the wood interior gives it a warm feel. Long ceiling lights make the space look tidy and stylish, and the floor was sparkling clean, which put me in a good mood before we even ate.

What comes with the roe crab set at Huni Gejang?

Huni Gejang has a regular crab set and a roe crab set (알배기정식), and we ordered the roe crab set for 2. It comes with seaweed soup, seasoned vegetables, steamed egg, flying fish roe and butter as side dishes, plus roe-filled soy crab, spicy marinated crab and soy-marinated shrimp (one per person).

The food was good, but what made me even happier was how big and clean the restaurant is. The tables are nicely spaced and the whole place feels comfortable, so I think it would be fine to bring your parents. If you love marinated crab, it's worth a visit when you're in Cheonan.

A full table of side dishes and seaweed soup

The roe crab set isn't just crab: side dishes, seaweed soup, seaweed snack and steamed egg all come too, so it was really generous. We sat down, ordered, and waited, and then the table filled up completely. The moment it was packed, I thought, "Okay, we're really going to eat well here."

The side dishes were neat and tidy too. Kimchi, seasoned vegetables, seaweed and seaweed soup all came out nicely, and each one went well with the crab. The seaweed snack is a must with gejang, great for wrapping rice and crab meat. The seaweed soup came out hot, which made the meal feel even more filling.

How does the soy-marinated crab at Huni Gejang taste?

The soy crab here isn't just salty; it has a deep savory flavor that's perfect with rice. The soy crab caught my eye first, with moist, full meat and the soy marinade soaked in well, so just looking at it made me crave rice. When I pressed the meat and tasted it, the soy flavor was rich but not overwhelming. Put rice on a piece of seaweed, add crab meat and a little soy sauce, and this combo needs no words.

The steamed egg was impressive too. The yellow "bomb" steamed egg puffed up over the earthenware pot looked so tempting, and it was super nutty, soft and warm, perfect as a side between bites of crab!! Since gejang is seasoned, the steamed egg softened the flavors in between. Whenever my mouth got too salty, this egg dialed things back to something mild. I finished the whole pot, it was that handy.

Here's a tip: mix the flying fish roe into rice in the soy crab shell, then wrap it in dry seaweed and eat. It's seriously delicious!!

How should you eat the spicy crab, shrimp and pot rice?

The spicy crab's seasoning was so good that later I scraped crab meat into the butter and spicy crab sauce and mixed it all with rice. You can order extra spicy crab and shrimp if you want, but the portions were plenty, so we didn't add any. But that soy-marinated shrimp was so good too, a real rice thief (밥도둑, a dish that makes you finish all your rice).

Scoop some rice out of the pot to eat with the crab, then pour hot water into the pot and eat it at the end as nurungji-style rice tea (숭늉, scorched rice soup) for dessert!

Is there a taste difference between regular crab and roe crab?

The roe crab here has a nuttier, richer flavor than the regular crab, and I definitely liked the roe version better. I'm so glad I ordered it: the meat was plump and the crab was packed with roe. There's a reason the pricier one tastes better. The moment I pressed it, roe and meat came tumbling out, and it was so, so good.

Two big spoonfuls of rice with the soy shrimp first, and the shrimp melts in your mouth. I chewed and it was gone. And of course you have to mix rice into the crab shell sauce, it's only natural. Only when you eat it this way can you say you've really had gejang. Looking at the photos while writing this, I want it again.

How spicy is the spicy crab?

The spicy crab looks hot, but when you actually eat it, the sweet-spicy level was just right. It's topped with plenty of red sauce, but the seasoning isn't just harshly strong; it goes well with the crab meat, so I kept reaching for more. If the soy crab is deep and nutty, the spicy crab is the one that wakes up your appetite. Alternating between the two, I never got tired of it and enjoyed it to the end.

Who is Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch good for?

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a place I'd recommend when you want a filling meal: soy crab and spicy crab together on one table, with steamed egg and side dishes that come out well too. If you're looking for a good crab restaurant in Cheonan, trying to decide on a family meal spot, or craving a rice-thief dish, it's worth a visit. It was a great Yuryang-dong restaurant to take your parents to!!
