Holiday sashimi restaurant in Suyeong, Busan: flounder-milchi platter

In short

Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap is an oyster soup and sashimi restaurant across from the Suyeong-dong post office in Suyeong-gu, Busan. On a public holiday early evening the small assorted sashimi platter cost 40,000 won with flounder and milchi (gray mullet), finished with maeuntang (spicy fish stew), and the free banchan alone filled the table with stir-fried fish cake, acorn jelly and silkworm pupae. The thinly sliced fish melted in the mouth and the stew sealed the deal, making Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap good enough value to return for gizzard shad sashimi.

Here's a piping-hot review from earlier today. Let me introduce a sashimi restaurant I found while out in Suyeong, Busan!

You're probably wondering why an oyster soup place is serving sashimi? I wondered the same, but after visiting, this turned out to be some of the best sashimi I've had recently — I'm planning to go back just for the gizzard shad sashimi haha.

Where is Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap, and where do you park?

Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap (신통영굴국밥) is located directly across from the Suyeong-dong post office. It's actually the same place as the Sintongyeong Anglerfish restaurant right next door.

  • Address: 24 Suyeong-ro 725beon-gil, Suyeong-gu, Busan (Suyeong-dong 304-2), South Korea
  • Hours: 11:30-24:00

For parking at this Suyeong sashimi restaurant, you can use the paid post office parking lot — the fee was ₩3,000 for the first 30 minutes, then ₩1,000 per additional 15 minutes.

Large fish tank placed outside the restaurant

There was a large fish tank outside, kept impressively clean, and you could check the menu with prices right from outside too.

Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap had all kinds of oyster (gul) dishes — oyster soup, raw oysters, oyster pancake, seasoned oysters, rock oysters — but apparently those are winter-only. In summer, cold raw fish soup (mulhoe) and sashimi rice bowls (hoedeopbap) were the popular picks.

What the restaurant is like on a holiday early evening

Every table had sauces and wet wipes ready, keeping things tidy. Inside there were about 10 tables, and it seemed like a popular spot for group gatherings. Even though I visited on a public holiday early evening, there were quite a lot of customers.

The free banchan spread

The banchan (side dishes) at Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap seem to rotate, but on the day I visited they included fish cake stir-fry, acorn jelly, mushroom stir-fry, seasoned kelp strips, sea squirt, silkworm pupae, sweet potato, and broccoli — I'd already eaten through half of it before the sashimi even arrived. Everything tasted good and was served clean and thoughtfully, which just made me look forward to the main dish even more haha.

The aged kimchi and lettuce wraps were fresh too, which I appreciated.

Small assorted sashimi platter, 40,000 won: flounder and milchi

The ₩40,000 small assorted sashimi platter

Even the small platter came with a generous amount, right? It was made up of flounder and milchi.

Assorted sashimi made of flounder and milchi

I started with my favorite part — the fin — and honestly, that chewy, nutty flavor is unbeatable...

Chewy flounder fin sashimi

I usually prefer thicker cuts of sashimi for the chew, but the sashimi here was sliced relatively thin — thin enough to be almost translucent. It practically melted away in my mouth, and that soft texture was delicious in its own right.

Sashimi dipped in soy sauce

Personally I like dipping sashimi in soy sauce or ssamjang (spicy dipping sauce), and today it hit the spot again. For the health-conscious side, I made sure to wrap some bites in lettuce too.

Finishing with maeuntang (spicy fish stew)

It was so good I demolished the platter in no time, then finished with the spicy fish stew (maeuntang). There was plenty of fish in it, which really came through in the broth — not too intense, just nicely balanced, and I liked that a lot.

The subtle scent of banga (Korean mint herb) made it even better — just watch out for fish bones haha. We each cleared a bowl of rice down to the last grain!

Worth it for a sashimi restaurant near Suyeong Paldo Market?

For ₩40,000 for the small assorted platter, I left full and satisfied at a great price 👍🏻👍🏻 Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap has such a huge menu that every table around me seemed to be enjoying something different — the gizzard shad set, grilled shrimp, assorted seafood platter, you name it. From a full meal to seafood drinking snacks, you could easily do your first and second round of drinks all in one place at Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap haha. If you're looking for a sashimi restaurant near Suyeong Paldo Market, I'd recommend this one 🤍
