Rainy-day Gangneung holiday house for 6 with kids: Yeongjin-gil 51

Yeongjin-gil 51 is a private holiday house near Yeongjin Beach in Yeonggok-myeon, Gangneung, with its own kitchen, bedroom and bathroom on each of the first two floors plus a third-floor terrace. The writer stayed at Yeongjin-gil 51 with friends and their children, six people in all, and rain throughout the trip ruled out the terrace and the fire pit, but the covered BBQ area (30,000 won), hinoki bath and spacious interior kept everyone comfortable. Yeongjin-gil 51 is a good Gangneung group stay for spending time indoors, even on a rainy day.

Suwon Station café, sweet potato cake & coconut coffee: Jeong Ji-young

Jeong Ji-young Coffee Roasters AK Plaza Suwon is a café on the 3rd floor of AK Plaza, the department store connected to Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. On a weekday visit the blogger ordered a coconut coffee and a sweet potato cake; both were delicious, seating was plentiful and the staff were friendly. Jeong Ji-young Coffee Roasters AK Plaza Suwon is a good stop for sweet coffee and dessert during a shopping break at Suwon Station.

On a date, the writer and their partner ordered a chuck flap steak, aglio e olio with extra noodles, the soup of the day and a cola for ₩56,000 in total, and the garlicky aglio e olio, the steak with no gamey smell and Brick Nojak's calm atmosphere were all satisfying. For an easy-parking, good-value Western restaurant for a date in Dongtan, Brick Nojak is worth recommending.

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Chinese restaurant specialising in cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) at Dongtan Namgwangjang in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a repeat visit, the writer ordered a large level 2 cockle jjamppong, cockle jjamppong rice with a small portion of noodles, and fried dumplings, and a partner who eats no seafood at all enjoyed the cockle jjamppong for its clean broth with no fishy taste. With sand-free cockles and a spicy broth, Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is the place to return to whenever a jjamppong craving hits.

At the kiosk the writer ordered a beef belly bibim poke (13,000 won) and a pepper chicken breast bibim poke (10,900 won); both arrived within 5 minutes, the portions were generous, and the slightly spicy Salering bibim sauce gave them a rich, savory flavor. Salering Gyodae Direct Store is worth recommending for a solo meal or a light diet lunch.

Gangnam café with my sibling: yangzhi ganlu & flan, Upper and Under

Upper and Under is a dessert café near the CGV at Gangnam Station in Seoul, also close to Sinnonhyeon Station, spread over three levels from basement 1 to the 2nd floor. My younger sibling and I ordered an iced Americano, an Einspänner, a yangzhi ganlu cake (mango and grapefruit dessert cake) and a crème brûlée flan. The Americano had no sourness, the Einspänner cream was light, and the yangzhi ganlu cake had clear mango and grapefruit flavors. Upper and Under has so many desserts that it is a Gangnam Station café I want to revisit to try the rest.

Step-free duck restaurant in Yongin before Everland: Seonbong

Seonbong Sandeomi Ori (선봉산더미오리) is a duck restaurant on Seongsan-ro in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, close to Everland. Before entering Everland, the writer ordered the signature Sandeomi spicy duck bulgogi for 2, a portion generous enough for two, served with buckwheat and Jerusalem artichoke tea and an unlimited self-serve bar of wrap vegetables. With a step-free entrance for strollers and wheelchairs, Seonbong Sandeomi Ori is a good family meal stop before or after Everland.

Gyewondang Ingye Branch is a handmade pork cutlet (katsu) and Korean set meal (bansang) restaurant in central Ingye-dong, Suwon. The writer and a partner visited at 3 PM, possible because Gyewondang has no break time, and ordered the spicy Gopdori Bansang, a handmade pork loin katsu switched to spicy sauce and egg fried rice, and buckwheat jijim jeonbyeong (rolled buckwheat crepes), with bottomless soda on the side. Verdict: Gyewondang Ingye Branch is a solid Ingye-dong pick for crispy, juicy katsu paired with a spicy gopdori set.

Family café near Gwangalli with strawberry cream latte: Café Buajang

Café Buajang is a dessert café in Millak-dong, Suyeong-gu, Busan, near Gwangalli Beach, filled with plants and sunlight from floor-to-ceiling windows. On a Busan trip with her mom and sister, the writer walked from Gwangalli Beach to Café Buajang and ordered an Americano, a maple cream latte, a strawberry cream latte and the owner-recommended banana tiramisu. The strawberry cream latte had a good balance of cream, milk and strawberry syrup, and the banana tiramisu wasn't too sweet. Café Buajang is a calm pick for families who want a break from busy Gwangalli.
