Duho-dong mulhoe restaurant with an unlimited self-bar, Pohang: Ppwang

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant in the Seolmeori mulhoe district by Yeongildae Beach in Buk-gu, Pohang. A couple came for a weekday lunch, ordered the regular flounder mulhoe for two, and went back again and again to the self-bar of unlimited tteokbokki, fritters and bean sprout squid soup. Eating the flounder mulhoe mixed first, then adding broth for noodles and finally stirring in rice turned out to be the proper way to enjoy Pohang mulhoe.

When you're in Pohang, mulhoe (raw fish cold soup) is a must, haha. One of my goals coming to Pohang was to properly try Pohang-style mulhoe. Do you know the "Pohang mulhoe uncle"...? I wanted to experience mulhoe just like he does, so I visited Ppwang Mulhoe, a well-known spot in Duho-dong!

Where is Ppwang Mulhoe and where do you park? 203-1 Haean-ro, parking out front

Ppwang Mulhoe is on the 1st floor of 203-1 Haean-ro, Buk-gu, Pohang, right in front of the Seolmeori mulhoe district by Yeongildae Beach. You can park right in front of the restaurant, and if there's no space, the public beach parking lot across the road is only 10–30 seconds away on foot, so there's no need to worry even if you drive.

The pink sign really caught my eye! Since parking is available right in front, anyone driving in can visit without any worries.

The interior is spacious too! Very group-friendly. They even have baby chairs matched in pink. Even on a weekday lunch, customers kept coming in, which made me sure — this really is a good place, haha.

Ppwang Mulhoe's self-bar: unlimited tteokbokki, fritters and squid soup

Ppwang Mulhoe's self-bar is fully unlimited, so you can take as much tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), fried food, and squid soup as you like. Just bring what you'll actually eat~~

There were tteokbokki and fried food kept warm in a heated container, haha. I went back for tteokbokki multiple times.

And even the squid soup is unlimited refill~~ Everyone loves squid soup, right, haha. You can enjoy hot squid soup as much as you want. This isn't a place that gives you looks for using the refill corner often — the owner actually asked if we liked squid soup and told us to enjoy as much as we wanted. That generosity made watching it feel good too.

Somyeon noodles served separately for Ppwang Mulhoe

Regular flounder mulhoe for two — add the somyeon noodles when you like

What we ordered at Ppwang Mulhoe was the regular flounder mulhoe for two. Unlike most mulhoe places where the noodles come already mixed in, here you can add somyeon (thin wheat noodles) whenever you want, in whatever amount you want.

I agonized between squid mulhoe and flounder mulhoe for the longest time... but I ended up ordering flounder, and I think that was the right call, haha.

How to eat mulhoe: mix it, add broth for noodles, finish with rice

I was standing there wondering how to eat it when I noticed the kiosk had the recommended method, so I followed it exactly. Eat mixed first → pour in broth and eat noodles → finish by stirring in rice!! Let's follow along.

Pohang-style flounder mulhoe served mixed
Mixing the flounder mulhoe

Pohang-style mulhoe seems to be characterized by a mixed form rather than coming swimming in broth from the start!

Step 1: eat the flounder mulhoe mixed

So much flounder and cucumber! My husband and I both love cucumber, so we really enjoyed this. The texture was great too, and it went perfectly with the generous pear on top. Tangy, crunchy, and soft flounder flesh — a match made in heaven! This is when I finally felt like I was properly eating Pohang mulhoe~ It was so refreshing and tangy, perfect for a hot day.

Step 2: pour in the broth and eat it as noodles

And now, noodle time, haha. Honestly, I'm team-noodles when it comes to mulhoe, so this was the part I was waiting for most.

Mulhoe noodles with broth poured in and stirred

Adding a generous amount of broth and swirling the noodles through made me think, yep, mulhoe really needs somyeon, haha.

Rice stirred into the mulhoe to finish the meal

Step 3: stir in the rice to finish

The meal wasn't over yet. When you order mulhoe, a bowl of rice comes automatically, and you can stir in as much as you like. Mixing in rice while a bit of noodles are still left and slurping it down made me feel like a true Pohang uncle! Refreshing, with crunchy pear and cucumber, plenty of flounder, noodles, and rice all in one bite! If you're in Pohang, you really have to try mulhoe.
