Yongsan tteokbokki restaurant with refillable crumbs: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a Korean snack restaurant in Yongsan, Seoul, serving both regular and table-cooked tteokbokki. After waiting about 30 minutes on a Saturday evening, I tried the medium-spicy Hyeonseonine Set, refillable frying crumbs, and sundae with offal. Verdict: worth the wait, and I want to return for the table-cooked tteokbokki.

Waiting and visitor information for Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch
Before watching the Seoul International Fireworks Festival near Yongsan Station, I went to fill my hungry stomach at this Yongsan tteokbokki spot that everyone says is seriously famous! I was wondering what to eat after the fireworks and found Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch nearby—well, a place with that kind of reputation really is different! If you’ve been looking for a good place in Yongridan-gil, take note haha.
Weekend evening wait

It was a weekend evening, and I was a little startled by the huge line outside as soon as I arrived. Haha. I waited over 30 minutes too, but once I settled in, the turnover was better than I expected. If you read webtoons, the time disappears in a flash.
Hyeonseonine serves two kinds: table-cooked tteokbokki, which you boil yourself at the table and therefore takes a little longer, and regular tteokbokki. There seemed to be more regular-tteokbokki customers, though, so seats opened up faster than I expected. It’s so popular that the place fills up completely, with a staff member assigned just to call out waiting numbers.
A spacious, lively interior and how to order

Once inside, the fairly spacious dining room was full of customers. It was bustling and lively, with that classic Korean snack-shop atmosphere. Haha. The layout has plenty of seating even for groups, and it was generally run very comfortably.

You can wait through Catchtable. I waited about 30 minutes on a Saturday evening.

You order at the kiosk. There are lots of choices, but there are set menus too, so I recommend a set if choosing feels difficult! I ordered the Hyeonseonine Set myself.

There’s an indoor restroom too, which was convenient.

Self-serve frying crumbs and slushies
There’s a self-serve bar, and they have frying crumbs there, you know? You absolutely have to get some! I love the frying crumbs at Korean snack shops, so I was so happy Hyeonseonine had them...! And since they’re self-serve, I went back for them twice. Sob.

There’s soy sauce and salt for sundae and fried snacks, too.

There’s also a review event and tips for the table-cooked tteokbokki. Hahaha. I’m going to try the table-cooked tteokbokki next time too...! Hahaha.

I was surprised they had slushies too. Haha. They seem perfect as dessert after tteokbokki, but I had to leave afterward, so I passed... sob. I used to drink grape-flavored slushies all the time as a kid...
Trying the medium-spicy Hyeonseonine Set

What I ordered was the Hyeonseonine Set. It comes with tteokbokki, assorted fried snacks, mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), and sundae (Korean blood sausage), so it was perfect—no need to pick and choose a bunch of things.
At Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, you can choose your spice level for regular tteokbokki: mild, medium, or spicy. Mild is a sweet, nostalgic tteokbokki flavor; medium falls somewhere between Shin Ramyun and Buldak 볶음면; and spicy is very hot. Haha.
I’m someone who can’t even eat Buldak, but I thought mild would be too mild, so I ordered medium. At first I thought, “Huh? This isn’t spicy?” but the finish really kicked in, and I got why it was called medium. Haha. I refilled the frying crumbs from the self-serve bar twice!

The fried snacks were crispy, and the squid inside was pleasantly chewy.

The fish-cake broth was refreshing, and the gimbap was especially delicious: it was generously brushed with sesame oil and packed with fillings! I also love dipping gimbap in tteokbokki sauce, so I diligently dipped away. Haha. I liked that the sundae came mixed with offal. These days, when you order sundae, you often get only plain glutinous-rice sundae, but Hyeonseonine, true to its reputation as a great Yongsan spot, serves it with offal mixed in..! You can choose sundae only or sundae with offal before ordering!
Kind service at Hyeonseonine, even when busy
Even though the restaurant was busy, the staff were truly kind, so I could enjoy my meal in a good mood. When the wait gets long, you can start feeling self-conscious, but because I had waited over 30 minutes, they even gave me a drink, which was so nice. Sob. I could feel that they cared about every single customer despite being busy, and I think that made the food taste even better.

If you’re looking for a Yongridan-gil spot that has taste, portion size, price, and kindness all covered, I strongly recommend Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch! I’m coming back next time to try the table-cooked tteokbokki. Haha.
