Izakaya near Deokgye Station, Yangju: 13-kind aged sashimi at Dungchi
In short
Dungchi (둥치) is a one-person izakaya near Deokgye Station in Yangju, Gyeonggi, serving aged sashimi, charcoal-grilled dishes and nabe (Japanese hot pot). On a weekend evening the writer ordered Dungchi's 13-kind assorted sashimi platter and seseri yaki (grilled chicken neck) with draft beer and a non-alcoholic lemon sour, and was especially pleased by the nutty, savory depth of the aged fish. Food at Dungchi comes out slowly and it gets busy enough to need a reservation, but for aged sashimi near Deokgye Station it is worth going back.

I was looking for an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) near Deokgye Station and ended up at Dungchi (둥치) because of the good reviews! Lots of people said the aged sashimi was great, but I was curious about the kaisendon (sashimi rice bowl) haha. I went for the kaisendon and, in the end, this is a review of the aged sashimi I ate instead. Here we go.

Should you book Dungchi for a weekend evening?
I recommend calling ahead for a weekend evening! As the reviews say, it's a Deokgye favorite and lots of locals come. I went on a weekend evening and it was so popular that one walk-in guest couldn't eat and had to leave 😢
Inside Dungchi: atmosphere, seating and drinking solo

Inside there are bar seats and regular tables, so it works for drinking alone or coming with friends. There were more seats than I expected, and it had a really cozy izakaya feel haha.
One thing: Dungchi is run by one person, so the food comes out fairly slowly. Come when you're not in a rush! If you're starving, that's rough 😂 The owner does tell you roughly how long it will take.
Dungchi menu: lunch, dinner and drinks

Dungchi has a lunch menu and a wide dinner menu: futomaki (thick sushi rolls), sashimi, charcoal-grilled dishes, tempura-style fried dishes, hot pots (nabe), udon, steamed dishes with alcohol, rice cooked in an iron pot and more haha.
The drinks list is wide too: draft beer, bottled beer, soju, highballs, soft drinks, non-alcoholic drinks, distilled spirits, sake, sours, wine and more!
What I ordered: assorted sashimi, seseri yaki, draft beer and non-alcoholic lemon sour

- Assorted sashimi
- Seseri yaki (grilled chicken neck)
- Draft beer
- Suntory lemon sour (non-alcoholic)

How were the Suntory non-alcoholic lemon sour and the draft beer?
The drinks came out first. I had the Suntory non-alcoholic lemon sour, but it tasted closer to lemon juice, so it wasn't my thing 😢 I guess I'm a cola person,, The draft beer was cold and good!

Dungchi's assorted sashimi: how did the 13 kinds of aged fish taste?
Dungchi's assorted sashimi came with 13 kinds of fish, and the portion was bigger than I expected. After a short wait, here it came! Doesn't it look gorgeous?!

The aged fish at Dungchi was definitely nutty and rich. The white fish was especially my style, and every single piece had a great savory depth, so I was really satisfied. The aged sashimi I'd had elsewhere recently was just so-so, so it felt great to eat something good for the first time in a while haha.
I found a great izakaya near Deokgye Station^^ The abalone was tender too, and even better eaten with the sea urchin.

Dungchi's seseri yaki (grilled chicken neck): flavor and spice level
The seseri yaki was delicious too. I liked the soft, tender texture that chicken neck has, and the seasoning wasn't too salty, just right. The spice level was a pleasant mild heat. Maybe because it's chicken neck, there were no crunchy cartilage bits to chew through, which I loved. So tender~
Is Dungchi near Deokgye Station worth going back to?
Both the aged sashimi and the seseri yaki at Dungchi were great!! I got curious about the other dishes too 😊 This is a Deokgye Station favorite I'd happily come back to and pay for myself haha. The atmosphere is nice and the food is delicious, so I want to visit again 😊
