Hapjeong café with Dirty & Custard chimney bread: Chimney Mansion

We visited Chimney Mansion (침니맨션), a café famous as a chimney bread hotspot near Hongik Univ. Station and Hapjeong Station in Mapo.

Where is Chimney Mansion, and what are its hours?

Chimney Mansion is at 14 Jandari-ro 6-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, 494 m from Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station. It's open Mon–Fri 11:00–20:00 and Sat–Sun 10:00–21:00.

We had never tried "chimney bread" (굴뚝빵, a hollow spiral pastry), so curiosity brought us to Chimney Mansion.

The exterior is brick and has a European feel, which looked really cool to us. The ice cream seems to be famous too.

Chimney bread varieties and the prices of what we ordered

Chimney Mansion has a huge range: butter cookies, butter bars, chimney bread, ice cream and more, and there seem to be about 30 kinds of chimney bread alone. Breads of all kinds greeted us as we walked in, which made choosing even harder.

The coffee list is varied too, so picking was fun. Here is what we ordered.

Chimney Mansion's atmosphere and restrooms

They seem to sell everything from ice cream to beer. After ordering we looked around, and there is so much English written inside that it really feels like being in Europe.

The restrooms are behind the sofas at the back of the 1st floor. They're separated by gender so they felt comfortable to use, and the inside was clean, which we liked.

How is the seating at Chimney Mansion divided?

Chimney Mansion has two floors. The 1st floor has group seats, sofa seats and tables, while the 2nd floor has sofa seats, a large table and even outdoor seating, so there are plenty of choices of where to sit.

We sat at the group seats on the 1st floor. We came on a weekday afternoon, so taking a group table was no problem.

What does the pepper-topped Chimney Coffee Einspänner taste like?

The Chimney Coffee (Einspänner, coffee topped with cream), Chimney Mansion's signature, seemed to have pepper sprinkled over the cream, and it had a slight kick as I drank it, which was really unusual. I personally love Einspänners, so I was curious about this one.

The iced Americano tasted like a classic, which was nice. It came with plenty of ice, so it stayed cold for quite a while and was refreshing to gulp down.

Instead of a fork and knife, the chimney bread came with scissors. Given how chimney bread is shaped, scissors seemed easier for cutting. It shows the owner's good sense.

More places selling chimney bread keep popping up lately, and Chimney Mansion had so many kinds that it was hard to choose. So we tried one each: the Custard Chimney and the Dirty Chimney.

We snipped them into bite-sized pieces like this. The Custard Chimney was packed with cream inside and looked so tempting. The Dirty Chimney was covered in cocoa powder on top, and the sweet-bitter taste was so good.

The pepper-and-cream combination on the Einspänner was stranger and more addictive than I imagined. Maybe that's why I kept sipping. The cream portion is generous too, so you keep getting sweet and bitter together, and I almost ordered a second cup.

Is Chimney Mansion good for conversation and laptop work?

The café isn't noisy, the sound doesn't carry much, and the tables are spaced widely apart, so it was good for talking and seems good for laptop work or studying too. I saw the owner cleaning the café himself from time to time, and seeing how much care goes into cleanliness, I felt it's no wonder the place does well.

The coffee is good and there's a huge variety of today's trendy chimney bread, so I recommend it to anyone looking for a café near Hongdae or Hapjeong!
