Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch is a Japanese restaurant serving ramen, tonkatsu and rice bowls on the 2nd floor of a building near Keimyung University's east gate in Dalseo, Daegu. Over a meal with a friend, the writer ordered shrimp tempura tonkotsu ramen, cheese tonkatsu and lemonade, with buta-don (pork rice bowl) and 2 extra pieces of cheese tonkatsu as the 2-person set sides, and the rich but clean broth and the generous cheese in the tonkatsu stood out. Verdict: Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch is a solid pick for a filling meal near Keimyung University.

Andong group restaurant: jjimdak noodles and mackerel set at Gilpung

Gilpung (길풍) is a Korean restaurant in Pungsan-eup, Andong, on the road into Hahoe Village, and it is spacious enough for tour bus groups. Before visiting Hahoe Village on a family trip, the writer's family ordered jjimdak (Andong braised chicken) and a salted mackerel set for lunch, and the sauce-soaked glass noodles and thick salted mackerel made a bowl of rice disappear fast. For families or groups who want Andong's signature dishes on one table before or after Hahoe Village, Gilpung is a good fit.

Daereungwon date café in Gyeongju: Bonghwang Coffee, Bonghwangdang

Cafe Bonghwangdang (카페 봉황당) is a view café near the entrance to Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, where floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the Daereungwon royal tombs. On a Gyeongju couples trip, the writer and her boyfriend stopped at Cafe Bonghwangdang after touring Daereungwon, tried the signature Bonghwang Coffee and the milk tea parfait, and took photos by the windows and the vintage props. Cafe Bonghwangdang is a good date café for a mid-trip break with the Daereungwon scenery.

Gyeongju Korean restaurant, spicy ribs with cream makgeolli: Hwangnam

Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant (황남두꺼비식당) is a hanok-style Korean restaurant tucked inside Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. On a lunch break from walking Hwangnidan-gil, the writer ordered spicy braised back ribs as the main, with yukhoe mulhoe (cold raw-beef soup), buckwheat jeon (savory pancake) and cream makgeolli (creamy rice wine), and the sweet-spicy ribs came off the bone easily. Verdict: Hwangnam Dukkebi's spicy braised ribs with a glass of cream makgeolli capture the Gyeongju trip mood perfectly.

Dongseong-ro, Daegu bar with 1+1 beef tartare: Room Pojangmacha

Room Pojangmacha is a Korean pub with private-room seating on Dongseong-ro 4-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. The writer and a friend ordered yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and gyeran-jjim (steamed egg) through a 1+1 event, then added mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles in chilled broth) and an Earl Grey highball while chatting comfortably in a private room. The yukhoe and steamed egg 1+1 deal at Room Pojangmacha was satisfying value, and the cold naengmyeon was the perfect way to finish.

Jinju anglerfish restaurant: dinner with a friend at Yangpohang

Yangpohang Jinju Pyeonggeo Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in anglerfish (agu) dishes on Saedeulmal-ro in Pyeonggeo-dong, Jinju. For a dinner with a friend, the small fire-grilled anglerfish bulgogi was the order, and a small pot of agu-tang (anglerfish soup) came out first as a standard starter. Budget weekday hanok stay in Jeonju: Haedanghwa room, Haetsalgadeuk

Haetsalgadeuk (햇살가득) is a hanok guesthouse on Hyanggyo-gil in Jeonju Hanok Village, Jeonju. The writer stayed in the Haedanghwa room, which had separate single bedding on a heated ondol floor, a private bathroom inside the room, a water purifier and a microwave, and the writer took photos in hanbok in the Haetsalgadeuk courtyard. Bookable from the 50,000 won range on weekdays, the Haedanghwa room at Haetsalgadeuk suits Jeonju travelers who want location, hanok character and value together.

Jeonju Gyeonggijeon-gil crab restaurant: spicy shrimp set, Hanjamae

The writer ordered 1 mixed soy set (soy-marinated crab, soy-marinated shrimp, abalone and salmon) and 1 spicy marinated shrimp set, ate them with egg rice and crispy seaweed, and was pleased with the hygiene gloves, aprons and the friendly owner. Hanjamae is a good meal stop on a Hanok Village trip when some of the group prefer soy-marinated seafood and others prefer spicy.

Gangdong wood-fired jokbal during a diet, bones and all: Iseon Hwaduk

Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam Myeongil Branch is a wood-fired jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam (boiled pork wraps) restaurant in Myeongil-dong, Gangdong, Seoul. Picking jokbal because she was on a diet, the writer and a companion shared wood-fired jokbal with makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) and rice balls, plus a Gorgonzola pizza from the review event and the complimentary soft tofu stew. The jokbal was crispy outside and tender inside. The portion was big, but the writer gnawed even the bones clean and wants to come back to this Gangdong jokbal spot.
