Dolsoe Ssambap (돌쇠쌈밥) is a Korean restaurant on Misagangbyeonhangang-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi, that specializes in ssambap sets (rice and grilled or stir-fried meat eaten in leafy wraps). After an outing in Hanam Misa, the writer ordered beef bulgogi ssambap for 2 and tried 12 kinds of wrap greens, 12 side dishes, and both seafood ssamjang and mackerel ssamjang (wrap dipping paste); the greens and side dishes are unlimited refills, so the meal was generous without feeling costly. Dolsoe Ssambap suits family meals or a lunch stop on an outing when you want a clean-tasting, filling Korean spread.

On a weekday visit at opening time with a child, the writer had the From Italy lunch set with homemade bread, carrot cream soup and salad, a stone-pot latte pasta in a spicy cream sauce, and a half-and-half blueberry and gorgonzola pizza. Thanks to its antique European interior and unusual menu, From Italy is a restaurant near Gwangneung Arboretum the writer wants to revisit with their parents.

Yeoju family Korean meal by Empress Myeongseong's home: Nadeulmok

Nadeulmok Yeoju Ssalbap (나들목 여주쌀밥) is a Korean set-meal restaurant on Sejong-ro in Yeoju, Gyeonggi, that serves Yeoju rice cooked in stone pots, about 5 minutes by car from Yeoju Premium Outlets and 2 minutes from Empress Myeongseong's birthplace. After shopping at the outlets, the writer had tangpyeongchae (mung bean jelly salad) and japchae (glass noodles) starters, a full spread with doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), and a bulgogi set for 2 big enough for 3, served with stone-pot rice and nurungji (scorched rice). With nutty rice and mild side dishes, Nadeulmok Yeoju Ssalbap is a Yeoju family restaurant the writer would gladly return to with parents and kids.

Pork jowl gukbap near Cheonho Station Exit 3, house kkakdugi: Boseung

Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (rice soup) restaurant about a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Cheonho Station in Gangdong, Seoul. On a chilly late-October visit, the writer recommended the pork jowl suyuk gukbap with chewy, tender boiled pork jowl, and noted that the dadaegi (spicy seasoning paste) and perilla seeds can be left out or added, that the kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) are made in-house, and that a weekday lunch with a stroller was no trouble. At ₩11,000 to ₩13,000 a bowl, Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a solid pick for a filling lunch or dinner near Cheonho Station.

Nursing-room café at Guui Station with a 5-month-old: Center Coffee

Korean BBQ in Namyangju with gochujang-free tomato sauce: 2002 Witch's

2002 Witch's Arpeggio is a Korean BBQ restaurant on a mountain slope in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi, right in front of a creek, and it welcomes both pets and children. At 2002 Witch's Arpeggio we ate 48-hour aged pork belly brushed with a gochujang-free tomato sauce made from tomato, pineapple, onion and celery, plus gamjajeon (potato pancake) that is crisp outside and chewy inside and myeongnan (pollock roe) fried rice, then explored the garden and the café next door. For a family outing that favors natural ingredient flavors over heavy seasoning, 2002 Witch's Arpeggio is a Namyangju BBQ spot worth remembering.

The writer visited Waltz and Dr. Mahn on a day that was sunny in the morning and pouring with rain in the afternoon, took in the Bukhangang River through the floor-to-ceiling windows, chose a mango delight and Opera cake instead of coffee because of the pregnancy, and happened to run into a couple from Transit Love 4. With river views that change with the weather and non-coffee desserts, Waltz and Dr. Mahn is a solid Bukhangang River date spot even for people who can't drink coffee.

The writer visited around 2 p.m. on a weekday with a baby in a stroller and checked the wide seat spacing, high chairs, free underground parking (2 hours 30 minutes) and the walking route along Changgokcheon stream; the full terrace had a free table about an hour later. Cafe The Venezia is a good baby-friendly café in Wirye where the stroller fits beside the table and brunch pairs with a walk for a half-day outing.

Wirye florist bouquet for parents in their 70s: Kkocheuldamda Lime
