Gyukatsu restaurant by Seoul Station, sharing a steki set: Furato
In short
Furato Shokudo Seoul Square Direct Store is a Japanese gyukatsu (beef cutlet) restaurant on basement level 1 of Seoul Square, right in front of Seoul Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Two friends travelling from northern and southern Gyeonggi met halfway at Seoul Station and shared gyukatsu and the steki (steak) set, plus a small draft beer and an Isigny butter add-on, grilling the beef on the brazier set into each table. Both dishes use sirloin, so the steak was tender enough to barely need chewing and the gyukatsu coating stayed crisp — no need to queue for it in Japan.

Why Seoul Station is the easy midpoint for friends from north and south Gyeonggi

The perfect spot for a friend living in northern Gyeonggi and me living in southern Gyeonggi to meet up!
That spot was Seoul Station haha. My friend took the GTX, I took a bus that goes straight there, and it turned out we both took about the same amount of time.
First things first, we were hungry, so we ate. Gyukatsu, which I first tried in Fukuoka, was today's lunch! I remembered lining up forever at that famous place there... but today we went to Furato Shokudo on B1 of Seoul Square, right in front of Seoul Station. First time at Seoul Square for this small-town girl haha. There was a bit of a wait since it was lunchtime.

Inside Furato Shokudo Seoul Square, one floor below the station square
It was so crowded I couldn't get many shots of the interior. But the decor felt like it transported you to Japan.
What was funny was how much Japanese I heard from the tables around us haha. A Korean gyukatsu restaurant that Japanese people come to eat at too... pretty interesting haha.

FYI, they're also running a promotion where paying with Naver Pay gets you ₩5,000 back in points!

Ordering the gyukatsu and steki set: a brazier at every table
Besides gyukatsu, there were all kinds of other menu items. But today's mission was gyukatsu, so we ordered one gyukatsu and one steki jeongsik (steak set) to share.

Each table has its own brazier. It's exactly the same kind I saw at gyukatsu restaurants in Japan??? Made me feel like I was traveling.
Ordering is easy via QR code! No need to pay upfront.

Gyukatsu absolutely calls for a draft beer, so I ordered a small one. When I traveled Japan I drank namabiru with every single meal... a traveler's privilege, maybe? haha. I took a photo of my friend drinking the beer and her face looked so satisfied haha. Can't post it for privacy reasons, but it was hilarious haha.
The sirloin steki set, eaten with salt and wasabi

The steki jeongsik came out first. The beef is only lightly seared on the outside and served rare. The sauces were salt, chili sauce, and that black sauce (kind of reminiscent of yakiniku sauce). Started off by lining the plate with cabbage first!

The marbling was incredible. Our server told us it's the tenderloin cut.

We started with the steki on the brazier. The heat was stronger than expected, so the pink faded fast. You could already feel how tender the meat was just from the chopsticks haha.

The first bite I dipped in just salt, then after that I added wasabi and dipped it in the black sauce. Best combo! The meat was so tender ㅠㅠ practically nothing to chew ㅠㅠ Even better on top of rice.

How good is the gyukatsu at Furato Shokudo?
My friend's gyukatsu order. Since there's only one brazier, we planned to share it anyway haha. Everything else matches the steki jeongsik, except the meat comes breaded and fried. Apparently the gyukatsu is also made with tenderloin.

It was thicker than the steki, so it wasn't quite as tender, but the bite had a better texture for it. The coating was crispy and the meat was tender! No need to queue up for this in Japan, right???

Adding Isigny butter to the grill
Isigny butter was on the menu so I gave it a try.

Melting the butter and grilling with it! The butter really did bring out the flavor and completely triggered my appetite haha.
No stopping now ㅠㅠ just kept piling it on ㅠㅠ If gyukatsu has a downside, it's that you end up eating way too fast. If you overcook it, it loses that tender texture, so you keep grilling it just barely done and eating it right away haha.

Eating piece by piece happily, and before you know it, it's all gone ㅠㅠ Had such a great time catching up with a beer with my friend after a long while!
What kind of restaurant is Furato Shokudo?
- A restaurant where you can try Japanese-style gyukatsu
- A restaurant where you grill it yourself on a personal brazier, so you get it exactly how you like it
- A restaurant Lee Young-ji gave a shoutout to
- A restaurant near Seoul Station, convenient to reach from anywhere in Seoul or Gyeonggi
- A restaurant the Corteiz members reportedly went to every weekend during their trainee days
That's the end of today's Seoul outing review!
