Daecheon Port fish shop: chal-flounder for two at home, Nokdo Susan

In short

Nokdo Susan (녹도수산) is a second-generation live fish and seafood shop in the Daecheon Port fish market in Boryeong, Chungnam. On the owner's recommendation, the blogger took home one grayish chal-flounder (chal-gwangeo, a chewier type of flounder) for 50,000 won and one cuttlefish for 20,000 won, packed on ice, and shared them with one other person. The chal-flounder got chewier as it aged, and it was the first time flounder ever tasted good to the blogger. For chewy sashimi and careful packing, Nokdo Susan's chal-flounder is worth choosing.

Nokdo Susan in Daecheonhang Fish Market: location and hours

Nokdo Susan (녹도수산) is a seafood shop inside Daecheonhang Fish Market in Boryeong, Chungnam. I'd been craving sashimi since last week, so I went, packed up chal-flounder and cuttlefish, and ate them at home.

What seafood does Nokdo Susan sell at Daecheonhang Fish Market?

Nokdo Susan had turban shells, scallops, cuttlefish, flounder, spoon worms, sea squirts and even king crab. I went because the shop is known for packing sashimi well, and being a fish market, the freshness and variety were clearly there. On weekdays they also steam seafood for you, from ₩10,000 per steamer.

They say Nokdo Susan has carried on a 40-year tradition into its second generation. The owner's parents ran a sashimi restaurant for a long time, so he picked up the trimming skills and touch naturally, then took over the family trade and started a seafood center, continuing in seafood with his parents' know-how.

How is chal-flounder different from regular flounder? The owner's recommendation

What the owner recommended was chal-flounder (chalgwangeo, ₩50,000 per fish). As of early July, when I went, he also recommended striped beakfish and the flounder that so many people ask for!

Flounder came in three colors, so I asked. The two I already knew are just slightly different in color because each fish farm feeds them differently, and the grayish one I picked is chal-flounder. I figured a fish named for chewiness must be really chewy, so I went for it.

Chal-flounder = glutinous rice 🐟, regular flounder = regular rice. The chewy texture is different, they say.

The owner's explanation was really fun too. When we said it was for two people at home, he scooped up one chal-flounder and one cuttlefish right away and weighed them.

Nokdo Susan's live fish are all domestic

All the live fish and seafood at Nokdo Susan are labeled as domestic (Korean) origin. 🐟 The clear origin labels made me trust the place more! These days lots of people check origin first when buying food 👀 Everything is domestic!! So I could browse with peace of mind.

📌 Flounder, rockfish, finless flounder, sea bass, red sea bream, black sea bream, and more! If you're looking for fresh domestic seafood, I think it's worth a stop! 😊

Sashimi takeout packaging and paying with Boryeong Sarang gift certificates

Nokdo Susan packed the ice very carefully. They also included the basic seasonings and thoughtfully tucked in wooden chopsticks.

Boryeong Sarang gift certificates work here too, so if you can, I recommend topping one up and using it! (As of July 2026, top-ups get a 12% discount.)

How much are Nokdo Susan's dried fish gift sets?

Nokdo Susan's dried fish gift sets run from ₩40,000 to ₩130,000. 🎁 A decent choice if you're stuck on holiday gifts! The contents were far more generous than I expected 👀 The wide price range makes it easy to pick one for your budget!

🐟 They contain only fish people eat often, like croaker, flatfish, golden croaker and rockfish, so they seem safe as a gift for parents or relatives. 📦 The gift box is neat, so I think the recipient would feel it's upscale, and the vacuum packing looks easy to store.

✨ Personally, the ₩60,000 and ₩110,000 sets looked like the best combinations. Good value, and just right for gifting! If you haven't picked a holiday gift yet, take a look at these practical dried fish sets 😊

How many hours does the ice box packing hold up?

They say Nokdo Susan's ice box packing easily lasts 3 to 4 hours or more. 🧊 Thanks to the ice, the sashimi didn't go soft at all and stayed fresh, and the longer I left it, the more it aged and got chewier, so the texture was fantastic.

Eating the chal-flounder and cuttlefish at home

The chal-flounder from Nokdo Susan had a better texture than the cuttlefish I bought with it. Since I was eating at home, I quickly set out perilla leaves, garlic and chili peppers, and used fresh wasabi we already had.

I usually prefer crunchy sashimi like filefish over regular flounder, but this was the first time I thought flounder was delicious! Cuttlefish < chal-flounder: the flounder's texture was better.

Home table with chal-flounder sashimi and non-alcoholic beer

I'm not drinking right now, so I had it with a non-alcoholic Suntory ale ✌🏻 And to finish, of course, my beloved Ottogi Jin Ramen with green onions 💛 Another week done well 👏🏻👏🏻
