Moran Korean BBQ with two salts and melon jeotgal: Mat Chandeul

In short

Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Moran Branch is an aged pork grill house on Dunchon-daero near Moran Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. On a rainy Liberation Day holiday, the writer ate out instead of cooking and ordered the A Set with samgyeopsal (pork belly), served with two salts, Himalayan and Andes, plus meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) and grilled baek-kimchi (white kimchi). Staff grill the meat over charcoal at the table, and cauldron rice and a doenjang stew with beef brisket round out a filling family meal.

Hey everyone~!! With the Liberation Day holiday here haha, we've been diligently recovering at home! It's hot... it's rainy and humid!! I was going to cook something at home but wasn't in the mood haha, thought about delivery too... but in the end we decided to eat out!!

There are tons of menu options, but eating out really does make you crave meat the most. I thought about it, deciding between grilled dishes I could easily make at home, and settled on the safe choice — pork belly!! But that doesn't mean just any place would do~ Looking for a good Moran samgyeopsal (pork belly) spot near home, I headed to Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui haha.

Ta-da! This is where we arrived — Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Moran Branch :) You can feel that famous-restaurant energy just from the outside!

It's also close to Moran Station, so the access is great! Once you step inside, the space is spacious enough for a relaxed meal haha.

The tables are spaced well apart and the place is clean and comfortable, so it seems like a lot of families come here to eat :)

And there's an aging chamber tucked in the corner of the restaurant!! The fact that aging is Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui's strong point ~!! Plain fresh pork belly is delicious too, but I can't forget the soft, flavor-packed taste of properly aged pork haha.

Seeing all the celebrity signatures on the wall! Time itself vouches for this being a legit Moran samgyeopsal spot 🐷

What comes with the A Set pork belly, and the lunch special

The main draw at Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Moran Branch is the aged pork! We went with the A Set among the good-value meat sets~ The set lets you choose between pork belly and pork neck, and of course we chose pork belly 🔥

Ah! Also, there's a lunch special menu you can order until 3pm, excluding weekends and holidays, and there's even a meat set meal, so it'd be great to come here when you want good-value meat for lunch haha.

Side dishes, including mukbap that hits the spot in summer

Once you finish ordering, they lay out a generous spread of side dishes! From wrap greens to baek-kimchi, various pickled vegetables, and shredded scallion — the vegetables especially were super fresh.

And the mukbap (acorn jelly salad), so refreshing and perfect for summer, really got our appetites going haha.

Aged pork belly grilled over charcoal by the staff

The pork belly arrives ~!! The color is looking pretty amazing, isn't it! Haha.

They also give you rice cake and potatoes to grill along with it! And the thickness of the meat instantly won me over haha.

They put the meat on a grill with charcoal underneath! And since the staff grills it for you~ tongs and scissors down! Sizzling away, cut into just the right size haha.

Wow... the visuals are seriously insane... my mouth is watering.

Maybe it's because it's properly aged, but doesn't the meat just glisten with shine?

Glossy, well-aged pork belly on the grill

And so the staff grilled the pork belly to perfection, locking in all that juice, ready to eat haha.

Two salts, meljeot and grilled baek-kimchi: how to eat it

The first bite has to be with salt!! Choosing between two pricier salts — Himalayan salt and Andes salt — and dipping the meat in... the juices really burst out and it's just so good, ugh.

First bite of pork belly dipped in Himalayan and Andes salt

A combo the staff recommended!! A piece of nicely grilled baek-kimchi with pork belly, plus some pickled chili ~! Tangy, with juices bursting out in the middle, this savory pork belly combo is seriously a mukbang-worthy pairing, ugh.

Thanks to the variety of pickled sides, the pork belly never gets a chance to feel greasy haha.

Piling on some fresh shredded scallion too was great ~! This Moran samgyeopsal spot also has melon shrimp jeotgal haha. You can taste Jeju all over again.

Finishing with cauldron rice and beef brisket doenjang stew

Another strength of Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui!! They sell cauldron rice~~ One bowl of piping hot cauldron rice and the whole mood heats right up.

Freshly served hot cauldron rice

Now that the rice is here, it's time to wrap up some ssam (lettuce wraps) haha. The wrap greens are fresh and delicious too.

They also give you squid jeotgal (fermented squid) if you order cauldron rice~~ Rice, pork belly, squid jeotgal... there's no room to get tired of any of it.

The bubbling doenjang stew that comes with the set! There's beef brisket in it too, so it's really generous.

So savory and comforting haha. Seasoned just right and hearty — this doenjang stew is a must, ugh.

Savory doenjang stew eaten alongside cauldron rice

You can't not eat the cauldron rice and doenjang stew together... Truly, the meat, the stew, the rice — we ate it all up properly and headed home haha. If you're looking for a Moran samgyeopsal spot! Definitely give Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui a try ~
