Three hanwoo cuts under ₩100,000 at a Yongin butcher BBQ: Dongbaek

In short

Dongbaek Hanokjip is a hanok-style charcoal grill butcher restaurant on Eondong-ro in Giheung-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. A couple arrived at 4pm, picked three cuts of 1++ hanwoo (Korean beef) — chuck flap, sirloin and flat iron — at the butcher counter, added doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and rice, and still paid under ₩100,000. Of the three cuts at Dongbaek Hanokjip, the hanwoo sirloin won: clean, nutty and the best of the table.

Went out for a proper protein refuel with some hanwoo (Korean beef) recently — since it's a butcher restaurant the meat was extra fresh, and it was great value too, so I wanted to recommend it~ Went on a good opportunity, but even though the price is reasonable, the 1++ hanwoo just melts in your mouth, seriously recommend it,,, here we go~~

Hanok-shaped exterior of Dongbaek Hanokjip charcoal grill butcher restaurant

True to its name, the place is shaped like a hanok (traditional Korean house) so you can spot it from far away~ It's about 100 meters from Eojeong Station toward the Eojeong furniture complex — drive alongside the light rail line and you'll find it on the right side of the road~! haha

Large dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant

Parking at Dongbaek Hanokjip and the quietest hour to go

There's a pretty big parking lot out back!!! Thanks to that we drove over without any worries even though it was a driving distance from us haha. Also the parking lines were nice and wide. FYI I went around 4pm, before dinner time, so there were plenty of seats!! By the time I left around 5pm, families were starting to pour in haha. Just a heads up!!!

Weekday lunch specials and the dining room

Grilling hanwoo is great, but the fact that you can get bulgogi, naengmyeon (cold noodles), or yukhoe naengmyeon on the weekday lunch special for a low price...! When does a ₩10,000 meal come around these days…👍🏻👍🏻

Wide, clean dining room seating
Interior with group-friendly seating

Comfortable tables and chairs, and the space is wide and clean, so it seemed perfect for groups and families alike. The ventilation must be good too — no lingering meat smell, super pleasant!!!

Spacious grill table for two

With just the two of us, the space felt really spacious and comfortable haha. You order through the kiosk!

And here's the detail that showed the owner really cares. The rice isn't just any rice — it's Suhyangmi. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

How to pick your own hanwoo at the butcher counter

At Dongbaek Hanokjip you can order beef or pork off the menu, or — since it's a butcher restaurant — buy meat straight from the butcher counter and grill it yourself. We debated the raw galbi set but decided on the butcher counter + doenjang jjigae + rice instead. To the butcher counter we go! 🥩🥩🥩

The butcher counter is right next to the counter by the entrance!!!

  • Pick the cut you want from the meat fridge
  • Take it to the counter to scan the barcode
  • Bring it back and grill it — that's it!!

Fresh butcher-shop meat grilled right on the spot! (No setting up or cleaning up a table at home, amazing)

Chuck flap, shrimp-cut sirloin and skirt on display

Chuck flap, shrimp-cut sirloin, sirloin, skirt and more — such a variety of cuts, and the prices are genuinely reasonable for hanwoo…!!! Everything looked super fresh too, so I agonized over what to pick ㅠㅠㅋㅋ

Browsing the meat display case to choose cuts

In the end, wanting to taste nutty, clean and tender all at once, we went with chuck flap, sirloin, and skirt haha. And getting all three cuts came out under ₩100,000;;; insane 🫢

Self-serve bar and side dishes at Dongbaek Hanokjip

At the self-serve bar you can grab extra sauces and side dishes haha. Having perilla leaves is such a love…? The salt was coarse rock salt too, so good. Ever since I got served what was basically MSG salt at some other beef place, my rule for judging whether a beef restaurant is legit has become the salt.. yes, this one passes

Self-serve bar with sauces and coarse salt

The owner really knows what's up,,, there's a soju freezer…🍻 We came by car so we couldn't drink, but ice-cold soju like that — if we'd walked here we definitely would have had some… Beer and drinks are self-serve too, grab what you want haha, it all gets added to the bill at the end!

Side dishes~~ of course you get the basics like white kimchi, pickled onion, salad, and they also had the gochujang ssamjang mix and corn macaroni salad I really love so — not saying I cleaned them out, but,,haha

Grilling chuck flap, sirloin and flat iron over charcoal

First up: hanwoo chuck flap

Now let's put the hanwoo on the grill. Starting with the tender chuck flap~~~ The grill plate is set up in a circle around the charcoal so oil barely splatters ㅠ The owner really thought this through ㅜㅜ nice

^___^ Feast day. The chuck flap is thin so it cooks fast. Clean taste, not greasy at all 힣

Hanwoo chuck flap on the charcoal grill

Please just look at that shine,,, tender all over, not a single tough part, absolutely delicious. I even took a video hoping to capture that glossy sheen ㅎ;

The winner of the day: hanwoo sirloin

Next up, hanwoo sirloin. Dun dun. This was seriously insane. My husband and I both picked this as the top cut of the day ㅠㅠ Everyone should really come to Dongbaek Hanokjip and try the hanwoo sirloin…

1++ hanwoo sirloin grilling over charcoal

Ah; the moment it hit my mouth… it's genuinely clean yet nutty, the flavor just spreads through your whole mouth. I don't have the words for it besides just — delicious;; zero resistance when cutting with the scissors, so tender ㅠ

Finishing with flat iron

The grand finale — skirt (bucheotsal). It just melts on your tongue, melts;;;;;; truly melt-in-your-mouth, no exaggeration. You can see the marbling, and the fat is spread evenly enough that the nutty richness plus tenderness is fantastic. Could get greasy if you keep eating it though, so personally I'd recommend eating the skirt first and the sirloin after.

Suhyangmi rice and doenjang jjigae loaded with beef

Now for the palate cleanser — doenjang jjigae and white rice. Glossy white rice cooked with Suhyangmi paired with a BBQ-restaurant-style doenjang stew with ssamjang mixed in — how could that not be good

Suhyangmi white rice and doenjang jjigae with meat

What impressed me even about the doenjang jjigae was that it's packed with meat inside… no wonder it tasted so rich and deep ㅠ

Overall this place felt like the owner genuinely wanted to serve >>>delicious<<< food,, not just going through the motions with lazy side dishes, but real ambition to serve truly tasty banchan, dishes, and genuinely good meat too ㅎ Anyway, out of all the BBQ places we've been to as a couple recently — not counting work dinners — this one was quite excellent!!🫶🏻

"Want value for money but don't want to sacrifice on taste…?" If you're looking for a good BBQ spot in Dongbaek, highly recommend!!
