10am dwaeji gukbap before Ulsan trip near Busan Station: Yeongdong

It was the weekend my fiancé and I were heading to the Ulsan furniture show. We had to move fast from the morning, so I got up earlier than usual and decided we'd eat an early lunch before setting off for Ulsan.

Since we'd be walking around a lot looking at furniture, I figured we should fill up well first, so I searched for restaurants near Busan Station that open early in the morning. That's how I found Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap near Busan Station!

I liked that it opens at 10am, so you can eat even that early. If you're looking for a good spot near Busan Station, the location is great, and best of all you can get both milmyeon (buckwheat noodles) and dwaeji gukbap (pork soup) here, so it's a good pick when you can't decide on a menu.

We parked at Sindongyang Parking Lot and walked over to Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap.

The scene inside at 10am on a weekend

I figured it would still be quiet since it was weekend morning, but when we walked in, plenty of customers were already eating in the spacious dining room. More than half the tables were full, so I thought, yep, this really is a proper Busan Station favorite.

The dining room was spacious, so even with people around it never felt cramped. It was also fun to see autographs posted here and there around the place.

Dwaeji gukbap or milmyeon? What we ended up ordering

We'd come planning to eat dwaeji gukbap, but looking around, most customers seemed to be eating milmyeon, and I noticed that Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap makes its own noodle dough in-house, so it's known for milmyeon too. My fiancé and I went back and forth deciding between dwaeji gukbap and milmyeon, but since our goal was to eat something filling, we ended up ordering dwaeji gukbap and a suyuk baekban (boiled pork set).

After ordering, we waited a bit and the basic side dishes were set out first.

Milky broth vs. spicy dadegi broth

I ordered the suyuk baekban, and my fiancé ordered the dwaeji gukbap. I like to eat gukbap (soup with rice) as-is with the milky broth, so I just seasoned mine with salted shrimp and salt, while my fiancé loaded his up with dadegi (spicy chili paste) to turn the broth red.

After one bite of the red dwaeji gukbap, my fiancé was super satisfied — the broth was piping hot and packed with meat.

Suyuk baekban — best wrapped in lettuce

I had the suyuk baekban. I tried dipping the suyuk (boiled pork) in soy sauce, and also wrapped it in the lettuce that came with it — the suyuk was tasty on its own, but wrapping it really was the best way to eat it. One lettuce wrap, one spoonful of the milky broth, and my stomach was genuinely full from that early morning. Busan really does mean dwaeji gukbap 👍

My fiancé kept saying how good it was as he ate, which made me quietly proud of finding such a good spot 💛 That day we had to do a lot of walking around looking at furniture at the Ulsan show, so I was really glad we'd eaten this well beforehand.
