What kind of place is Hoepanjang Sangbong?
Hoepanjang Sangbong is an aged-sashimi (sukseonghoe) restaurant on Bongujae-ro 33-gil near Sangbong Station in Jungnang, Seoul. I'd heard their sashimi platter comes out really generous, so with the weather finally cooling down, I went to check out this spot that's been getting buzz as a top aged-sashimi place near Sangbong.
I stopped by after work, and it was already packed — no wonder it's known as one of the go-to bars near Sangbong Station for a good vibe! 🫢

Each table has its own tablet for ordering, so it was super easy — no need to flag down staff, just browse the menu and tap what you want.
What I ordered:
- 🍱 Assorted sashimi 8-kind (small) set (₩54,000)

What free side dishes come with the sashimi set?
The basic banchan at Hoepanjang Sangbong included corn cheese, mussel soup, silkworm pupa soup, and jeon pancakes. The moment I finished ordering, these all got set on the table — and honestly, even the basic banchan blew me away!
Sizzling savory corn cheese, spicy-refreshing mussel soup, nutty silkworm pupa soup, and golden-brown jeon pancakes... Most sashimi restaurants keep the basic side dishes pretty minimal, but Hoepanjang Sangbong fills out even the sukidashi with hearty, labor-intensive dishes. Extremely satisfying. 💯

Is the 54,000-won 8-kind sashimi set enough for two?
The assorted sashimi 8-kind (small) at Hoepanjang Sangbong is ₩54,000, and it's just right — plenty for two people. It's not just sashimi on its own; the whole set comes together as a beautifully thought-out spread of things to pair with it.
Even though it's labeled the small size, the assorted sashimi platter was genuinely generous. The sashimi is aged and sliced thick, giving it a distinctively chewy, satisfying bite. Best of all, it included seasonal gizzard shad (jeoneo) — such a nice surprise! 🤤
This one platter also came with mini mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup) and hoe-muchim (spicy seasoned raw fish).

How does the seasonal gizzard shad taste?
It's the height of gizzard shad season right now, and the rich, oily, savory flavor really came through in the sashimi included with the set — such a nice surprise. The more you chew, the more that savory depth spreads across your palate. Seasonal fish really is on another level. 🤍

Making your own sushi with gopchang gim and vinegared rice
The Hoepanjang Sangbong set also comes with gopchang gim (a thick-textured seaweed) and vinegared sushi rice, so you can wrap your own sushi at the table. And this isn't just any seaweed — the crunch on this gopchang gim is next level!
It's on a completely different plane from regular seasoned or roasted seaweed — crisp and crunchy, with a distinctive nutty flavor that spreads with each bite. Wrapped around the sashimi, it takes the texture up several notches.

With the vinegared sushi rice on the side, wrapping it all up is basically homemade sushi!!!! Lay a thick, chewy piece of aged sashimi on the tangy-sweet vinegared rice, add a dab of the house sauce or a bit of wasabi, then wrap it in the crispy gopchang gim — it genuinely rivals sushi from a proper Japanese restaurant! The rice itself was perfectly seasoned, which really brought out the sashimi's umami ><
If you order the small assorted sashimi platter at Hoepanjang Sangbong, definitely try making your own sushi with the gopchang gim and vinegared rice. It goes so well with drinks — highly recommend!🤍

Final verdict: is 54,000 won good value at Hoepanjang Sangbong?
This is already a great aged-sashimi spot near Sangbong even if you just dip the sashimi in soy sauce, but being able to wrap it into DIY sushi with gopchang gim and vinegared rice made the meal so much more filling and satisfying. 🤍 With banchan this complete, it's easy to see why this place has become known as one of the best bars near Sangbong Station.
This much quality and quantity for around ₩50,000 is genuinely great value! 💯👍 If you love aged sashimi, Hoepanjang Sangbong is a must-visit bar near Sangbong Station. Chewy aged sashimi, seasonal gizzard shad, and that crispy gopchang gim with vinegared rice combo — it was all so good I'm already planning to go back soon. Highly recommend it for when you want good sashimi and a happy drink.
