Wild ginseng eel dinner after work in Myeonmok: Cheonsangae Jangeoga

In short

Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch is a charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant on the main road between Sagajeong and Myeonmok stations in Jungnang, Seoul. After work, the writer came with her mom for the signature Charcoal-Grilled Snow Mushroom Wild Ginseng Eel 2-Person Set, which brought two domestic japonica eels with snow mushroom, cultivated wild ginseng root, stone sushi and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). The eel was grilled to order with no fishy smell, crisp outside and tender inside, and the grilled potato and nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea) finish made Cheonsangae Jangeoga an easy pick for a family dinner.

I went with my mom after work for a proper energy-boosting meal at Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch 🤎 It's already known as a real charcoal-grilled eel spot in Myeonmok-dong, and it lived up to that reputation — I was so satisfied.

There was no fishy or muddy smell at all, the ingredients felt genuinely fresh, and even the neat, tidy side dishes down to the finish were perfect — I kept being impressed the whole meal. The upscale atmosphere also made it a great spot for gatherings. Here's my review of Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch!

The moment I stepped inside, it felt clean and pleasant, and the wood interior gave off a nicely upscale vibe. Private room rental is available and groups of up to 60 can be seated, making it a great spot for family gatherings, company dinners, parents' birthdays, and 60th/70th/80th birthday celebrations.

There were basic 4-person tables as well as group seating for larger parties. The spacing between tables was wide, so the meal felt private and comfortable, and the tables, chairs, and grill area were all kept spotless ✨ The self-serve bar space was also neatly arranged.

With the friendly staff and the clean, upscale atmosphere, it felt like exactly the kind of comfortable, elegant place you'd want to bring your parents to for a treat.

What's in the Charcoal-Grilled Snow Mushroom Wild Ginseng Eel 2-Person Set?

We ordered the restaurant's signature dish, the Charcoal-Grilled Snow Mushroom Wild Ginseng Eel 2-Person Set. From the table setting to the composition, every detail was full of care, so it really felt like being treated to something special. Two plump, thick domestic japonica eels came out with snow mushroom, and they were so cleanly prepared they had a glossy shine.

The set's stone sushi and doenjang stew came together too. We even made eel sushi with the tail piece haha. The doenjang stew broth was rich and deep, and it paired really well with the eel.

The highlight of this set was definitely the cultivated wild ginseng roots! The subtle aroma of wild ginseng elevated the eel's flavor even more.

How the charcoal-grilled eel tastes when the staff grill it for you

There was no earthy or fishy smell typical of freshwater eel at all — just savory, clean juices spreading through my whole mouth, it was so delicious. The owner grilled it all and cut it into bite-sized pieces for us, which made it easy to eat.

Golden-brown, perfectly grilled eel 💫 Doesn't it look amazing? The portion was generous enough — plenty for two.

Grilled over intense direct charcoal fire, it was the textbook definition of crispy outside, soft and moist inside 🙌🏻

Eating the eel with shredded ginger, wrap vegetables and snow mushroom

Loading up the special sauce with shredded ginger tasted great, and wrapping it in fresh lettuce made it taste amazing without any greasiness. Eating it together with the snow mushroom doubled the savoriness — there were so many combinations to try, which made it even more enjoyable.

Eel topped with fermented oyster relish

Adding eori guljeot (spicy salted oysters) on top

Topping a piece of nicely grilled eel with salty, spicy fermented oyster relish (eori gulit) was pure umami explosion. The eel's savoriness combined with the spiciness of the oyster relish and cut right through the richness — they went so well together.

Cross-section of plump eel flesh

The plump, tender eel flesh was even softer, and the more you chewed, the more clean, deep flavor came through — savory and delicious.

Dessert at Cheonsangae Jangeoga: grilled potato and nurungji sungnyung

At the end, they put potatoes on the grill for us, so we finished with soft, moist grilled potato for dessert 🥔 I can't forget my mom's happy face looking at that potato ☺️

Bowl of nurungji sungnyung served at the end

But dessert wasn't over yet — nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea) came out to finish the meal. Just one bowl of this rice tea warmed me up from the inside and made me feel properly nourished 🤍

Final verdict: a nourishing family dinner spot in Myeonmok-dong

Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch was a rare, genuine find that let us enjoy fresh, top-quality freshwater eel, the smoky flavor of direct charcoal grilling, and the nourishment of wild ginseng all at once 🫶🏻 It wasn't just the eel that was delicious — the well-rounded set, the finishing nurungji sungnyung, the tidy side dishes, and the upscale atmosphere all left me satisfied!

I'm planning to come back soon with mom, dad, and grandpa haha. If you want proper grilled freshwater eel near Myeonmok-dong or Sagajeong Station, I highly recommend Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch.
