Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch is an indoor pet-friendly makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant near Sokcho Beach in Gangwon. The writer wheeled her dog in a stroller and ordered deulmemak (perilla oil makguksu) at 13,000 won, pollack sashimi makguksu at 13,000 won and solo suyuk (boiled pork) at 17,000 won with 4,000 won of extra pollack sashimi, all served with noodles made in-house from Bongpyeong buckwheat flour mixed with squid ink and reishi mushroom, so the colour and chew differ from ordinary makguksu. For anyone travelling with a dog who wants a different take on Sokcho makguksu, Sokcho Topgol Makguksu is worth a stop.

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a chodang sundubu (soft tofu) Korean restaurant on Nanseolheon-ro in Gangneung, run under the name of Korean culinary master Jeong Eunsuk. On the first morning of a family trip the writer arrived right at the 8 a.m. opening, ordered the Chodang Myeongpum set meal for three at 25,000 won each plus a bowl of rice, picked the spicy version of the sundubu hot pot, and ate tofu samhap and grilled kodari (half-dried pollock) for breakfast. The heat was sharp but the finish clean, light enough for a morning meal and worth repeating on the next Gangneung trip.

The seasoning at Sokcho Topgol Makguksu tasted clean rather than MSG-heavy, so everyone felt comfortable after the meal.

Gangneung soft tofu restaurant with a no-salt baby: Jeong Eunsuk

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Korean restaurant in Gangneung serving chodang sundubu (Gangneung-style soft tofu), a short walk from Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Park. We ordered the Chodang Myeongpum table for two and added boiled pork, which brought a white soft tofu hot pot, tofu samhap and seasoned codari (half-dried pollock), and there were plenty of baby chairs for our one-year-old. The white hot pot was so mild and nutty that our baby, still eating salt-free, kept asking for more.

Special tonkotsu ramen at 9am opening in Sokcho: Ichiba Ramen

Ichiba Ramen is a tonkotsu ramen restaurant near the public parking lot entrance of Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market in Yeongnang-dong, Sokcho. Opening at 9am, it made a perfect breakfast-and-lunch hangover meal on day two of the trip, with a special tonkotsu ramen (₩15,000) featuring a rich but never salty broth and huge char siu with zero funky smell. Two ramen lovers agreed it was the best they'd had, counting Korea and Japan combined.

Yangyang café with parking and restroom tips for a 4-person family

Cafe Dunchi is a floating café and water sports center on the lower Namdaecheon river in Yangyang, Gangwon. A family of four took two drinks to go and drove a self-piloted electric boat (₩35,000 for 30 minutes) out to the middle of the river, found plenty of parking in the lot before the bridge, but had to use the public restroom near the entrance since the café itself has none. It's a spot worth recommending to families who want a boat ride and a view of river, sea, and mountains all in one place.

Bongpyeong buckwheat noodles with no wait on weekdays: Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon
