Charcoal black pork BBQ with radish salad refills: Nopo Dwaeji Aewol

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a black pork barbecue restaurant near Gwakji Beach in Aewol, Jeju. The aged black pork geungogi (thick whole cut) 600g and an extra 400g of pork neck came off the charcoal wire rack with a gentle smoky aroma, thick but juicy and tender, and the musaengchae (fresh radish salad) was refilled three to four times. Between the smoky black pork and the tender pork in the kimchi jjigae, Nopo Dwaeji Aewol made for a fully satisfying meal.

Noheung-dong black pork restaurant with an aging fridge: Pork80 Jeju

Pork80 Jeju Airport Branch is a black pork restaurant in Noheung-dong, Jeju, near Dream Tower, certified to serve Nanchuk Matdon native Jeju black pork. Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방) is an omegi-tteok (Jeju rice cake) specialty shop on Noyeon-ro in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju, selling 2-, 3- and 4-compartment thank-you gift boxes alongside nationwide delivery. On the way to Jeju Airport I picked up 20 gift-wrapped omegi-tteok for 22,000 won, then tried the tangerine and black sesame flavors on the spot with a free pumpkin injeolmi the owner pressed into my hand. Between the chewy texture and the neat gift packaging, Suragan Tteokbang is a shop worth ordering from again by delivery.

Hamdeok black pork BBQ with dol hareubang plating: Jeju Samchun

Jeju Samchun is a low-temperature-aged black pork grill restaurant on Sinbuk-ro in Jocheon-eup, near Hamdeok Beach in Jeju. The Jocha Set brings thick-cut pork neck and five-layer pork belly, grilled at the table by staff and eaten with salt, myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) and myeongnan gimssam (pollock roe in seaweed), and a Naver photo review event added a free kimchi jjigae. Between the dol hareubang (Jeju stone grandfather) decorations and the white kimchi plating, Jeju Samchun is a meal that pleases the eyes as much as the mouth.

Sea urchin seaweed soup set for two: Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, Jeju

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant serving mackerel braised with aged kimchi, on the road into the Jungmun resort area in Seogwipo, Jeju. On a late-summer trip the writer came for a late breakfast and ordered the braised mackerel and abalone hot-stone rice set for two (36,000 won) plus a separate abalone and sea urchin seaweed soup (15,000 won), then filled the table from the self-serve bar with ssam vegetables, black pork jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), japchae (glass noodles), four side dishes and abalone porridge. With a large car park and quick table turnover, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is an easy, low-stress choice for a family meal.

Garlic mareung oranda taste test at Jeju Dongmun Market: Cheongchuni

Cheongchuni Oranda is an oranda and traditional snack shop just inside Gate 8-1 of Jeju Dongmun Market. After sampling a few kinds, the writer bought the ₩12,000 mareung (garlic) oranda for room snacks and four donut oranda flavors — chocolate, cookies and cream, matcha, hwang cheese — at ₩3,500 each for the road. The three-layer mareung oranda offers great volume and value, and matcha came out as the favorite donut flavor.

Close to Aewol's Randy's Donuts and café street, Handam Guksu is an easy stop for travelers getting around Jeju by car.

Weekend tasting of garlic oranda and gwajul at Jeju Dongmun Market

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a shop inside Jeju's Dongmun Market selling handmade oranda (soft rice puff snacks) and gwajul (fried rice cookies) that aren't hard or crunchy. On a weekend visit, the owner offered tastings of yuzu, nut, and garlic oranda plus all four gwajul flavors before a pack of garlic (mareung) oranda and gwajul, ₩10,000, was chosen. The texture is soft enough for elders and kids alike, making it a solid Jeju souvenir pick.
