Jeju rice cake shop for thank-you gift boxes: Suragan Tteokbang

In short

Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방) is an omegi-tteok (Jeju rice cake) specialty shop on Noyeon-ro in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju, selling 2-, 3- and 4-compartment thank-you gift boxes alongside nationwide delivery. On the way to Jeju Airport I picked up 20 gift-wrapped omegi-tteok for 22,000 won, then tried the tangerine and black sesame flavors on the spot with a free pumpkin injeolmi the owner pressed into my hand. Between the chewy texture and the neat gift packaging, Suragan Tteokbang is a shop worth ordering from again by delivery.

There's always something you end up bringing back from a Jeju trip, right? Omegi-tteok (rice cake made with millet)! I'm a total tteok addict, so I always end up packing some to take home. On my way back from Jeju, heading toward the airport, I stopped by a rice cake shop and picked some up — and it was SO good. Let me introduce Suragan Tteokbang, a rice cake shop near Jeju Airport.

Where is Suragan Tteokbang? A rice cake shop in Nohyeong-dong on the way to Jeju Airport

Suragan Tteokbang is an omegi-tteok specialty shop at 41 Noyeon-ro, Nohyeong-dong, Jeju. I stopped by to pick up on my way to Jeju Airport, and it's also a convenient spot to swing by for omegi-tteok during a trip.

Since they also do nationwide delivery, I'm planning to reorder omegi-tteok for this Chuseok.

Walking in, there were all kinds of rice cakes on display, which made browsing fun.

Inside the factory-sized Jeju rice cake shop

Suragan Tteokbang, this Jeju omegi-tteok shop, was basically factory-sized. Since it's a Jeju rice cake shop that ships nationwide, there were shipping boxes stacked right next to the store. They wrapped up soft, freshly made-looking rice cakes for me as soon as I ordered.

Suragan Tteokbang is also famous for gift rice cakes in Jeju. The gift boxes come in 2-, 3-, and 4-piece configurations, so you can choose based on the occasion, number of people, or budget. It's nice for gifting rice cakes to family or friends as a Jeju trip souvenir, but it also seemed like a good option for anyone organizing events or gatherings on Jeju looking for return gifts.

The free pumpkin injeolmi stole the show

I got the 20-piece gift wrap of omegi-tteok at Suragan Tteokbang. The packaging was so nice it was perfect for gift-giving.

This was the free rice cake the owner handed me! I was literally about to burst from eating so much and had zero room left... but it was so chewy I found myself opening it up without even thinking, haha.

The moment I bit into it, there was a light, sweet pumpkin flavor. If it were too strong it might be a bit much, but it hit just the right balance — honestly the best pumpkin injeolmi I've ever had.

Pumpkin injeolmi this chewy — I was genuinely thrown off. The flavor was great, but the chewiness was truly on another level.

With my 20-piece pack of Suragan Tteokbang omegi-tteok in hand near Jeju Airport, I made time for a taste test before heading to the airport.

How to store omegi-tteok, and why Suragan Tteokbang is a last-day stop

Here are Suragan Tteokbang's storage instructions.

  • Spread out and freeze immediately upon receiving
  • Do not use the fridge or a kimchi fridge
  • Eat within 2 hours of taking out of the freezer
  • Delivery items don't thaw well naturally, so remove the packaging, cut in half, and microwave for 20-30 seconds

Because rice cakes need special handling, I'd definitely recommend making this your very last stop on a Jeju trip!

Omegi-tteok packed together with an ice pack

They tucked an ice pack inside the rice cakes, so I could keep them fresh all the way home.

Five omegi-tteok flavors: tangerine and black sesame win

Soybean powder omegi-tteok / black sesame omegi-tteok. So I packed 5 different kinds of omegi-tteok in total.

A set of five kinds of omegi-tteok

I tried the tangerine omegi-tteok, which looked the most delicious. Coated with castella breadcrumbs on the outside, tangerine omegi-tteok is a distinctive rice cake you can only really get in Jeju.

Look at how the rice cake tears apart... The chewy tteok and the soft red bean paste go together so well, and the tangerine dough gives it a unique, standout flavor.

This tangerine omegi-tteok is a flavor anyone, of any age, would love — perfect for gifting. Highly, highly recommend.

Next I tried the black sesame omegi-tteok. I knew it was black sesame, but the inside was yellow — what was going on? I was curious, haha.

Turns out the yellow inside is because it's pumpkin dough coated directly with ground black sesame! So the rice cake inside is actually yellow pumpkin tteok. This kind of quality makes you want to eat it again immediately.

Is Suragan Tteokbang worth a stop? Final verdict

I meant to just pack up Suragan Tteokbang's omegi-tteok as gifts, but I ended up scarfing down 3 of them on the spot — that's how good this Jeju omegi-tteok shop really is. I'm planning to reorder by delivery myself, so I can confidently recommend it. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out!
