Aewol noodle restaurant with tuna bibim noodles: Handam Guksu, Jeju

Looking for a local favorite in Aewol, Jeju, I tried Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch — a can't-go-wrong kind of place.

Search for pork noodles (gogi guksu) in Jeju and you'll get a flood of results. But once you actually have to pick one, it's really hard to tell which is genuinely good.

I visited thinking about a bunch of things: which pork noodle place near the sea on the Aewol café street, whether it's mostly tourists or locals go too, whether the other menu items besides pork noodles are decent, whether it's good to bring a kid, whether parking is easy, and so on.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch turned out to be a place I was glad I went to — in terms of taste, menu, and location, all of it.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is at 1F, 33 Aewol-ro, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do, near Handam Beach in Aewol. The main menu includes beef bone broth pork noodles / bibim noodles / mala pork noodles / dombe suyuk / handmade black pork tteokgalbi.

Parking: there are about 3 spots right in front of the restaurant — grab one if the timing's right! If you park at Handam Trail Parking Lot or Handam Public Parking Lot within a 5-minute walk, you get 1 hour free, and I parked at Handam Trail Parking Lot and got that discount. Note that Handam Parking Lot 1 and 2 are not eligible for the support, so it's worth checking before you park.

Hours are Tue–Sun 10:00–20:30, Mon 10:00–16:20. Naver reservations available, family-friendly, and there's a baby chair.

Floor-to-ceiling Handam Beach view and the self-serve bar

Aewol is even more famous as a café-street area with ocean views, a well-known Jeju tourist spot. Walking into the restaurant near Handam Beach, the floor-to-ceiling windows opened up a wide, refreshing sea view — the second I stepped in I thought, wow, this view is amazing. Genuinely a confirmed view-restaurant.

The menu at this local favorite in Aewol, Jeju includes beef bone broth pork noodles, a mountain-pile bibim noodles, mala pork noodles, dombe suyuk (sliced boiled pork), and handmade black pork tteokgalbi.

It's also a good spot for a group where one person wants pork noodles with broth and another wants bibim noodles. This time, instead of ordering just one dish, we got bibim noodles + beef bone broth noodles + dombe pork suyuk and shared them all. One thing I personally loved: ocean view, great taste, and reasonable prices too.

When you think Jeju pork noodles, the broth version is the first thing that comes to mind. You haven't really had a food trip in Jeju unless you've had pork noodles at least once — so at Handam Guksu I ordered the beef bone broth pork noodles.

It's a beef-bone-based broth paired with Jeju pork, and lately I've really been drawn to that kind of broth dish. The broth was rich but not greasy, so I ended up picking up the whole bowl and slurping it down — so good. I've already bookmarked this one on Naver Maps as an Aewol favorite to come back to.

It was a perfect fit when I wanted something warm and filling for a meal.

Especially when traveling around Jeju's sights all day, your energy tends to drop faster than expected — and having noodles and meat in warm broth like this made for a really filling meal.

I'm a slow eater, but the noodles stayed springy without getting soggy the whole time I ate, and the crunchy bean sprouts added a refreshing savory note along with good texture.

If you've never had Jeju pork noodles before, starting with this kind of classic broth version at a real local favorite is a great way to leave with a good first impression of the food.

Want it tangy and spicy? Dongchimi bibim noodles with tuna

Even in September, Jeju is still pretty hot if you're not in the shade or catching a breeze. My mom, who was feeling the heat even in the car, picked the spicy bibim noodles over broth.

It's loaded with vegetables like cucumber and bean sprouts, which suited both my mom and me since we like lots of veggies. And this was my first time having bibim noodles with tuna in it — turns out it's a nice change from the usual tuna vegetable bibimbap, quite the specialty.

A generous amount of refreshingly cold, slushy dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth came on the side — you can pour some into the bibim noodles and sip the rest between bites as a tangy, cooling palate cleanser. I'm a fan of dongchimi noodles too, so I loved how generous the broth portion was.

We ordered it alongside the beef bone broth noodles and alternated between the two — it would've been such a shame to miss out on either flavor.

If the broth noodles are the comforting, filling option, the bibim noodles really wake up your palate — a great combo to split when you're visiting with others.

So if you're the type who prefers bibim noodles over broth-based pork noodles when hunting for a Jeju spot, no need to worry here.

Dombe pork suyuk, the best side to share with the noodles

And personally, I was glad we also ordered the dombe pork suyuk. A Jeju trip wouldn't feel complete without dombe pork. I also always seek out Jeju restaurants with dombe pork specifically for my child, who doesn't eat noodles.

I usually prefer the warm version of suyuk, so when I saw it listed as cold dombe pork, I worried it might be too cold or not very tasty — turned out to be unnecessary worry.

It wasn't overly cold and was tender — great on its own with a bit of jeotgal (salted seafood) on top, and it paired really well with the noodles too.

As a mom, my standard for a good travel restaurant always comes down to whether there's something my kid can eat, and whether they actually eat it well.

I ordered a bowl of rice, put some meat on top, and fed it to my kid — she ate it well, so by our family's standard this is a 5-star local favorite near Handam Beach. Oh, and though we didn't open it since we didn't need it, they thoughtfully gave us a pack of gim (dried seaweed) as a freebie for visiting with a kid. Little things like that are exactly what make me want to come back.
