Weekend tasting of garlic oranda and gwajul at Jeju Dongmun Market

Made another trip to Jeju!! Today's post is about a delicious handmade oranda shop I found while wandering around Dongmun Market — bought some as souvenirs and here's the review!

Finding Cheongchuni Oranda inside Dongmun Market

Head into the market following the orange signboard and it's close to the Gate 2 and Gate 9 side. I was wondering what to buy as a Dongmun Market gift, and oranda never fails, haha.

Cheongchuni Oranda has two locations — Dongmun Market branch and Olle Market branch — and I visited the Dongmun Market one. Anyone else admit gwajul is basically snack feed you can't stop reaching for? They say they use their own method to make oranda that's soft rather than hard, so I grabbed some as a souvenir.

Generous tastings even on a weekend

Plenty of samples. The owner kept handing out pieces, saying you have to taste it before you buy. Even with a weekend crowd, they explained everything patiently — really kind.

What flavors of oranda are there?

• ✅ Yuzu oranda - the basic flavor, with a bright citrusy tang that's the appeal
• ✅ Nut oranda - oranda combined with nuts, with an excellent nuttiness
• ✅ Garlic oranda - a subtle garlic aroma is the charm. First time trying garlic oranda, and both the scent and taste made me want to buy it

Prices for square oranda

There's also a square-shaped oranda: square gamtae (seaweed) oranda ₩4.0k, square nut oranda ₩3.5k, square garlic (mareung) oranda ₩3.5k. Available individually too. Buy 3 for ₩10,000! Getting three is the smart choice.

If you can't decide with so many options, the oranda gift set is a great choice too. Everything is individually wrapped and the packaging is cute — perfect size for a gift! When you go to Jeju, you've got to bring souvenirs back!

The donut version of oranda

This is the donut-shaped version of oranda. As someone who loves donuts, this oranda really caught my eye.

While tasting, I noticed the gwajul was pretty tasty too.

• ✅ White rice gwajul - crispy and sweet
• ✅ Buckwheat gwajul - nutty and mild
• ✅ Steamed rice gwajul - crispy and sweet

So it comes in these four flavors, and one pack is ₩10,000, which is why I bought it.

The yuzu oranda was personally tasty too. Recommend it if you like bright, sweet flavors.

What I picked: garlic oranda and gwajul

My choice was garlic oranda and gwajul!

The garlic oranda is really soft yet tasty — the kind of texture that both elders and kids would love. Too hard and it's uncomfortable to eat, but this was deliciously soft. The subtle garlic aroma felt like eating garlic baguette, and it made this feel like a genuine Dongmun Market hidden gem.

Goes great with coffee and with milk too. Just be careful — it disappears fast, so keep your wits about you while eating.

Differences between the gwajul flavors

With four gwajul flavors, you get to enjoy a variety — buckwheat and brown rice lean more nutty, while white rice and steamed rice lean sweeter.

This one was also soft rather than hard, and easy to eat.
