Gangseo Korean BBQ with extra pork ribs and geotjeori: Ihwajeong

In short

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant with private rooms near Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. Two diners ordered 2 servings of marinated pork ribs and mul naengmyeon after a workout, then added a 3rd serving and extra geotjeori because the meat was so tender. The sweet marinated ribs paired with the tangy geotjeori (spicy fresh cabbage salad) turned out to be the highlight of the meal.

Signature marinated pork ribs at Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch

After a solid squash session with Dabokpangpang, it was time to refuel haha. What better than protein after a workout~? I was hunting for a BBQ spot and suddenly craved sweet marinated pork ribs, so when I heard about a tender, juicy pork rib place in Balsan, I went straight there!

We came on foot, but there's a 4-story open-air parking lot right next to the restaurant! Looks convenient if you're driving too!

Even from a distance, it has this classic, refined vibe.

Inside with private rooms — good for gatherings?

The moment we walked in, it looked clean and private!

Down the hallway there are these room-style doors!

One area wasn't exactly a separate room, but a spacious place to eat! Looks like groups of 4 or fewer usually get seated here!

Some of the rooms are just like this — nicely private. Seemed perfect for family gatherings or company dinners!

There are set menus and à la carte options! The Ihwajeong set looked good for family gatherings! But since it was just the two of us today, we decided on 3 servings (??haha) of marinated pork ribs + mul naengmyeon!

Extra side dishes and requests are on the kiosk, so we didn't even need to call a staff member — so convenient!

Table seating with bottled water and a baby chair

They have baby chairs and bottled water is provided too.

And then out came the pork ribs and banchan (side dishes)!

Geotjeori, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), shredded scallions to go with the meat, and tangpyeongchae salad as a nice appetizer!

We only ordered 2 servings of pork ribs at first, but it was so good we added 1 more haha. This photo is the 2 servings.

Plate of raw marinated pork ribs, 2 servings

A staff member grilled it for us, so it was the perfect setup to catch up with Dabokpangpang after a while!

144-hour aged ribs, grilled by the staff

You could really feel the moistness of the meat quality — clearly from the 144-hour aging.

This is the amount for 2 servings, but it filled the grill right up!

Grilling pork ribs isn't easy, but this place clearly has its own technique down.

They put the meat on the plate, then grill it again!

And the Ihwajeong staff are honestly grill masters..!!

Usually at pork rib places you grill it yourself (and it ends up burnt more often than not ㅠㅠ)

But here they grill it to just the right juiciness and size, no fuss.

Perfectly grilled marinated pork ribs

Just like this...!!! I honestly thought pork ribs all taste pretty similar,

A piece of pork ribs picked up with chopsticks

but the moment I took a bite... it wasn't dry at all and was so juicy, I was genuinely surprised....... how can it be this tender?!

After that, it went perfectly with the geotjeori and shredded scallions too,

and paired nicely with all the other side dishes too,

Pork ribs enjoyed together with side dishes

so we thought it'd be a shame to stop at 2 servings and added 1 more hahahahahaha

An extra serving of marinated pork ribs ordered

Added more geotjeori too hahahahahaha

Extra plate of geotjeori added to the order

They grilled it at just the right timing so we could enjoy it at its best — so much more tender and moist than the marinated pork ribs I usually eat!

Tender marinated pork ribs grilled just right

The marinated ribs + geotjeori combo

This combo with the geotjeori was my favorite haha. The sweet marinated ribs were perfectly balanced by the tangy, refreshing kick of the geotjeori, so I just kept going back for more. I did this combo on repeat lol.

Mul naengmyeon and pear sherbet for dessert

And then, right on time, the mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth) arrived..!!! Maybe because we'd just worked out, something cold really hit the spot.

The portion was pretty generous too, perfect for sharing with Dabok!

Bibim naengmyeon with galbi might be the classic combo, but the cool, tangy naengmyeon actually went surprisingly well with the sweet marinated ribs too!

A generous bowl of mul naengmyeon

And once we finished eating, they brought out pear sherbet for dessert!

Pear sherbet served as dessert

Meat plus a dessert to finish it off — satisfying right to the end!!!

Overall verdict

At first I thought 2 servings of pork ribs would be plenty~ but I ended up being the one who added a 3rd serving and more geotjeori lol. That's how tender and juicy the meat was — I finally had properly delicious pork ribs after a while! With the private rooms, it also seems great for gatherings, family dinners, or company get-togethers! I think this place will come to mind whenever I'm craving pork ribs in Balsan haha.
