Gwangmyeong Japanese restaurant for gyukatsu and ramen: Hoka Hoka
In short
Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is a Japanese restaurant near Cheolsan Station in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi. I enjoyed gyukatsu grilled on a personal brazier, ramen with a deep but gentle broth, and a rich lemonade. Hoka Hoka is a satisfying choice for a special, neatly presented meal.

Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch near Cheolsan Station
Because it is close to Cheolsan Station, it is very convenient to visit by public transport, and it is perfectly located for meeting up nearby or adding to a date itinerary. The warm, cozy feel of the exterior naturally drew me inside.

What were the atmosphere and first impression like?

When you open the door, you are welcomed by the coziness of a bright yet calm little restaurant in Japan. The wood-toned interior and soft lighting come together to create a place where you can comfortably focus on your meal.
As a homemaker, the first thing I noticed was how impeccably clean the restaurant was. The tables were comfortably spaced and hygiene was clearly well managed, so I could settle in at ease. The staff were also truly kind, which made for such a pleasant first impression. They kindly explained which combinations were popular while I was choosing, so I was able to order without any fuss.
From pre-meal sweet-potato tempura to a neat Japanese home-style meal

After I sat down and finished ordering, a welcome pre-meal service caught my eye. It was sweet-potato tempura served before the main dishes arrived, and I could not help admiring how beautifully it had been fried.
The outside was wonderfully crisp, while one bite released the sweet, soft flavor unique to sweet potato inside. It was the perfect appetizer to awaken the appetite. I could feel the care even in this small service, and I was already in a great mood.

The main dishes that followed were all impressive from the moment I saw them. Served neatly on trays in a Japanese home-style format, they were a feast for the eyes first.

Signature gyukatsu on a personal brazier
The gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet), crisp on the outside and juicy within, truly deserves to be called Hoka Hoka's signature dish. Put as much as you want on the personal brazier at each table, then cook it a little further to your liking—it is such a fun way to eat. The tenderness that seemed to melt in my mouth, along with its savory flavor, was simply excellent.

Ramen that was deep but not overpowering
The ramen's richly simmered broth was so appealing; with the first sip, I felt warmed through. The noodles were cooked just right and pleasantly chewy, and they worked beautifully with the toppings. It had a deep flavor without being overpowering, the sort of taste that anyone, young or old, could enjoy.

A refreshing lemonade finish

After the delicious meal, I ordered a cold lemonade as a palate cleanser. I wanted something to freshen my mouth after finishing all the food, and it was honestly a brilliant choice!
It had plenty of concentrated lemon juice, so the bright tang really came through, and the strong carbonation gave it such a lively, refreshing fizz. It cut right through any richness, and I drank it with such a clean, cool finish—it made the meal perfect to the very end.
Tips for enjoying gyukatsu even more
When eating gyukatsu, adjust the heat of the personal brazier and cook one piece at a time. If you cook it too long, it can become tough, so lightly cook it only until the pinkness fades, then dip it into the house sauce for the best bite.
This place is already known as a popular ramen spot near Cheolsan Station and a great Cheolsan lunch destination, and because there are not many tables inside, a wait can form quickly during peak hours. Visit a little early or aim for a quieter time for a much more comfortable meal.
With its clean atmosphere and attentive service, this will be a choice you will not regret if you are looking for a good Japanese restaurant in Gwangmyeong.
