After a light walk with a friend on Dodoksan in Gwangmyeong, we headed to Bamil Village Food Culture Street for dinner. Dodoksan, with its suspension bridge and wildflower garden, is the kind of place that lifts your mood the whole time you are walking. We were hungry after the hike and wanted something wholesome and filling, so we visited Maehwa Gondeurebap Gwangmyeong Bamil Village Branch (매화곤드레밥 광명밤일마을점).
Maehwa Gondeurebap Gwangmyeong Bamil Village Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant in Bamil Village where you can enjoy gondre pot rice, stir-fried webfoot octopus, cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), and vegetable side dishes together. With ample parking, foothill views, and café spaces that are lovely after a meal, it seemed like a great spot for a family dinner, date, or gathering.
Korean food in Bamil Village after a Dodoksan walk

After walking around Dodoksan with my friend and taking in the suspension bridge and wildflower garden, I found myself craving comforting, balanced Korean food rather than anything overly bold. At the far end of Bamil Village Food Culture Street, Maehwa Gondeurebap Gwangmyeong Bamil Village Branch came into view. The cool breeze from the mountain and green scenery made me feel more relaxed from the moment we arrived.

Spacious parking
This place seemed especially convenient for visitors arriving by car. There is spacious parking for more than 50 cars, so parking did not have to be a source of stress before the meal. For a family meal with parents or a larger group gathering, that generous parking is a real plus.

A full Premium Gondre Fire-Grilled Webfoot Octopus Set Meal
We ordered the Premium Gondre Fire-Grilled Webfoot Octopus Set Meal. Centered around gondre pot rice, the table was generously set with spicy stir-fried webfoot octopus, kimchi, bean sprouts, braised anchovies, roasted seaweed, cheonggukjang, salad, and vegetable side dishes. Rather than pushing just one dish, it was a well-rounded spread of rice, banchan, soup, and a main dish, which I really enjoyed.

How to enjoy gondre pot rice and nurungji
First, I transferred the rice from the gondre pot rice into a bowl. If you pour water over the rice left in the pot, you can enjoy warm, savory nurungji (scorched rice) toward the end of the meal. The gentle fragrance unique to gondre, a wild mountain herb, had naturally infused the rice, and the grains were fluffy and went beautifully with the side dishes. I loved being able to enjoy every bit of one pot of rice, from the first bite to the finish.

There were plenty of ways to eat it, too. I mixed the gondre rice with kimchi, braised anchovies, and cheonggukjang, then wrapped it in roasted seaweed. It was mild but full of savory depth.
Adding a little of the seasoned soy sauce provided with the meal onto the seaweed gave it another layer of flavor. The cheonggukjang was not overwhelmingly pungent, so I thought it would be relatively easy to enjoy even for first-timers or younger diners.

Fire-scented webfoot octopus and foothill views
Having bites of the fire-grilled stir-fried webfoot octopus throughout the meal made the whole spread feel even more abundant. Its spicy, smoky flavor paired wonderfully with the mild gondre rice, and it had a savory quality that kept me reaching for more rice rather than simply tasting hot. If you like a spicy main, the webfoot octopus set should suit you well; they also say you can choose braised semi-dried pollock, soy-sauce pork, or spicy pork depending on your taste.

The foothill view through the window was memorable, too. Set high up in Bamil Village, it gave us the feeling of getting a little fresh air while dining, even though we were close to the city. My friend said that a comfortable meal after the walk made them feel much more refreshed. I especially loved that it is a course where you can naturally combine a drive, a walk, and a meal not far from Seoul.

After eating, we finished with the nurungji we had left to steep in the pot. Slowly eating the warm, nutty scorched rice gently rounded off the lingering heat of the webfoot octopus. There is also a pleasant walking path beside the restaurant, so it would be nice to take a lap and digest rather than getting straight back in the car. The small café near the entrance and the second-floor café space offer coffee or other drinks after the meal, making this a good date course as well.
