Summary first!

A fire-sign daughter who's normally not very filial can become a temporary devoted daughter for just one day 🙋♀️ This is my visit to a private-room Korean restaurant in Gongdeok for my mom's birthday. With every seat in a private room, it's a quiet, cozy, and attentively made course — here's Usu Gongdeok!
Why I chose a Gongdeok restaurant for my mom's birthday

Preparing a special dinner for my mom's birthday, I looked all over for good Gongdeok restaurants. I'd also heard from friends looking for Seoul restaurants for family meetings (sangkyunrye), so I took the chance to research properly and book.
I was excited after reading reviews about the variety of courses, but a little worried the portions might be too small since it was a lunch slot.
Location, parking, hours
- 📍 467 Gongdeok-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Lotte Castle President (Usu, basement level 2)
- 🚇 Connected to Gongdeok Station Exit 2
- 🚗 3 hours free parking with no limit on number of cars — very convenient
- 🕐 11 AM–10 PM (break time 3 PM–5 PM), open year-round
The wood-tone signage and soft lighting gave the place an upscale feel. If you're taking public transit, it's connected directly to the subway, so anyone looking for a Gongdeok restaurant shouldn't have trouble finding it!!

All private rooms — good for a sangkyunrye too?
Walking in, the calm gray-toned interior caught my eye first. The restaurant is made up entirely of private rooms, giving it the quiet, cozy atmosphere befitting a Seoul Korean restaurant, and there's also separate group seating for larger parties. With this kind of private layout, I thought it would also work really well as a Seoul restaurant for family meetings.
Usu's perks, summarized
Let me introduce the solid perks that make Usu in Gongdeok stand out.
Naver Place save event — Save the restaurant on Naver Place and you get a coupon for one free glass of sparkling wine. Register in advance before your reservation and you can use it the same day.
Birthday/anniversary service — If you note it's a birthday or anniversary when booking a Lunch C course or above, they prepare a celebration wine (a glass of sparkling wine, swapped for grape juice if non-alcoholic), a lettering card with a message, a Polaroid photo shoot, and two kinds of anniversary treats!
Corkage free — If you bring your own alcohol, corkage is free, which made me think I should bring wine next time.

Like a proper Seoul Korean restaurant, this place runs separate lunch and dinner courses. You can check the menu composition and ingredients used in the menu photos.
Lunch C course for two, ₩158,000, in order
Birthday celebration wine

They prepared sparkling wine for my mom's birthday, but since I can't drink much, they swapped mine for grape juice — I loved that!
Cheers!! Happy birthday!!
Woo-gye jindeuk (rice porridge)

The moment the spoon went in, steam rose up — from being simmered deeply with hanwoo beef bone broth and chicken stock, the first spoonful was already deep in flavor. Unusually, there were white jelly mushrooms mixed in adding a nutty taste, so honestly the course exploded with promise from the very start!!
Three bite-sized dishes

The visuals were just so, so, so pretty!! I think I took photos like crazy when it first came out!
Bulgogi sandwich — the moment I bit into the brioche, the juice from hanwoo bulgogi and the truffle cream cheese aroma burst out. It was small but the flavor was definitely not light. (As a truffle addict tired of truffle dishes that only smell like truffle, I was nearly in tears eating real truffle flavor after so long.)
Scallop and clam bite — crispy brick pastry on the outside, grilled scallop and clam cream sauce inside, so the contrast in texture was fun. I remember apple and onion bits giving it just enough crunch to cut through the richness.

Sweet shrimp gim-bugak (fried seaweed) — grilled seaweed heavily infused with pollack roe aroma, topped with abalone innard rice and sweet shrimp, seriously so, so, so good. A single bite topped with yuzu sauce, salty with a refreshing finish. From this point on I was yelling even though it wasn't my birthday.

Shiitake and shrimp, zucchini
The peanut tofu sauce was nuttier and softer than expected, wrapping the shiitake mushroom and shrimp comfortably. They said it had wild chervil oil, which made me a little nervous at first, but the aroma was mild and not overpowering, so I had no resistance at all.

It was so delicious that even people who don't like shiitake mushrooms and zucchini could probably eat it!
Five-color gardenia noodles with abalone
The noodles dyed with gardenia were pretty even before you ate them. Mixed with sea tangle dressing and mustard-garlic sauce, it had a pungent yet savory flavor, and the abalone was tender.
Main: 1++ sirloin with hanwoo seaweed soup rice table
They first showed us the pot rice that would come as part of the rice table (how could pot rice look this fancy and pretty too...?)
After we finished taking photos, they brought out the pot rice, seaweed soup, and side dishes all at once, filling the table. (How does it come out looking this pretty...?)

The rice mixed evenly with fish flesh and fragrant vegetables was mild yet deep in flavor — I loved it! Honestly, no exaggeration, it beats most dedicated pot rice restaurants — it's really, really that good!

And now the real star! It was fun watching it go from a beautiful raw look to sizzling as it cooked. When I picked up a piece, the meat really melted so softly.

It's really delicious eaten with the rice too. At first I thought one flavor might overpower the other, but the seasoning was exactly right and nothing stood out too much — so good!
Dessert and birthday treats

Corn ice cream with corn cream cheese, apricot, corn crumble, sponge cake, and green tangerine cream sauce!! The nuttiness of corn and the tartness of green tangerine went surprisingly well together. Thanks to the green tangerine cream sauce, the finish was refreshing — a perfect way to end the course.

And then the birthday treats came out!! They lit a small candle for it, and it was just so pretty..!
My mom's expression lit up right then, and I think that moment will stay with me longer than the taste of the dessert.

Would I go back?
Every dish in the course was thoughtful and generous, making for such an enjoyable time. If you're looking for a Seoul restaurant for a family meeting or a Seoul Korean restaurant, I'd recommend this one among Gongdeok restaurants.
My return intent is 100%! I think next time I'll come back with my mom for the dinner course. When I think of Gongdeok restaurants going forward, this will be the first that comes to mind.
