Dongtan food alley kimchi jjigae mixed in a yellow pot: Yangpuni
In short
Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal is a Korean rice-and-stew restaurant tucked deep inside the Gaenari Park food alley in Bansong-dong, Dongtan, Hwaseong. Kimchi jjigae for two runs 10,000 won per person and an egg roll is 7,000 won, both ordered from a table tablet; the whole chunks of pork are cut with scissors in the bubbling yellow pot, then the stew is mixed into a bowl of rice with roasted seaweed flakes. The menu is not unusual, but the meat portion is generous and the self-serve side bar is well stocked, making Yangpuni an easy stop when a spicy stew is calling.

Today I visited Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal, tucked into the Gaenari Park food alley in Bansong-dong. It's a Korean restaurant near Dongtan Central Park where they cook up thick, roughly-cut pork in a big, well-worn yellow pot.
An honest review after filling up on a satisfying, no-fuss meal. Let's start with the 3-second summary!

Deep inside the Gaenari Park food alley: what is the restaurant like?
Walking further into the Gaenari Park food alley, you'll spot Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal's friendly, homey sign. Out front, a banner advertising soju at a steep ₩1,900 stands alongside a lunch menu board, so it's easy to notice right away.

Once inside, brick partitions divide the tables at a comfortable distance, giving the space a cozy yet relaxed feel. Each table has a ventilation hood and a tablet for table-side ordering neatly set up, making it a pleasant space whether you're eating solo at lunch or dining in a group.

Kimchi jjigae for two plus an egg roll: how much does it cost?
Ordering is simple via the table tablet. They've got everything from proper Korean stews like kimchi jjigae, kimchi jjim, and duruchigi (spicy stir-fried pork) to evening samgyeopsal grilling. To eat well, we ordered kimchi jjigae (₩10,000) for two and egg rolls (₩7,000) as a side.

As soon as we ordered, the owner set up the gas burner and brought us cold water, a bowl of nutty roasted seaweed flakes perfect for mixing into rice, and the basic side dishes. I liked that everything came neatly served in a hygienic utensil case.

What is on the self-serve side dish bar?
Any extra side dishes or utensils you need are freely available at the self-serve bar in front of the kitchen. There's a surprisingly varied selection — pickled radish, seasoned black beans, ssamjang (dipping sauce), garlic — and every container has a hygienic lid, so it's easy to help yourself to as much as you like.

How was the 7,000-won gyeranmari?
The egg roll (gyeranmari) arrived before the stew even started boiling. It came out thick and fried, lined with ketchup on both sides. Not a flashy or bold flavor, but plain and moist like something made at home — a classic side that paired perfectly with the spicy stew broth.

Whole pork chunks in the yellow-pot kimchi jjigae
Soon after, they set the kimchi jjigae down on the table in a big, old-fashioned yellow pot. It was packed with sliced green onion, big chunks of tofu, and well-fermented kimchi, and as soon as it started bubbling over high heat, the sharp, refreshing kimchi smell hit — and I got hungry, T-T
After the broth came to a boil, I stirred it with a ladle and found big whole chunks of pork inside. When I lifted a piece with tongs, it felt heavy enough that I could tell the meat-to-fat ratio was good. Cutting it into bite-sized pieces with scissors, there was quite a lot — enough for a filling meal.

We piled the well-cooked pork, kimchi, and tofu generously over rice in the big bowl provided, sprinkled on plenty of seaweed flakes, and mixed it all together. The broth was spicy but clean, not heavy, and paired with the chewy pork texture, a whole bowl of rice disappeared in no time — a Korean meal that lived up to its reputation near Dongtan Central Park.
Final verdict and practical tips for visiting Yangpuni
Honest review: It's not a fancy or elaborate flavor, but it's the kind of homey stew place that comes to mind first when you want to polish off a bowl of rice with a spicy, universally likable kimchi jjigae. The generous meat portion and clean self-serve sides made for a satisfying meal.
- Meal pairing tip: If you're visiting with two or more people, I'd recommend the kimchi jjigae with egg roll combo. The egg roll gives a nice kick that balances out the spicy stew!
- Bibimbap tip: Put rice in the large bowl provided, then top it with stew ingredients, seaweed flakes, and a bit of seasoned black beans or pickled radish from the self-serve bar for a much tastier mix.
- Drink discount: With the ₩1,900 soju promotion running, it's an affordable spot to pair a light drink with samgyeopsal or stew in the evening — good for casual gatherings.
