Dongtan Korean restaurant for a rainy-day soy bulgogi side: Yangpuni

In short

Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal is a Korean restaurant specialising in kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and samgyeopsal (pork belly) on Dongtanbansong 3-gil in Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a rainy day when the temperature dropped, the writer came with a child and ordered the kimchi jjigae set for two plus a side of soy-sauce bulgogi, and the side was so generous that the child finished a full bowl of rice. With a spicy stew for the adults and a not-spicy soy bulgogi for the child, Yangpuni made eating out with a kid easy.

On a day when it was drizzling and the temperature had dropped, I found myself craving a hot, spicy bowl of stew. But when you're eating out with a kid, it's always a bit of a gamble to pick a spicy stew place that suits the grown-ups' taste. So I always check ahead for a not-spicy option the kid can actually eat before heading out. This time, my family went to 'Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal,' a Korean restaurant near Dongtan Central Park, and it completely erased that worry.

Inside Yangpuni: the room and the self-serve banchan bar

The moment we walked in, the clean, spacious interior put me at ease right away. The place was clearly well kept.

The self-serve bar was also neatly set up, so it was easy to help ourselves to as much scallion shreds, seasoned radish, and braised black beans as we wanted. The basic banchan (side dishes) tasted great too.

The kimchi jjigae set for two and the surprisingly big soy bulgogi side

We ordered the kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) set for two for the two adults, plus a side of soy bulgogi for our kid.

Since it was just a side dish, I expected a small portion, but I was shocked when I saw the plate on our table 😲😲 — it was way more generous than I'd imagined. Thanks to the appealingly sweet-savory sauce, my kid polished off a whole bowl of rice. It's the perfect dish for kids, so if you're going with your child, I really recommend the soy bulgogi side!

The egg roll that came with the set also exceeded expectations. Rolled up in thick, plump layers, it was savory and soft — more than enough to balance out the spiciness of the stew.

How does kimchi jjigae made with fresh Korean pork taste?

What makes Yangpuni's kimchi jjigae special comes down to a clear principle: they use 100% domestic kimchi and domestic fresh pork that arrives and is used up the same day, and the vegetables felt genuinely fresh too.

Pork and tofu simmering in the kimchi jjigae

With big chunks of pork and tofu simmered in the bowl, the broth was deep and spicy in the best way. The tangy, sharp umami seeping out of the kimchi mingled heavily with the savory richness of the pork fat, and I found myself sighing with satisfaction at every spoonful. The crisp texture of the perfectly fermented, slightly sour kimchi and the tender savoriness of the fresh pork lingered all over my mouth, and before I knew it, a whole bowl of rice was gone 🍚. On that chilly day, the moment I swallowed a spoonful of hot broth, I felt my whole body melt with relief 😌.

Apparently, the kimchi has recently been changed to a Gyeongsang-do-style duruchigi (braised kimchi and meat) preparation, making the flavor even richer, and they now also sell a grilled samgyeopsal (pork belly) menu. That should be a great option for meat lovers too. If dining in isn't convenient, they also deliver, so keep that in mind!

Is Yangpuni a good Dongtan restaurant to visit with a child?

Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal completely won over the whole family and gave us a satisfying meal 😊. Beyond the deep broth flavor packed with fresh domestic pork, the portions were generous enough for two adults to eat their fill. On top of that, having the kid-friendly sweet-savory soy bulgogi and the thick, savory egg roll meant we could relax and enjoy the meal with our child — that was the biggest draw.

If you're looking for a Korean restaurant near Dongtan Central Park with generous portions, deep flavor, and a meal the kids will enjoy too, be sure to stop by 'Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal.'
