Lunch near Ochang Lake Park with a kid: Gorae Budae Jjigae Ochang Main Branch
After stopping by Ochang Lake Library with my kid and then strolling through the lake park, it was suddenly lunchtime.

While looking for a Korean restaurant lunch in Ochang that would work with a 5-year-old, I ended up at Handmade Ham Gorae Budae Jjigae Ochang Main Branch.

Honestly, the name makes it sound like a budae jjigae (army stew) specialist, so I wasn't sure it'd be a good fit with a kid haha. But I'd heard the beef bulgogi here was also good, so this time I went to try the Gorae Daewang Flower Bulgogi.
A 13-minute walk from Ochang Lake Park and Ochang Lake Library
Handmade Ham Gorae Budae Jjigae Ochang Main Branch sits in the Ochang 1st Industrial Complex area, about a 13-minute walk from Ochang Lake Park and Cheongju Ochang Lake Library, making it convenient for lunch on a day you visit both.
On top of that, this is apparently an Ochang institution that's been in the same spot since 2011. Maybe because it's been running so long, I saw quite a few local regulars coming in for lunch.
How big is the Gorae Daewang Flower Bulgogi portion?

The portion of the Gorae Daewang Flower Bulgogi was seriously generous. My first thought when it came out was, 'A flower has bloomed!' haha. The meat was piled up like a mountain, with a flower-shaped handmade ham right in the center — a pretty distinctive look.

The flower-shaped handmade ham had also impressed me the last time I came for budae jjigae, so seeing it on the bulgogi too made me think it might be this place's signature touch, haha.

Grilled on a copper plate, with a texture like Eonyang bulgogi
Unlike regular bulgogi that's soaked in broth from the start, this dish comes on a copper plate with a dished-in center, where you actually grill the meat.
Broth simmers around the edge of the plate along with bean sprouts, mushrooms and scallions. I used to love Seoul-style beef bulgogi and ate it often, but grilling the meat directly like this felt quite different from bulgogi cooked in broth.
The edges of the meat get slightly charred, giving it that crisp texture typical of Eonyang bulgogi, haha. It felt less like eating watered-down meat and more like actually grilling it.
You grill only as much as you're about to eat, and if some looks like it'll sit too long, you can dip it back in the broth at the edge so it doesn't burn.

I ate the meat with vegetables dipped in Gorae's special sauce — it looked like it had quite a bit of chili in it and seemed like it'd be spicy, but it turned out sweeter than expected, so it was fine for me.

The glass noodles cooked in the broth were also nice and soft, and my kid ate them well. In particular, giving her the bean sprouts, glass noodles and mushrooms cooked in the broth along with rice worked out better than I expected, which made this a good spot for a meal with a kid who can't handle spicy food well.
Rice and side dishes from the self-serve bar
The basic side dishes were radish salad and white napa kimchi, and the self-serve bar had extra rice, side dishes and sauce ready to go.
There was also white stir-fried fish cake, which was easy to portion out little by little for my kid.

In particular, ordering a 2-serving bulgogi came with 2 bowls of rice included, matching the number of people. If you want more, you can just grab extra from the self-serve bar! Being a budae jjigae place, the fish cake side dish naturally caught my eye too, haha.

And the bulgogi portion was really generous — even two adults wouldn't feel short on food. I think this would also work well for a lunch with coworkers, or for a group dinner or gathering.

The signature Gorae Jeongtong Flower Budae Jjigae and its handmade ham
For reference, the restaurant's signature dish, Gorae Jeongtong Flower Budae Jjigae, uses handmade ham made in-house — '3-free, 1-low' ham made with no preservatives, no coloring, no starch and low sodium!
These days you can easily find budae jjigae meal kits at unmanned convenience stores in the neighborhood, but after trying this place and reading that description... you might start hesitating to buy just any ham-filled budae jjigae, haha.
And get this — the owner's husband apparently graduated from 'Hummel Meisterschule,' a genuine German handmade-ham school, and is a certified ham craftsman...! Am I really allowed to eat ham this fancy at this price!?
What stood out most when dining with a 5-year-old

Taste matters, of course, but when I'm eating with my kid I also pay a bit more attention to hygiene. There was a Cheongju 'Safe Restaurant' sign at the entrance, which apparently means the place follows practices like using serving spoons, hygienic utensil management and staff wearing masks.

While eating, I actually noticed the basket of utensils giving off warm steam, as if it had just come out of sterilization, and the staff were wearing hats so no hair would fall loose.
The interior was generally clean overall, which I appreciated for dining with a kid. There was a baby chair ready, and at the entrance there were coffee and ice cream vending machines,

and when I told her she could have ice cream once she finished her whole bowl of rice, my little princess really dug into the bean sprouts, mushrooms and meat, haha.
In the end, she even cleared a soft-serve ice cream cone!
Takeout and delivery from Gorae Budae Jjigae Ochang

Near the entrance, I saw budae jjigae and bulgogi prepared for takeout. If I lived in Ochang, I think I'd use takeout or delivery when I wanted to eat this comfortably at home, haha.
Parking at the Ochang Main Branch
If you live in the area, you'll know... the stretch from the Ochang 1st Industrial Complex to the main road by Ochang Lake Park turns into parking hell around mealtimes. Fortunately, there's a dedicated parking lot right behind the restaurant building.

After finishing my meal, I noticed The Sharp Ochang Prestige going up nearby in full swing. It's a 644-unit complex scheduled for move-in in August 2027, so the surrounding area is likely to change quite a bit going forward.
With the lake park and library nearby plus a new apartment complex going up, I found myself briefly thinking it'd be convenient to live around here, haha. Of course, how this area develops further remains to be seen, but it's already a great spot to enjoy both Ochang Lake Park and the library, and it was fun to look around.

A day spent visiting the library with my kid, taking a walk, and finishing up with a hearty lunch. If you're looking for a great beef bulgogi spot, a place to eat with coworkers, or a Korean restaurant lunch in Ochang you can bring a kid to, this place is worth a visit.
