Fresh sliced sashimi to go at Yeongjae Susan, a Songpa fish restaurant
In short
Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi takeout restaurant in Garak Market, Songpa, Seoul. We took home the small seabass, flounder, and red seabream sashimi set for 65,000 won, then made spicy fish stew with the ingredients provided the next day. Verdict: generous, fresh sashimi and an easy next-day meal made this a keeper.

I’d been craving sashimi for ages, so off I went to the Garak Market sashimi center for takeout. I was wondering where to go, then visited Yeongjae Susan (영재수산), a popular Mermaid Priest Pirate Crew shop that received an excellence award in the Songpa sashimi category of the Consumer Industry Evaluation for two consecutive years! 🐟

Yeongjae Susan at Garak Mall: location and parking
Yeongjae Susan, a Garak Market sashimi restaurant, is on the first floor of Garak Mall. Park near pillar E09 on B3 of the Garak Mall South Gate 1 parking lot, take the escalator up to the first floor, and it’s immediately on your right.

Taking out the small Nonggwangcham sashimi set
Yeongjae Susan’s recommended fish ranges from autumn seasonal gizzard shad sashimi to summer seasonal horse mackerel and seabass sashimi. We got the small Nonggwangcham sashimi set, my absolute favorite combination of seabass, flounder, and red seabream. They said it would take about 15 minutes, so we let the baby look at the fish tanks.

Yeongjae Susan at Garak Mall was selling autumn seasonal gizzard shad, shrimp, and blue crab. The tanks were just incredibly clean—you could tell how well they are maintained.

Yeongjae Susan at Garak Market packs everything in an insulated bag as standard. With so many orders, live fish arrive more than three times a day, so the sashimi quality is fresh enough to trust 🐟

Sashimi takeout with spicy fish stew ingredients
I also asked for ingredients for maeuntang (spicy fish stew), and they included not only fish but shellfish, vegetables, and seasoning too! Everything came in an insulated bag, so Yeongjae Susan is a Garak Market sashimi spot I’d recommend even on hot days without worrying about takeout.

Seabass, flounder, and red seabream Nonggwangcham sashimi
Yeongjae Susan’s small Nonggwangcham sashimi set at Garak Market (₩65,000). Seabass, red seabream, and flounder are my favorite white-fleshed fish. They had such an appealing springy texture with no fishiness at all. It comes with cho-gochujang (sweet-tangy chili sauce), soy sauce, ssamjang (savory dipping paste), wasabi, pickled scallions, and pickled ginger.

You can see how fresh Yeongjae Susan’s live-fish sashimi is just from the photos. Since I’m pregnant, freshness matters most when I eat sashimi, and this is a Garak Market sashimi restaurant I can trust because its fish turn over so quickly, arriving three times a day. And although it was the small size, there was enough for four people!

I love that springy texture, so I prefer sashimi cut thick. Yeongjae Susan cuts it nice and thick, making it so chewy, subtly sweet, and fresh—pure sashimi perfection 🖤 It had been such a long time since I last had sashimi, and I enjoyed it so much. My friend who ate with me raved about it too. At the end of the day, fresh sashimi is the best 👍🏻

Next-day brunch: spicy fish stew
For brunch the next day, I cooked the maeuntang. Since they included the vegetables, seasoning, and even shellfish, all I had to do was add water and boil it for a ridiculously delicious stew in no time! I only added red pepper powder, green onion, and Cheongyang chili peppers from home. They were generous with the stew fish too, and there was a good amount of flesh on it. If you love maeuntang, definitely ask for the ingredients and make it at home. From now on, Yeongjae Susan is absolutely my permanent Garak Market sashimi spot 👍🏻
