You know how Garak Market has so many sashimi restaurants and seafood shops, right? Every time I go, I end up wondering where I should buy from. This time, I visited Yeongjae Susan, a well-known seafood spot at Garak Market!

But I was a little surprised as soon as I arrived, haha. There are so many shops around, but this one had noticeably more customers. 👀 I figured there must be a reason people were gathering there, so I took a look right away :)
Yeongjae Susan’s well-maintained tanks
The first thing that caught my eye was the fish tanks.
At a seafood market, you choose live seafood yourself, so I tend to pay close attention to the condition of the tanks. These were kept really clean. The fish looked to be in great shape too, and everything was clean overall—such a good first impression 👍
They also had red snow crab. Wow... it looked seriously delicious too, haha. I held back because I came for sashimi today, but I definitely want to try the red snow crab next time 🦀
Comparing assorted sashimi sizes before ordering
Our choice for the day was assorted sashimi! As we were wondering which size to get, they showed us boards for each size so we could see the actual portions.

This was much more helpful than I expected. When something is only marked small, medium, and large, it can be hard to picture the portion, but being able to compare them visually made ordering so much easier. We ordered the small Nonggwangcham platter for ₩65,000.
The packing did not take long at all, and this was another moment when I thought, “Ah, I can see why this place does so well.” It was the packaging.

The outer packaging was neat and sturdy, and when I opened it, everything inside was arranged so nicely too.

Even with so many customers, I loved that it did not feel like they had packed it carelessly. Everything was prepared neatly, piece by piece.
Satisfied with the thick-cut sashimi and maeuntang ingredients
As soon as we got home, we opened it up! You can tell from the color alone that the sashimi looks good, right? ✨

The slices were nice and thick, so every piece was satisfying to eat, and it was fun choosing among the different kinds. Sashimi is delicious on its own, of course, but I especially love wrapping it in gim (roasted seaweed).

Putting a piece of sashimi on gim made it feel so fancy, and it was really delicious 😋 As I kept eating piece after piece, I slowly understood why Yeongjae Susan had so many customers, haha. I guess there really is a reason crowds gather in certain places.
They did not just pack the sashimi well—they also cleaned and packed the maeuntang (spicy fish stew) ingredients really neatly.

The packaging was honestly some of the neatest I have ever seen—so good. It is unpleasant when seafood occasionally leaks, and it is really not great, but there was none of that here at all.

They even included vegetables, so at home all we had to do was put everything in a pot and let it bubble away! After eating plenty of sashimi, finishing with a spicy maeuntang made it a complete meal.
There are so many seafood shops at Garak Market that it can be difficult to decide where to go. After trying Yeongjae Susan this time, I understood why it is so popular at the Garak Market seafood market. From the tank maintenance and ordering process to the packaging, sashimi quality, and maeuntang ingredients, I was satisfied overall. Most of all, I liked how neat the packaging was despite the number of customers.
I think I will visit again next time I come to Garak Market for takeaway sashimi. And then, I will have to try the red snow crab I had my eye on today too 🦀💛
