Udon and cutlet shared by three near Sinjeongnegeori: Haengbokhan

In short

Haengbokhan Udon Gage Sinjeongnegeori Station Branch is a udon, pork cutlet and rice bowl restaurant right in front of Exit 1 of Sinjeongnegeori Station (Line 2) in Yangcheon, Seoul. Three of us ordered old-school pork cutlet (yetnal donkkaseu), fish cake udon and spicy pork rice bowl and passed the plates around; the cutlet that spread across the whole plate and the clean, refreshing fish cake udon broth stayed with us. Haengbokhan Udon Gage is open until 3am, so it suits lunch just as well as a late-night or morning-after meal around Sinjeongnegeori.

I was near Mokdong and stopped by Haengbokhan Udon Gage Sinjeongnegeori Station Branch.

Since it's called an udon place, I figured it would only serve udon, but the menu had everything from pork cutlet and rice bowls to drinking snacks.

We ordered three things: old-school pork cutlet, fish cake udon, and spicy pork rice bowl. We're genuinely big eaters, but by the end our stomachs were completely full haha. The portions were generous and all three dishes were delicious.

Inside the restaurant and how quickly the food arrives

Interior view with tidy tables

Walking in, I liked that the place was clean. The tables were well kept, and both the owner and staff were super friendly.

The food also came out fast after we ordered. Nothing worse than waiting forever when you're starving, but even with three dishes ordered, everything arrived quickly haha.

I saw a lot of solo diners too. The menu itself — udon, rice bowls, pork cutlet — is easy to eat alone, so it seems like a good option if you're looking for a solo meal spot around Sinjeongnegeori.

On the other hand, there were also plenty of families with kids. High chairs are available, and with familiar dishes like udon, pork cutlet, and rice bowls, it seems easy for everyone in a family to pick something different.

What's on the menu at Haengbokhan Udon Gage?

Menu board listing udon, pork cutlet, and rice bowls

True to its name, Haengbokhan Udon Gage centers on udon, but the menu is more varied than I expected. According to the store signage, they use fresh-cut machine noodles kneaded in-house from clean water, salt, and flour, and the broth is made by steeping clean kelp and bonito flakes.

There are several types of udon, from plain udon to fish cake udon, plus pork cutlet and rice bowls, so I stood in front of the menu board for a while deciding.

We went with the easiest way to cut down on deciding: order everything we wanted haha. We went with old-school pork cutlet, fish cake udon, and spicy pork rice bowl.

Old-school pork cutlet big enough to cover the plate

If you're looking for a pork cutlet worth trying around Sinjeongnegeori, the old-school pork cutlet (yetnal donkkaseu) is worth ordering.

Thinly fried old-school Korean-style pork cutlet

Instead of the thick Japanese-style tonkatsu everyone eats these days, this is exactly what the name says — old-school Korean-style Western cutlet (gyeongyangsik).

Still trying to figure out how to fit this size into a photo haha

It's a thinly fried cutlet topped with sauce, and the size was massive right off the bat.

Thin definitely does not mean small portion haha. It came out big enough to cover the whole plate, and my first reaction was 'oh!'

The familiar old-school pork cutlet flavor — crispy fried cutlet with sauce soaked in nicely. Big and tasty, it was great to share alongside the other dishes.

How the fish cake udon and spicy pork rice bowl taste

The fish cake udon has relatively thin noodles, unlike the thick, chewy Sanuki-style udon.

The broth was refreshing and clean, which I liked. I kept scooping up the fish cakes and drinking the broth — well, honestly drinking is the right word haha — and thought this would be great to come back to after drinking.

The spicy pork rice bowl (jeyuk deopbap) was also tasty.

It had a slight kick and a smoky char flavor that went really well with the rice.

Smoky-flavored pork and rice

The pork cutlet, udon, and pork bowl all tasted completely different, so it was perfect to set them in the middle and take turns bite by bite — a bite of pork mid-udon, a sip of broth mid-cutlet.

We're absolutely big eaters, but the three of us were still stuffed by the end haha. Generous portions, and all three dishes were delicious. I honestly don't know how we ate that much haha.

Good for solo diners and family meals alike

Watching around while we ate, the customer mix was diverse. Plenty of people eating alone with udon or a rice bowl, and plenty of families with kids too.

Seating area with solo diners and families

You can definitely order a bunch of dishes to share like we did, but it also felt like a comfortable spot to come alone for just a bowl of udon or a rice bowl.

Being close to the station is another plus. It's less than a minute from Exit 1 of Sinjeongnegeori Station, so you don't have to walk far when you just want a simple solo meal.

Open until 3am for late-night and morning-after meals in Sinjeongnegeori

What I liked here too was the hours. Open until 3am, seriously?

Menu signage listing snacks and alcoholic drinks

Looking at the menu, I get why they stay open so late. It's not just meal items like udon and pork cutlet — there are drinking snacks and a good variety of alcohol too.

Good for a quick second round late at night while drinking, or if you're craving something spicy or refreshing, finishing off with udon works too. A course of a drink then straight into udon for hangover soup before heading home is entirely possible haha.

Table after finishing the meal

Final verdict on Haengbokhan Udon Gage

We went in for udon and ended up with pork cutlet and a spicy pork rice bowl spread across the whole table, and all three dishes were so good we cleaned every plate. On top of that, the owner and staff were friendly, the place was clean, and the food came out fast, making it an easy place to eat.
