Gongdeok anniversary omakase with red vinegar sushi rice: Danya
In short
Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel is a sushi omakase restaurant on basement level 1 of Seoul Garden Hotel on Mapo-daero in Mapo, Seoul. For an anniversary dinner, the 85,000-won dinner sushi omakase was served at the counter and ran through three appetizers, steamed Wando abalone, ten pieces of sushi pressed with red vinegar rice, and a sea bream rice bowl with cold udon to finish. For a hotel dining room, Danya is clearly one of the best-value omakase courses in Mapo.

A while back I was looking for an omakase near home to go to for our anniversary, and I heard Gongdeok has some famously good-value omakase spots, so I decided to check one out. Honestly, being still a bit of a newbie when it comes to omakase near Gongdeok, most places felt way too expensive for me to even consider — but this one seemed to offer genuinely good value for what you get compared to other Mapo omakase spots, so I made a reservation and went!
But to cut to the chase — I'm genuinely satisfied. So glad I came here!!

The vibe is upscale, and yet the price — ₩80,000ish per person — is actually great value for an omakase. So if you're looking for sushi omakase near Gongdeok or Mapo, keep reading!
Where is Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel, and what are its hours and parking?
Basement level 1 of Seoul Garden Hotel on Mapo-daero
Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel is on the basement level (B1) of Seoul Garden Hotel, 58 Mapo-daero, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Hours are Monday–Saturday 12:00–22:00, with a break time from 15:00–18:00, last order at 21:00, and closed every Sunday.
It's just a few minutes' walk from the station, right on the main road, so it's easy to find.
Hotel parking lot, with valet available
You can use the hotel's own parking garage, so if you're driving there's no need to stress about parking (valet is available too!). Accessibility gets a full pass from me.
Pure luxury: inside the Danya dining room
Head downstairs and there's Danya — oh, the presence radiating from the entrance alone is no joke.
Muted wood tones and soft lighting come together for a calm, luxurious atmosphere. I was already excited going in since it's inside the Garden Hotel, but the vibe was even more upscale than I'd imagined — very satisfying.
You can really feel that it's a restaurant inside a hotel — it has that formal, refined air. It genuinely feels like a proper Japanese restaurant meant for VIPs!!
You can book through Naver Reservation or Catch Table — I booked through Catch Table.

Since I'd made a reservation, they seated us at the best spot at the counter. Thanks to that we got to watch the chef cooking right in front of us — I was so happy, hehe.

The atmosphere is calm and great for conversation, so I think it'd be perfect for a couple's date or a special occasion like ours.

Danya menu and what to order
With omakase there isn't really much to choose, right? Everything's already set in the course, so you just pick which course.

- Lunch sushi omakase ₩58,000 — 3 appetizers, 3 sashimi, abalone, 10 sushi pieces, conger eel tendon, rice dish, dessert
- Dinner sushi omakase ₩85,000 — salad, 3 appetizers, 5 sashimi, abalone, 10 sushi pieces, main dish, conger eel tendon, udon, dessert

- Premium kaiseki ₩120,000 — draft beer, 5 appetizers, abalone, 7 sashimi, 8 sushi pieces, 2 mains, rice dish
- VIP kaiseki ₩150,000

We debated between kaiseki and dinner omakase and went with the dinner omakase! Neither my friend nor I are big drinkers, so we skipped alcohol entirely.

These days dinner omakase often costs well over ₩100,000, so a hotel omakase dinner course at ₩85,000?!! Even before eating, it felt like genuinely good value among Mapo omakase places.
What comes in the 85,000-won dinner sushi omakase

This is the makeup of the dinner course I had at Danya — let me break down the dishes that stood out most.
Three delicate appetizers and steamed Wando abalone
The first three appetizers came plated, and they were so cute looking I couldn't help but photograph them.
We got Japanese-style castella egg roll, tomato confit in wine syrup, and fig topped with yogurt cream cheese. With each bite, tanginess and sweetness burst in perfect harmony.
The tomato confit in wine syrup was sweet and tangy — absolutely perfect for waking up the appetite before the main meal.
And since it's exactly fig season right now, the figs were super sweet, and with the tangy-sweet yogurt on top, it was such a great match!

Next up, the Wando abalone came with a gizzard sauce, and the abalone was boiled so well it was genuinely tender.
Dipping it thick in the rich, savory innard sauce, the flavor of the sea spread through my whole mouth — it was art...

We hadn't even gotten to the main course yet and the appetizers were already this good??
Five seasonal sashimi, all bursting with freshness
After the appetizers and abalone warm us up, out comes five kinds of seasonal sashimi that the chef carefully slices.
Plated beautifully on a clean ceramic plate, the thickness and aging of the fish were exactly right.
With a touch of wasabi dipped in soy sauce, the aging brought out the fish's natural sweetness so well. Each bite had such a chewy texture it almost felt a shame to swallow, hahaha.
Especially the chewy texture of the aged fish clung so nicely in the mouth that I instantly craved a glass of sake or cold draft beer, lol (even after saying earlier I wouldn't drink, haha).
And the presentation was insane too — the chef shaped cucumber into a butterfly and carefully scored the onion, so it looked like a butterfly resting delicately on the aged sashimi. It made for such pretty photos, hehe.

Ten sushi pieces on red vinegar rice, plus the rice courses
And finally, the highlight of this course! The ten-piece sushi section. Watching the chef make each piece right in front of us, on the spot, was fun to watch too.
He whipped them up so smoothly it was fascinating — I didn't know this before booking, but apparently the chef is the first Korean to place second in a Japanese sushi competition!
No wonder the course felt so solid and the sushi quality was insane. And the most important thing — the rice! Since Danya uses red vinegar for the sushi rice, the rice's flavor was clearly a cut above.
The distinct umami and slight acidity of red vinegar rice paired with each topping doubled the umami! I always think that while the fish matters, the rice is the real foundation that determines the quality of sushi... and this rice genuinely surprised me.

The sushi lineup was: flounder, sea bass, red seabream, yellowtail amberjack, flathead grey mullet, flounder fin (engawa), scallop, minced tuna wrapped in gamtae (seaweed), sea urchin, and finished with futomaki (thick sushi roll)!
Flounder sushi
The classic starter of any omakase, right? Clean, chewy, the definition of light and clean flavor.
The subtle tang of the red vinegar rice really elevated the flounder's natural umami — delicious from the first bite.
Sea bass sushi
True to its summer season, it had that distinctive slightly firm bite. The sweetness that builds up with each chew made me even more excited for the next piece °°°
Red sea bream sushi
A savory oiliness rose with every bite!!! The chewy sea bream flesh combined with the rice's umami exploded into a super luxurious flavor.

Red seabream never lets you down, lol.
Amberjack sushi

The distinctive oily richness of summer amberjack wrapped the tongue in the most pleasant way, without being too much.
With that smooth, melting oiliness, I'd recommend adding a bit more wasabi — it brings out even more of the savory flavor, haha.
Flathead grey mullet sushi
That dense, sticky texture the moment it hit my mouth was amazing. Clean yet distinctively springy — the charm of mullet really came through.
Flounder fin (engawa) sushi
Wow... this was genuinely insane. My favorite sashimi is flounder fin, and the crunchy-yet-chewy texture combined with the rich burst of oil that filled my mouth genuinely gave me chills...
The oiliness of the engawa combined with the red vinegar rice, cutting out any greasiness and leaving only savoriness — the best single bite!! Personally my top pick of the whole lineup, hehe.
Scallop sushi
This literally melts like ice cream before you even chew! The surface was lightly torched, adding a bit more richness on top, and combined with the scallop's natural sweetness and thick chewy bite, it was a smile-inducing bite the whole way through.
Negitoro sushi wrapped in gamtae (fine green seaweed)
A perfect combo — behind the crisp, slightly bitter aroma of the gamtae comes the rich, smooth flavor of minced tuna! The seaweed's ocean scent and the tuna's soft savoriness blend beautifully with the rice — so good!
Sea urchin (uni) sushi
Sea urchin is delicious, but even at the best sushi places, it can sometimes have a slightly fishy edge if not handled just right, you know?

But this had zero fishiness, just that rich, creamy sweetness — really delicious.
Futomaki (thick sushi roll) to finish the sushi course

The grand finale of the sushi course — a giant futomaki! Packed generously with ingredients that all come together in the mouth for a huge variety of textures — biting into a big mouthful was such a thrill. Just look at how packed with ingredients it is...
Each piece was made fresh right in front of us at just the right timing — truly touching. With 10 kinds of sushi, there's no way you'd leave still hungry, lol.
Specialty dish: salmon steak
After the sushi, a salmon steak came out — warm, with the salmon flesh melting away beautifully.
Closing course: sea bream rice bowl and cold udon

With the sushi course wrapped up, a light, savory sea bream rice bowl and mild cold udon arrived as the final dish. On top of soft, warm rice sat well-braised sea bream, lightly grilled zucchini and asparagus, all beautifully plated.
The sea bream was so incredibly tender that mashing it lightly with a spoon and mixing it into the rice gave a savory, sweet-salty flavor that spread smoothly through the mouth!!
Nothing about it was overpowering — the seasoning was mild and well-balanced, perfect for warming and settling the stomach after all that sushi.
Served alongside the sea bream rice bowl was cold udon, and wow... the tsuyu broth was genuinely rich. Deep yet clean at the same time — surprisingly so. Is this what they mean by refined flavor, lol.

The noodles in the broth were so springy and chewy, the texture was no joke either. With tenkasu (tempura crumbs), seaweed, and wasabi on top, mixing it all together gave a perfect combo of savoriness and a little kick~
The refreshing finish washed away any leftover oiliness from the fish, making the end of the course thoroughly satisfying!
Fig cheesecake for dessert
For a sweet dessert, seasonal figs came out on top of cheesecake — the figs were super sweet, and the cheesecake was rich and sweet too, a perfect finish to the meal.
By the end I was stuffed to bursting — such a substantial course! You could feel the care put into every single dish; clearly a skilled chef makes all the difference...
Is the Danya dinner omakase worth it in Gongdeok?
- Overwhelming value — despite being located inside a hotel, you get a substantial dinner course for ₩85,000, making it one of the best-value omakase spots in Mapo!
- The special red vinegar rice — unlike regular sushi rice, the red vinegar rice here brings a distinctly deeper flavor and umami
- Upscale, private atmosphere — quiet and private, great for conversation, perfect for anniversaries, dates, or business dinners as a Mapo sushi omakase spot
- Attentive service — the chef and staff's careful, detailed explanations made us feel genuinely well taken care of
Great value, delicious, and fun to watch the chef make sushi right in front of us — Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel!

It definitely feels a cut above in terms of refinement compared to other Mapo omakase spots, making it perfect for an anniversary visit. Being inside a hotel, it's upscale and calm — great for taking your parents or a partner.
For an anniversary, wouldn't it be even better to do a staycation at the Garden Hotel and then have sushi omakase for dinner? We unfortunately did our staycation at a hotel in Yongsan that day, so next time I'll try to visit Danya again during a Garden Hotel staycation! If you're near Gongdeok or Mapo looking for a refined, atmospheric sushi omakase, definitely check out Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel!!
