Sokcho tofu restaurant with Yeoncheon soybean sundubu: Jinsol Halmeoni
In short
Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a third-generation soft tofu restaurant in the Haksapyeong tofu village of Sokcho, where the tofu and sundubu are made with domestic soybeans from Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi-do. Two of us ordered one serving of the plain white Chodang sundubu, seasoned only with salt, and one serving of bulgogi baekban simmered at the table in a pot, then shared both like side dishes. Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu opens daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with no break time, so it suits an early Sokcho breakfast just as well as a late dinner.

Whenever I want a good meal in Sokcho, I often head toward Haksapyeong Kongkkot Village, where a cluster of Sokcho sundubu restaurants sit together. There are so many places serving plain, mild white sundubu stew or hwangtae haejangguk (dried pollack hangover soup) for a clean, simple meal. Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu, which has held its spot in Sokcho's sundubu village for a long time, is one of them.
Where is Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu, and is there parking?
Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is located at 118 Wonamhaksapyeong-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do, in the Haksapyeong sundubu village. It's open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and the private parking lot is free.
Driving toward Sokcho's sundubu village, the view of Ulsanbawi Rock is gorgeous, so it makes for a nice drive too. It's also close to Hanwha Resort Seorak, so it seems to be a spot where Sokcho travelers gather to eat.

The lot in front is spacious and the restaurant itself is large, so it's a popular Sokcho sundubu spot for group visits. The parking lot is big enough for tour buses, so parking was easy.

Three generations of tofu made with Yeoncheon soybeans
Now run by the third generation, Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu makes its tofu with soybeans from Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do. Photos of the founder, the late Ko Jinsol halmeoni, appearing on TV are posted on the wall — the restaurant's name is literally her own name.

The inside is much bigger than it looks from outside. I went in the afternoon, outside mealtime, so it wasn't crowded. With no break time and hours from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., it's a convenient sundubu restaurant to visit for a Sokcho breakfast too.

Whether tofu is made with domestic or imported soybeans makes a big difference in both taste and price. Since both the tofu and sundubu here use domestic Yeoncheon soybeans, you get genuinely tasty tofu.

What is on the menu at Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu?
The sundubu options include plain white Chodang sundubu, spicy sundubu, and a jjamppong-style seafood sundubu loaded with seafood. There's also a tofu hot pot, and the Jinsol set meal comes with sundubu, grilled hwangtae, a block of tofu, buckwheat crepes, and acorn jelly all together — basically a taste of everything. Beyond tofu dishes, there are Gangwon-do regional specialties like grilled hwangtae and squid sundae (stuffed squid).

Every dish can be packed to go, so it seems handy to grab takeout on the way back to your lodging. And handmade tofu for ₩7,000 a block is quite good value.

Chodang sundubu seasoned with nothing but salt
A lot of people love plain, mild tofu, which is why Chodang sundubu is so famous. I'm one of them, so I ordered the plain white Chodang sundubu as our base dish. It's seasoned only with salt, which let me really taste the tofu itself.

The side dishes came out in a good variety, and I could help myself to more from the self-serve corner. Eating the white sundubu with clean side dishes like squid jeotgal (salted squid), stir-fried anchovies, and cucumber kimchi felt easy on the stomach.

Can you order bulgogi baekban for one person?
Since I wanted something that felt like home cooking, the two of us ordered one serving of Chodang sundubu and one serving of bulgogi baekban. Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu lets you order bulgogi baekban as a single serving too, so it worked nicely to share as a side dish alongside the sundubu. Even as a single serving, it's simmered right at the table in a pot, so it's plenty for sharing.

Nobody dislikes sweet, savory bulgogi jeongol (hot pot). This is a place where a group can sit down in Sokcho's sundubu village and eat like it's a home-cooked meal. At other tables I saw people ordering a mix of dishes like grilled hwangtae and squid sundae to share too.

Between the warm bulgogi baekban and all the side dishes, it felt like a proper full meal. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a comfortable meal during a Sokcho trip. Since many restaurants in tourist areas close early, this one staying open every day until 8 p.m. makes it a great Sokcho sundubu spot for dinner or after drinks too.

Is Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu worth a stop in Sokcho?
- It's a Sokcho sundubu restaurant where you can enjoy sundubu, a must-eat food in Sokcho, done really well.
- There's a wide range of menu items, so a group can order a variety and share.
- It opens early in the morning, so it works as a Sokcho breakfast spot too.
