Weeknight family sushi dinner with 10pc salmon nigiri: Sonsi Sushi

In short

Sonsi Sushi Yeungnam University Main Branch is a sushi restaurant near Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. On a weeknight family visit, the writer ordered the value set (10-piece assorted sashimi, udon, chojang sashimi rice bowl, fried shrimp) plus 10 pieces of salmon nigiri, and was won over by small details like the chojang sauce and sesame oil served separately and pickled plums tucked inside the soy sauce container. There was a short wait for a table, but with salmon nigiri the kid loves, it's an easy place to come back to.

If I had to name the most famous sushi restaurant near Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, it would probably be Sonsi Sushi. I'd heard for a while that this place is always packed, and finally got the chance to check it out. Went with the family on a weeknight.

First impression — this place is always busy

The restaurant isn't huge, but it was completely full. We waited a bit for a table since there weren't any free, and only got seated once staff cleared one off. Packed like this on a weeknight — the rumors that this place is always busy weren't exaggerated. There's clearly a reason it's known as one of the best sushi spots near Yeungnam University.

The space has both bar seating and tables. The adjoining tables have partitions set up between them, a nice touch.

Deciding what to order — the value set and salmon nigiri

Menu board at Sonsi Sushi Yeungnam University Main Branch

After some deliberation, we ordered the value set (10-piece assorted sashimi, udon, chojang sashimi rice bowl, fried shrimp) plus 10 pieces of salmon nigiri. Our kid loves salmon nigiri, so that was a must. The salmon nigiri here was great last time too...

The value set's sashimi rice bowl — you can tell they put thought into it

The rice bowl in the value set came topped with generous chunks of salmon sashimi and was loaded with a variety of vegetables. These weren't just roughly chopped and tossed in — the composition felt genuinely thoughtful.

Chojang sauce and sesame oil served separately
Adding chojang sauce and sesame oil to the sashimi rice bowl

Even the chojang (sweet-spicy chili paste) sauce and sesame oil served with the bowl felt carefully considered — they came in their own small dishes. The chojang had a slight sweetness with real depth, and the sesame oil was genuinely nutty. It smelled like the real, freshly pressed kind from a traditional oil mill. Isn't sesame oil the soul of any good bibimbap? A perfect sashimi rice bowl.

Crispy fried shrimp served with the set

And need I even mention the crispy Japanese-style fried shrimp that came alongside? Dip that nutty, crunchy shrimp generously in the sauce and you're instantly happy.

The sushi — solid fundamentals

The sushi here always nails the basics. The rice doesn't clump, breaks apart just right while still holding its shape, and the fish was fresh.

It reaffirmed why people think of Sonsi Sushi when they think sushi in Gyeongsan. And it's not just hype — the Hayang branch is really good too.

Udon included in the value set

The udon that came with the set had a clean, satisfying flavor too. My first Sonsi Sushi visit was actually at the Hayang branch, and that's when I first realized a neighborhood local sushi spot could be this good.

Soy sauce container with a pickled plum inside

Oh, and here's a detail — if you look inside the soy sauce container, there's a pickled plum in there. I'm told it's set there to add a bit of tang to the soy sauce. It's little details like this that I think really round out the whole sushi experience.

Service and atmosphere

The restaurant is small but the turnover is fast, and the staff, while clearly busy, never dropped the ball on service. Tables were cleared quickly too, so the wait never felt long. I've been here a few times now, and it's basically always near full during meal times — a proven favorite, no doubt.

Amenity stand with mouthwash, wet wipes, and more

In one corner of the restaurant there was a stand with mouthwash, candy, hair ties, wet wipes, and hand cream. Since it's right by campus, I appreciated the owner's thoughtfulness in providing mouthwash for students who eat sushi and then have to rush off to class without brushing their teeth. I also grabbed one of the cute little fans with a sushi illustration on it — felt like a fun freebie.

Would I go back?

Sonsi Sushi has somehow become the go-to sushi spot near Yeungnam University for us, and I think we'll keep coming back. The taste is just as good as before, and it seems like new menu items keep getting added. Everyone in the family left satisfied, and with salmon nigiri the kid loves on the menu, this is an easy place to keep coming back to.
