Couple's weeknight Korean set meal with egg self-bar: Cafe Dongi

In short

Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch is a Korean restaurant on the 2nd floor of the main hall at Yeungnam University's Cheonma Art Center in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. A couple visited on a weeknight for the individual-brazier grilled pork jeongsik set, bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap, kimchi jeon, king shrimp tempura, and fried mandu, frying their own eggs at the self-bar to mix in. A tidy, generous spread and the fry-your-own-egg bar made for a comforting end to a tiring weekday.

A tidy Korean restaurant to know in Gyeongsan: Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch.

Weeknight evening visit to Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch in Gyeongsan

On a weeknight, wanting to close out a tiring day properly, my wife and I held hands and headed to Gyeongsan. Craving a proper, tidy Korean meal after a long while, we landed on 'Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch.'

A tidy Korean spot with a café-like atmosphere

Being located inside the Cheonma Art Center made parking easy and access convenient — the kind of place I felt I'd end up visiting often. It already has great word-of-mouth as a go-to spot near both Gyeongsan and Yeungnam University, so we walked in with high expectations.

Wood-toned furniture paired with warm orange lighting creates a cozy, tidy atmosphere.

Modern, clean table seating at Cafe Dongi

The modern yet clean interior makes it a comfortable place to enjoy a carefully prepared set meal. It's easy to talk in the calm ambiance, so it suits both dates and family gatherings.

The essence of Korean food, in a wide range of dishes

Order kiosk on the table at Cafe Dongi

You can order conveniently through the kiosk on the table. There were so many menu items and they all looked delicious, which gave me a bit of decision paralysis.😅

Since the signature here is a carefully prepared set meal, we decided to try a good variety.

  • [Individual Brazier] Grilled Pork Jeongsik Set
  • Bulgogi Yeolmu Bibimbap Set
  • Side — crispy bite-size kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake)
  • Side — king shrimp tempura
  • Side — 50-year-tradition juicy fried mandu (dumplings)

That's how generously we ordered.

Your way, your amount! The self-bar

Self-bar area where customers can fry their own eggs

The self-bar set up on one side of the restaurant added a small fun touch to the meal. Clean, well-kept pans, fresh eggs, and cooking oil were neatly laid out so anyone could fry their own eggs exactly the way they like.

A freshly fried egg made at the self-bar

A freshly fried egg, sunny-side up or over-hard depending on your preference, pairs perfectly with the main dishes. Plopped on top of the spicy-sweet grilled pork or the bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap and mixed in, it adds an even softer, nuttier flavor that raises the whole meal's satisfaction.

There were also some light snacks available for before or after the meal.

At last, the serving robot came rolling over, loaded down with our order. It looked like quite a lot of food for two people.😁

A generous full table spread at Cafe Dongi, plenty for two

Looking at the table full of food, the meal already felt like it had started with the eyes first, thanks to how colorful it all was. The variety of colors and the tidy arrangement made it feel healthy even before the first bite.

[Individual Brazier] Grilled Pork Jeongsik Set

The first thing that caught my eye was the grilled pork, neatly arranged on its own individual brazier. With gentle wisps of steam and the scent of char drifting up, the look alone was intensely appetizing. Glossy red sauce clung to the meat, topped prettily with what looked like radish sprouts, giving it the feel of a proper upscale Korean set meal.

Cleanly plated basic side dishes, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and a neat bowl of rice rounded out a perfectly balanced spread.

One bite in and the smoky char flavor spread dramatically across my whole mouth. There was none of the greasy heaviness pork can sometimes have, and thanks to the individual brazier, the dish stayed warm until the very end, so the meat kept its tender texture throughout.

The meat had just the right thickness for a satisfying chew, and the sweet-yet-spicy sauce had soaked deep into it — a total rice thief.

Wrapping grilled pork in seaweed from the self-bar

Wrapped in seaweed from the self-bar, the balance of savory richness and spiciness hit its peak. A main dish that fully lived up to Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch's reputation for tidy Korean food.

Bulgogi Yeolmu Bibimbap Set

Next up, the bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap set delighted the eyes instantly with its colorful look. A generous pile of crisp-looking green yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) sat in the center of the bowl, with golden, nicely stir-fried bulgogi and a variety of toppings arranged neatly around it.

With the gentle scent of yeolmu drifting up alongside a warm bowl of miyeokguk (seaweed soup), it was the kind of pairing that looked like it could bring back a lost summer appetite just from sight alone.

Cafe Dongi is also one of those places where the rice itself is genuinely delicious. The rice quality, arguably the basic foundation of Korean food, stood out, and if you want more, the self-bar lets you help yourself to as much as you like.

I mixed everything well and took a big spoonful. First came the cool, tangy crunch of the yeolmu kimchi, followed by the savory, tender juiciness of the bulgogi — the classic sweet-and-savory combo.

The refreshing crunch of yeolmu meeting the sweet bulgogi delivered an explosive burst of flavor. Nothing about it was overpowering, and each ingredient's natural flavor came through clearly, leaving my stomach comfortable and my palate refreshed the whole meal. If you're looking for a good place to eat near Cheonma Art Center, I'd definitely recommend this refreshing, tidy bibimbap set.

Crispy bite-size kimchi jeon

Golden, crispy bite-size kimchi jeon served fresh

The kimchi jeon we ordered as a side lived up to its name — nicely golden, bite-sized pieces that were easy to pop right in. The edges, fried until crispy, had an appetizing yellow-and-red look.

The crisp texture was noticeable even just picking it up with chopsticks. One bite gave a satisfying 'crunch' along with the sour, spicy savoriness of well-fermented kimchi. The outside was very crispy while the inside stayed moist and chewy — a textbook example of crispy-outside, tender-inside.

King shrimp tempura

King shrimp tempura in golden batter

The king shrimp tempura we tried next was overwhelming just for its sheer size. The shrimp, coated in golden batter, came out freshly fried with its shape kept perfectly intact from head to tail. You could tell at a glance it had been fried in clean oil, given how bright and smooth the golden coating looked.

One bite gave a crisp shattering sound from the batter, followed by a mouthful of thick, plump shrimp meat. The batter was very thin and crisp with zero greasiness, while the shrimp inside stayed moist — an appealing contrast between the crispy outside and the plump, juicy inside.

50-year-tradition juicy fried mandu

Last, we enjoyed the 50-year-tradition juicy fried mandu (dumplings), their plump shape and deep golden-brown, crispy fried skin immediately appealing.

Letting the hot dumplings cool slightly before biting in, the crisp skin gave way to a rich, savory burst of juice filling the whole mouth. The ratio of minced meat to vegetables inside was spot on, giving a clean yet deep savoriness with every chew.

Wrapping up a weeknight meal

This weeknight dinner with my wife was warmer and more perfect than I expected. Every dish felt tidy and made with care, and the balance of flavor and texture across the main set and various sides kept our conversation going happily throughout the meal.
