Three cream pasta and risotto dishes revisited: Bueokgan Sangmu
In short
Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a pasta and risotto restaurant in Seo-gu, Gwangju's Sangmu district. The writer returned craving remembered flavors and ordered basil pesto cream pasta, carbonara cream pasta, and abalone cream risotto all at once, especially enjoying mixing in the poached eggs. Of the three, the abalone cream risotto was the dish that lingered in memory the most.

Today I want to introduce a place I revisited because I couldn't stop thinking about the food — Bueokgan Sangmu Branch. Going back to a place you've already visited says a lot about how memorable it was. After my first meal at Bueokgan, I told myself I'd come again, and when a craving for good Western food hit, I finally made it back after a while.

A welcome return to Bueokgan Sangmu Branch
Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is located at 25 Seogwangju-ro, 1st floor, Seo-gu, Gwangju. If you're driving, you can use the parking lot set up behind the restaurant, which makes visiting easy. Parking can be a bit of a hassle when eating out in the Sangmu area, so having a dedicated lot was just as convenient on this second visit. The exterior is clean but still carries that distinct restaurant atmosphere. The details I found pretty on my first visit still held up. Even though it had been a while, nothing felt unfamiliar, and the memories of my earlier visit came right back, which made me weirdly happy. It's a spot that works well as a date destination and is also comfortable enough for a family meal, so I think it suits a lot of different occasions.

An interior that still feels comfortable on a second visit
Walking inside brought back a faint memory of sitting down to eat here before. The interior is clean and warm overall, so it doesn't feel stuffy even if you stay a while. The tables are spaced generously enough that you don't feel crowded by your neighbors, and the soft lighting seemed to create a relaxed dining mood during the day, while probably giving off a more atmospheric restaurant feel at night. Again I saw families and couples dining, so it really does seem like a space that suits all kinds of gatherings. Maybe because I'd been here before, I was able to enjoy the atmosphere more leisurely this time.

The tableware at the seats was set up cleanly, and a friendly staff member brought water and pickles once we sat down.
Three cream dishes picked from the menu
There's a variety of menu options for different tastes, and honestly on a revisit you'd think about trying something new, right? But looking at the menu that day, I ended up going back to the dish I remembered loving, plus cream pasta.
What I ordered was one basil pesto cream pasta, one carbonara cream pasta, and one abalone cream risotto.

When the dishes arrived, the presentation was outstanding, truly living up to a Western food specialty restaurant.

Basil pesto cream pasta
I started with the wonderfully fragrant basil pesto cream pasta. This dish stuck in my memory from my first visit, and eating it again, I understood why I picked it once more. The cream sauce coated the noodles smoothly, and the subtle basil aroma filled the whole bite.

If you pop the poached egg in the middle and mix it into the pasta, the sauce becomes even smoother. The yolk blends naturally into the cream sauce, mellowing the overall consistency and adding a nutty richness. Personally, I'd recommend fully mixing in the poached egg rather than eating it separately for this pasta. When the basil fragrance, the creaminess, and the yolk's nuttiness all combine, the flavor feels much richer.
Pairing it with the arugula on the side adds a slightly bitter note that cleans up the palate, so even people worried about cream pasta being too heavy could probably eat this comfortably. It was just as satisfying on this revisit, so it's a dish I'd order without hesitation the next time I come back.

Carbonara cream pasta
The carbonara cream pasta came topped with a poached egg, and mixing the egg into the noodles made the flavor thick, nutty, and rich in a really delicious way. The pasta itself was well infused with a savory cream taste too — it was great.

The bacon and mushrooms were both cut into generous pieces, so the texture and flavor were great enough that I found myself thinking I'd definitely order this cream pasta again on my next visit.

Abalone cream risotto
And one of the dishes I really wanted to eat again on this visit was the abalone cream risotto. I like risotto in general, so it left an impression the first time too, and it was just as good this time. The cream sauce seeped smoothly between the grains of rice, giving the whole dish a moist, rich feel.

With the abalone mixed in, there was a subtle ocean fragrance and umami, and biting into it gave that signature chewy abalone texture, which was fun. The cream sauce wasn't flat at all — it had depth, so after one spoonful you naturally reached for the next. Risotto especially seems to blend more with the sauce as time passes, so the texture felt slightly different between the first bite and the middle of the bowl.

(A risotto that tastes amazing no matter when you eat it.) Eating it with the fried mushrooms on top made the texture even richer. Personally, of the three dishes I had that day, the abalone cream risotto was the one that stuck with me the most afterward. Coming back and eating something I loved the first time and still feeling just as satisfied was oddly rewarding. I guess a truly delicious dish really does stay memorable over time.
What I felt coming back
Revisiting this time made me realize that a genuinely good restaurant isn't a one-time thing. The first visit is out of curiosity, but from the second visit on, you go back because you already know exactly what you want to eat. Bueokgan Sangmu Branch was that kind of place for me. The atmosphere being nice was part of why I came back, but the bigger reason was simply craving the dishes I remembered from before.
In particular, the basil pesto cream pasta and the abalone cream risotto each had their own distinct charm, and they paired well together even though they're both cream-based. One is centered on the harmony of basil and cream, while the other is built around the umami of abalone and a rich cream flavor — clearly different despite being in the same category.

Looking for a good-atmosphere restaurant in Sangmu?
When looking for a date spot or a family dinner place in Sangmu, atmosphere matters just as much as taste. Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a solid, easy choice on that front. The space is clean and comfortable, so it's good not just for special occasions but also for any day you simply crave good Western food. It's a great pick for anyone who likes pasta or risotto. There will probably be people like me who visit once, find it good, and come back. On this revisit, I ordered the exact dishes I loved before, and they were just as satisfying.
If you're craving pasta in the Sangmu area, want a relaxed meal in a nice-atmosphere restaurant, or are looking for a comfortable place to eat with family or a partner, I'd recommend revisiting Bueokgan Sangmu Branch like I did. Next time I'll try to challenge myself with something new on the menu, though I have a feeling I'll end up ordering the same dishes again anyway. Isn't a place you keep thinking about after one visit basically the definition of a true favorite restaurant? I had another great meal at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch, and I recommend it to anyone in the Sangmu area who wants both good atmosphere and good taste. ♡
