Korean BBQ in Daegu's Anjirang Gopchang Alley: staff-grilled makchang

In short

Anjirang Gopchang Makchang Apsan Branch is a makchang (grilled pork intestine) and gopchang (small intestine) restaurant in Anjirang Gopchang Alley in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu. The order was makchang, seasoned gopchang, heart and rice balls, and a staff member grilled the seasoned and unseasoned meat separately on two grill pans, so everything came out nutty and free of any gamey smell. With parking in front of the restaurant and the Anjirang Gopchang No. 2 public lot nearby, Anjirang Gopchang Makchang Apsan Branch is easy for travellers driving around Daegu.

Today I'm sharing a review from a recent trip to Daegu :) Daegu really has so much good food, and gopchang and makchang are definitely part of that! There's literally a whole street dedicated to it — Anjirang Gopchang Alley — packed with great places, and today I'm writing about Anjirang Gopchang Makchang Apsan Branch in Daemyeong-dong.

Where to park in Daegu's Anjirang Gopchang Alley

Anjirang Gopchang Makchang Apsan Branch has parking right in front of the store. Let me give you the parking info for Anjirang Gopchang Alley first :) If you're driving, you can park in the alley in front of the restaurant, and if that's not possible, there's an Anjirang Gopchang public parking lot nearby.

Anjirang Gopchang Alley has both a No. 1 and a No. 2 public parking lot — the restaurant we visited today was a bit closer to the No. 2 lot, so that's where we parked. The parking fee was cheap too, so it was easy to park without worrying about cost.

HACCP-certified facility and the open kitchen

Makchang is a hugely popular menu item in Daegu, and Anjirang Gopchang Makchang stands out with its own HACCP-certified facility, so you can eat there with confidence. I also heard it was the first in Anjirang Gopchang Alley to introduce an open kitchen system with an ultrasonic cleaner, making it one of the most hygienic kitchen setups around!

Inside the restaurant and the coat closet

The interior is bigger than expected, which makes it a good spot for group meals in Anjirang Gopchang Alley.

There's also a closet inside where you can neatly store your coat and belongings during the meal. Coats often end up smelling like gopchang after a meal like this, so having a closet to stash them in felt like a small but really thoughtful touch :D

What's on the self-serve side dish bar

There's a self-serve bar with sauces and side dishes — house-made pickles like myeongi namul (wild garlic leaves), gungchae pickle, chayote pickle, and mustard leaf pickle, plus garlic and onion that are great grilled alongside the meat! It was a perfect setup for mixing and matching to your taste :D

Tasting the makchang, seasoned gopchang and heart

Anjirang Gopchang Makchang Apsan Branch has a wide range of gopchang and makchang menus along with side dishes. We ordered the signature makchang along with seasoned gopchang, heart, and rice balls :D There are also various set menus, so it looked easy to order according to your taste :)

The makchang came out first :) It was great that the staff explained each item and grilled it for us. True to its reputation as a makchang specialist, it had absolutely no gamey smell and was wonderfully savory!

Then came the seasoned gopchang and grilled heart! The seasoned gopchang is apparently premium gopchang pre-cooked over charcoal by hand before serving :D The savory gopchang paired perfectly with the mildly spicy-sweet seasoning. The grilled heart we also ordered was a nice change of pace from the gopchang and makchang, and something of a delicacy. My companion Bini loves grilled heart, so she was especially into it :D

Two grill pans: seasoned and unseasoned meat cooked apart

Anjirang Gopchang Makchang uses two grills to cook the seasoned meat and the unseasoned meat separately. That made it so much better for enjoying each item's true flavor :D Everything looked amazing even before eating, and separating them really let each distinct flavor come through — it made the whole meal even more delicious!

It was also great that the staff kept watching over the grill and cooking for us so we could enjoy it at its best :D Thanks to that, we got to enjoy the gopchang even more. It really lived up to its reputation as one of the must-visit restaurants of Anjirang Gopchang Alley — we ate so well at Anjirang Gopchang Makchang Apsan Branch!

Mixing and matching the sauces and side dishes from the self-serve bar made everything even tastier. In particular, the combination of the various pickled side dishes with the mayo-teriyaki sauce was my personal favorite haha.

After the meal, the owner even gave us cooling patches on our way out haha. Realizing we were travelers, they handed them over saying to have a cool trip — it was such a thoughtful gesture that we were really grateful for.
