My wife had a rare day off, so once we dropped our kid at daycare I wanted a relaxed meal together. On a day like this, staying home just didn't feel right — I wanted us to have real time just the two of us. So we decided to take our time over lunch somewhere with a bit of atmosphere. That's how we ended up at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch.

Good food matters, sure, but that day I mainly wanted a comfortable place to talk. Once we actually got there, the atmosphere turned out to be even better than I'd expected.

Even before the food arrived, the place had already won us over just with its look.

The moment we stepped inside, my wife and I both stopped to take a good look around.

It felt distinctly different from the restaurants we usually visit with our kid — almost unfamiliar.

Overall the mood was strongly antique, with an exotic feel like a restaurant somewhere in Europe.

Vintage furniture and props were scattered throughout the space,

so it felt less like a restaurant and more like stepping into an old European hotel. The lighting wasn't too bright and the whole place felt calm, which made it easy to talk over a meal, just the two of us.

Every table seemed to have its own slightly different mood, so I imagine the experience would shift depending on where you sit.

Is Bueokgan Sangmu Branch better for dates, families or group meals?

There were quiet spots that seemed perfect for two people talking softly, and also seating for larger groups, so it struck me as a place that would work for dates as well as gatherings. Looking around while we ate, there were couples like us, but also family tables and groups of friends dining together. I'd come in thinking of it as a couple's date spot, but once inside I realized it suits families and gatherings just as well.

More than anything, since we'd just dropped our kid off at daycare, simply sitting across from my wife and chatting at ease felt really good. Normally, between looking after our child and our own tasks, we don't get much time to sit fully face to face like that. Maybe that's why I already felt good even before the food arrived.

The three dishes we ordered for two

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a pasta spot in Sangmu with a wide range of Western dishes, from pasta to risotto. There were so many things we wanted to try that we lingered over the menu for a while before settling on three. We started with something light — napa cabbage caesar salad — and for the mains chose abalone cream risotto and shrimp rosé pasta (their signature menu!!).

One salad and two mains to share turned out to be a good combination for two people. In particular, we picked a risotto and a pasta with different sauce styles so we wouldn't be stuck with just one flavor the whole meal.

After ordering, we wandered the space a bit more. The atmosphere was so distinctive that just looking around before the food arrived was entertaining on its own. That's probably why the whole meal felt more leisurely that day.

Napa cabbage caesar salad

The napa cabbage caesar salad came out first.

I usually think of salad as something light to eat before a meal, but this one looked better than expected right from the start. The napa cabbage kept its crunch, so with the dressing it didn't end up tasting purely soft. My wife said it was good after just one bite. For me, eating it as a kind of palate-cleanser before the mains felt just right — not heavy at all.

Abalone cream risotto

Next came the abalone cream risotto. Cream risotto can sometimes taste same-ish the whole way through, but the abalone gave it more depth.

Scooping up the risotto with the abalone, the smooth cream paired well with the abalone's chew. The rice wasn't overcooked into mush either — it kept just enough bite to make eating it fun. It went well alongside the other dish too, so naturally we ended up alternating — a bite of pasta, a bite of risotto.

Shrimp rosé pasta

Last was the shrimp rosé pasta — personally, the dish I reached for most out of everything we ordered that day. The shrimp in the soft rosé sauce made the combination of sauce and noodles feel quite rich. And having shrimp in there added extra texture compared to plain pasta.

Twirling the noodles well-coated in sauce together with the shrimp, I could taste both the cream's smoothness and a light tomato-based freshness. Starting light with the salad, easing into the softness of the risotto, then finishing with the pasta made for a natural flow to the meal.

More than anything, I was glad we hadn't just come for the food, but got to slowly spend time together after a while. The staff also checked in on us comfortably throughout the meal, so there was nothing to feel awkward about.

Was Bueokgan Sangmu Branch worth the weekday trip?

This visit to a Gwangju Sangmu district restaurant stuck with me more for the atmosphere than the food itself.

I wanted a slightly leisurely meal, and this place fit that purpose well. With its antique, European feel, it would suit a day when you want a meal that feels a bit different from usual. I think it's a Sangmu district restaurant in Gwangju that works well for families, couples, and groups alike.

Just like this day, with no special plans at all, sitting somewhere with good atmosphere and simply talking to each other over a meal was enough of a mood-lift.
