Today was lunch day with my dad. He really loves galchi jorim (braised hairtail), so we decided to eat it together — and I happened to find Galchi Hanpan (갈치한판), a famous restaurant in the Sangmu district of Gwangju.

Location and parking at Galchi Hanpan

It's right next to the corner of the Sangmu specialty food street, across from Central Tourist Hotel, so it wasn't hard to find at all. We parked in the alley in front of the restaurant.

As the name suggests, Galchi Hanpan specializes in braised and grilled hairtail as a seasonal dish, and honestly it's really good. It's famous as a place where you can enjoy great-value galchi jorim with a whole spread of side dishes if you visit for lunch.

Lunch special: 15,000 won per person — worth it?

Visiting for lunch means you can eat for 15,000 won a person, which felt really reasonable. Compared to the dinner menu prices, the lunch special is much easier on the wallet, so that's what we ordered. With value like this, it's a place I'd want to come back to often.

They use hairtail from Mokpo, which already builds trust in the ingredients, and inside the restaurant you can see the K-FISH (domestic seafood) certification displayed. The dining room is spacious too, good for group meals — and plenty of people were already there for lunch.

What were the side dishes like?

There was a wide variety: mustard leaf kimchi, seasoned sweet potato stem, sautéed mushrooms, pan-fried tofu, stir-fried fish cake, cabbage wraps and more. With this much variety before the rice even arrives, picking through them was already a lot of fun — totally satisfying.

Honestly, these days you don't often get to eat such a range of side dishes — but at Galchi Hanpan, this restaurant in Sangmu, you could finish a whole bowl of rice on the side dishes alone before the main galchi jorim even arrives. I couldn't stop reaching for more.

Especially wrapping rice with seasoning in a cabbage leaf — healthy but so addictive. The side dishes felt homemade, like eating someone's carefully prepared home cooking. They're mostly vegetable-based too, so it's easy to eat without feeling heavy — that's what kept me reaching for more. Nothing was too strong-flavored; the seasoning let the ingredients' own taste come through without being too salty. Just the right side dishes.

How was the main galchi jorim?

The main dish, galchi jorim, arrives already cooked — you just simmer it a little more before eating. Being ready to eat right away was really convenient.

Spicy galchi jorim braised down thick with daikon

The sauce was spicy yet full of savory depth, braised down with the daikon in a thick, reduced broth — total rice thief. It paired perfectly with the mustard leaf kimchi too. The daikon wasn't hard at all, well-braised through, and the portion was generous, so we ate as much as we wanted.

Sweet potato stems layered beneath the galchi jorim

There were sweet potato stems laid underneath too, and that was a treat in itself. The spicy, delicious broth had soaked right through, so I couldn't stop eating it with rice. Other galchi jorim places don't usually include sweet potato stems, but I remember my parents' home-cooked version always had them — so it felt especially familiar, and that made it taste even better.

The hairtail itself was tender and delicious on its own. Being Mokpo hairtail, the bones came off easily and there was plenty of flesh — I really felt like I'd made the right choice.

A thick, meaty cut of braised Mokpo hairtail

It's delicious plain, but flaking off the hairtail and piling it on rice makes the soft flesh and rice go so well together — a proper, filling meal. The older I get, the more I believe Koreans really do run on rice, and this galchi jorim is exactly the kind of lunch for that.

The hairtail alone is great, but you know mashing the potato and daikon into the rice and mixing it all together is next-level, right?

Good for family gatherings or work dinners too?

Partway through, my dad was enjoying it so much he ended up ordering a second bowl of rice — that's how good it was. We both scraped our bowls clean, a completely satisfying lunch. It's only 908 meters from Exit 6 of Sangmu Station, so you can walk there even without a car, and since the dining room is spacious, group visits and reservations are possible too — making it a good spot for family gatherings or work dinners.

It had been a while since I'd had galchi jorim with my dad, and seeing him enjoy it so much made me happy. Next time I'm in Gwangju, I plan to come back to Galchi Hanpan, this restaurant in Sangmu, to eat galchi jorim with him again — it's genuinely that good. If you're looking for somewhere to eat in Sangmu, don't overthink it — head to Galchi Hanpan and try the great-value galchi jorim lunch special.
