I visited Halls Gimbap Main Branch, a well-known gimbap (seaweed rice roll) spot near Gyodae. These days I've been packing lunch for work, so I picked up gimbap near Gyodae Station to double as lunchbox and dinner for the next day. Halls Gimbap is clearly popular with office workers — true to its name, there's a giant horse painted on the sign. It's open weekdays from 9:30am to 8pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm. With so many workplaces around Gyodae, it seems they open early and stay open late on weekdays.

Here's the menu board at Halls Gimbap in Gyodae. You can order via kiosk or directly with the owner. Gimbap comes as single rolls or sets, and there's a really wide variety. The green onion and konjac-minari (water dropwort) rolls especially caught my eye — menu items you don't see elsewhere. I ordered the Spam + Fried Chicken set, wasabi gimbap, and one drink.

You can eat in or take out, and they also have bonito broth and ramyeon (instant noodles), so there's plenty to enjoy! While waiting for my takeout, I had the bonito broth — nice and spicy-savory. I was tempted by gimbap-and-ramyeon, since that combo is always right, but I held back.

Looking around the interior while waiting. True to its name, Halls Gimbap has cute little horses everywhere, haha. The interior really commits to the name.

Takeout stickers, self-serve drinks and what comes in the set

My order came out. Since I asked for takeout, they included chopsticks too. Drinks work on a self-serve system — you just grab one from the fridge after ordering. I went with a Coke.

They put stickers on the front of each bag by type, so you don't mix them up — a nice thoughtful touch!

Ta-da — the Spam + Fried Chicken set and wasabi gimbap. There were so many gimbap types I agonized over choosing, but I'd already picked these before arriving — and it was the right call!

Gimbap and fried chicken is always a winning combo. Getting it as a set makes it good value and convenient — everything from one restaurant.

Halls Gimbap uses black rice, with a whole strip of Spam inside, and the egg, cucumber, and pickled radish are packed in tightly.

Dakgangjeong: crisp outside, juicy inside

Crispy outside, juicy inside fried chicken. Gimbap aside, the fried chicken at Halls Gimbap is genuinely delicious — certified fried chicken favorite! It's cooked to order so it arrives hot, generously packed with meat, and filling. The crispy, sweet sauce combo is excellent!

Wasabi gimbap to cut the richness

Wasabi gimbap. Spam gimbap and fried chicken can get rich, but the wasabi's kick cuts right through it.

The Spam gimbap has a whole strip of Spam, which could make it salty, but the generous cucumber balances the seasoning perfectly.

You can't see the wasabi in the wasabi gimbap, but it's lightly spread inside, so it's less spicy and more of a nose-tingling sensation. A real specialty! Ordering two kinds of gimbap let me mix and match halves, which kept things from getting boring.

Half eaten in the shop, half packed for next-day lunch

I ate half at Halls Gimbap and took the rest to go! I packed the leftover gimbap for lunch the next day. I had a satisfying meal of gimbap and fried chicken at Halls Gimbap's Gyodae branch, a well-known Gyodae gimbap spot — eating it fresh right after it was cooked made it especially delicious. There were tons of walk-in customers, plus a steady stream of delivery orders coming in — proof of its Gyodae favorite status!
