Yeolmu bibimbap set with self-fry egg station, Daegu: Cafe Dongi

My friend and I hadn't met in a while, so we planned a late lunch together — and that day I was really craving a clean, proper Korean set meal! So I headed to Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch, a Korean set-meal spot I'd found while looking for good eats in Daemyeong-dong.

Cafe Dongi has long had a reputation for good value and good taste, so I'd wanted to try it for a while — and looking at the menu prices, I was honestly shocked they could still charge this little given today's prices, haha.

Location and parking

If you're looking for Korean food near Daemyeong Station, this is a pretty convenient spot. Best of all, there's parking available, which matters a lot for us since we drive everywhere haha. Even during a late lunch rush, we were able to eat comfortably.

Inside the store and the self-bar

The interior was overall clean and comfortable. The table layout works well — there are spots great for a group and spots that don't feel awkward if you're dining alone — so it looked good for solo diners as well as families or friend groups.

And here's what I liked most about Cafe Dongi — the self-bar! You can literally... fry your own egg here haha. I'm someone who loves topping a Korean set meal with a perfect soft-fried egg, so I couldn't resist this>< Being able to cook it exactly how you like was such a nice touch.

What's at the service bar

At the service bar, there's extra rice ready for anyone who needs more, plus seaweed and heokgae tea (hovenia dulcis tea) that you can help yourself to as needed. No worries even if you bring someone with a big appetite, haha.

They even had barley candy set out for easy after-meal snacking, so dessert was covered too.

But here's what I thought was genuinely clever — when you're frying your own egg, your hands can get oily or messy, right? They actually had a separate sink set up so you could wash up right away. It seems like a small thing, but details like this make the whole place feel so much more thoughtfully run. Personally, this kind of detail really boosted my satisfaction!

Menu and prices

True to its reputation as a great Korean set-meal spot in Daemyeong-dong, there was a wide variety of set options, which made choosing kind of hard. We ordered the summer special yeolmu bibimbap set, the Dongi nuruk-aged tangsuyuk (small), and the jjukkumi stir-fry set!

The yeolmu bibimbap set is a seasonal menu, and given how much a single meal out costs these days, the ₩7,900 price tag immediately caught my eye. And the Dongi nuruk-aged tangsuyuk apparently uses pork aged with traditional rice nuruk (fermented rice malt), fried without flour — a bit different from the tangsuyuk you'd get at your typical Chinese restaurant! The jjukkumi stir-fry set was said to be based on a recipe from someone's grandmother in the countryside, which also had me curious haha.

And since writing a review gets you free lemonade, we made sure to claim that too haha.

Tasting the jjukkumi, yeolmu bibimbap, and tangsuyuk

My friend's jjukkumi stir-fry set! The bright red stir-fried octopus alone looked amazing, and it was the perfect Korean dish to eat with rice. Jjukkumi stir-fry is good on its own, but it really shines when you pile on some rice and other sides for a big bite haha. And since you can grab extra rice from the service bar, you could eat as much as you wanted.

The yeolmu bibimbap was perfect for summer! Mixing the crisp yeolmu (young radish greens) with all the toppings made for a meal that felt light but still satisfying. With the soup, side dishes, seaweed, and a fried egg on top, it was a surprisingly generous spread for a ₩7,900 set. Isn't this exactly the kind of meal you crave when you want home cooking><

And the nuruk-aged tangsuyuk had way more presence than I expected! Crispy on the outside with meat packed inside, dipped in the lemon-accented sauce — it felt like a real treat among the Korean set dishes. We each got our own set plus added the tangsuyuk on top... and the portion was seriously huge haha. But since it was too good to leave behind, we cleaned our plates to the very end haha.

Final thoughts

Meeting up with a friend after a while, we wanted something comforting rather than fancy, which is how we ended up at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch. It was way more satisfying than expected! For starters, the set meals themselves offered great value, and with enough menu options, we could each pick our own set and share an extra side.

What I especially loved was the self-bar and service bar setup! You can fry your own egg, grab more rice if you're still hungry, and there's seaweed, heokgae tea, and barley candy for after — honestly, this place seems dead set on making sure you leave full haha. Having a sink to wash up right after frying an egg was a small but genuinely clever touch.

Being able to enjoy a full set meal with all the sides, without spending much, makes this a great pick for anyone hunting for Korean set-meal spots in Daemyeong-dong. It looked comfortable for solo dining, and with well-arranged tables, it also seemed great for family or group visits.
