Anseong Gongdo café for chestnut milk bread and shaved ice: Chat Baker

In short

Chat Baker is a 500-pyeong (about 1,650㎡) bakery café in Gongdo-eup, Anseong, Gyeonggi. On the way back from Anseong Farm Land, the writer stopped in with a 29-month-old for Gongju chestnut milk bread (공주 밤식빵), snow-flake red bean bingsu (shaved ice) and two iced americanos, and found the second-floor floor seating and the huge parking lot especially easy with a toddler. Chat Baker suits families who want a classic red bean bingsu, though there is no diaper changing table.

We stopped by Chat Baker, a large bakery café, on the way home from Anseong Farm Land, and it was hugely satisfying.

Chat Baker is an aesthetic bakery café spanning about 500 pyeong in Gongdo, Anseong. Anseong Farm Land is close by, so it was the perfect stop for us on the way back from a Farm Land visit!

There's a large parking lot right beside the store, plus a parking attendant, so you don't need to worry about parking at all.

Chat Baker's second-floor floor seating with a 29-month-old

The 2nd floor of Chat Baker has floor seating you can sit on with young children, which made it comfortable with our 29-month-old. There's no diaper changing table, though.

The interior was so clean, aesthetic, and stylish it surprised me... they even set up a window with water streaming down it like rain, which looked amazing. It was a sunny, very hot day, but just looking at that water-curtain window felt cooling.

The 2nd floor also has floor seating you can use with young kids, which was my favorite part of this place. The full glass windows keep the interior bright too — just sitting there felt healing.

They say it's the largest aesthetic café in Gongdo, Anseong, and honestly I don't think there's another café in Anseong this pleasant, with such good music and such a healing vibe. I'd love to bring my niece, who's still a baby, here next time.

Chat Baker's bread lineup, the salt bread tasting and the Balmuda oven

Chat Baker serves handmade bread baked fresh every morning. It first became known for its salt bread, but the anbutter (sweet red bean butter bread), croissants, cube toast, princess chestnut bread, scones, and baguettes all looked incredibly good too. Even though I was already full, my dessert-bread stomach was a whole other story. What to pick for dessert 😋

Handmade cake showcase at Chat Baker

The handmade cakes looked really good too. I debated between cake-and-bread or bingsu, and in the end decided to get both bread and bingsu — this place is also famous for its bingsu after all...

Bingsu menu board at Chat Baker

The bingsu menu includes fresh mango coconut bingsu, melon snow-flake bingsu, watermelon snow-flake bingsu, snow-flake red bean bingsu (classic), and matcha choco bingsu — I went with the snow-flake red bean bingsu! You can also swap the milk ice for matcha ice.

Salt bread received through the review event at Chat Baker

Since they're known for salt bread, after registering for the Naver review event they gave us a piece of salt bread. They also run tastings of it here, and it was crisp outside, soft and cavernous inside, and delicious 😋

Balmuda oven corner for warming bread

And there's a Balmuda oven you can use to warm up your own bread. Warm bread is always the right answer ღ'ᴗ'ღ

Princess chestnut bread with two iced americanos

Gongju chestnut milk bread and iced americano at Chat Baker

That day we ordered 2 iced americanos, princess chestnut bread, and snow-flake red bean bingsu at Chat Baker. We decided to get the bread and drinks first.

Iced americano marked as decaf

They clearly marked the decaf option separately.

Cross-section of princess chestnut bread packed with chestnuts

There's plenty of sweet chestnut packed inside, and the top of the bread has a streusel-like texture, so it was sweet and really tasty. It was a well-judged bread choice for both a kid and an adult to enjoy, and the coffee had just the right amount of acidity — top marks 👍

How big is Chat Baker's snow-flake red bean bingsu, and how does it taste?

Chat Baker's snow-flake red bean bingsu is enough for 3-4 people. It's piled up like a mountain of milk snow-flake ice in a genuinely huge bowl, topped generously with whole red beans plus soft rice cake and 2 pieces of chewy mochi — the portion is really massive!!! Perfect snow-flake red bean bingsu for a hot day ❄️

Red beans dripping down. Fruit bingsu is good too, but the classic red bean bingsu really is the best...

Red beans dripping down the snow-flake ice

The red beans were mildly sweet with a nutty flavor, and while eating them alone was sweet, mixing them with the milky snow-flake ice toned down the sweetness a bit, so I kept eating. The sliced almonds mixed in added a nutty, crunchy texture on top of that, which I liked.

And of course, rice cake — no red bean bingsu without it! Chewy rice cake bites here and there contrasted nicely with the soft ice. Personally I think a good red bean bingsu needs the red beans, rice cake, and ice all working together properly, and this one nailed that basic combination cleanly.

Granola layered at the bottom of the bingsu

And there was a generous layer of granola at the bottom, so much that I could keep scooping big spoonfuls without worrying about running out, which made it filling too ღ'ᴗ'ღ It was close to a clean, unfussy, classic red bean bingsu. So rather than flashy toppings or unusual flavors, this one will suit people who love a classic red bean bingsu best!

Is Chat Baker worth it as a family café near Anseong Farm Land and Starfield?

Above all, Chat Baker has such a wide variety of bread and such a spacious café layout that it was great for having bingsu as dessert alongside bread or drinks. If you're looking for a café to visit as a family near Anseong Farm Land or Starfield Anseong, I highly recommend giving this place a try!!
