Gyeongju apple pie gift set: Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

In short

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a small takeout-focused handmade pie shop just off the main Hwangridan-gil alley in Gyeongju. I bought a ₩26,500 six-piece apple pie gift set for our accommodation and as a travel souvenir; the flaky pastry and large crisp apple pieces stood out, though some flavors had sold out after lunch.

While walking around Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae during our Gyeongju trip, I stopped by Gyeongju Tokyo Pie (경주도쿄파이) for a snack. It is a handmade pie shop where a Japanese pastry chef bakes pies with apple pieces, and this time I chose an apple pie gift set as a snack for our accommodation and a travel souvenir.

Where is this Hwangridan-gil pie shop, and when is it open?

The address is Unit 106, 1st floor, 38 Poseok-ro 1095beon-gil, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, South Korea. The original post lists hours from 11:30 AM to 7 PM, until 8 PM on weekends, with Tuesdays closed.

A little way in from Hwangridan-gil's main alley, I found the small wood-toned shop. Out front were a standing sign showing a cross-section of an apple and a notice listing when the pies come out.

Could I still buy the flavors I wanted after lunch?

When I visited after lunch, the chocolate flavor was already sold out, and only one red bean flavor pie remained. It was disappointing for choosing from several flavors.

The signature apple flavor was still available, so I chose apple pies.

Rather than a café with plenty of seating, the shop was a compact space centered on baking and packing pies for takeout and gift sets. The sweet buttery smell of baking spread into the alley.

The posted baking times were 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM, with fresh pies made twice a day.

What did the apple pie gift set cost, and how was it packaged?

We ordered the six-piece apple pie gift set for ₩26,500. It was ₩500 cheaper than buying six individual pies, and it came in a dedicated box with a cherry blossom pattern.

Information about Gyeongju Tokyo Pie apple pie gift sets

The golden-brown baked pies caught my eye. There were also stacks of apple boxes in the shop.

The gift box looked neat, so I thought it would work well as a travel souvenir to give someone.

The box was illustrated with cherry blossoms, Cheomseongdae, and Tokyo Tower. When I opened it, six large apple pies were individually wrapped in brown parchment paper.

Did the coffee served with it pair well with the pie?

At the time of my visit, participating in a Naver receipt photo-review event came with a free iced Americano, listed at ₩3,900. I took part and received the coffee.

The pie surface had a shine from its egg wash. The iced Americano I received was low in acidity and nutty, and it paired well with the sweet pie.

What were the texture and flavor of the apple pie like?

When I took a bite, the layered pastry crumbled with a crisp crackle. The nutty butter flavor and flaky texture were memorable.

The filling had large apple pieces, giving it a crisp fruit texture. The apple's tang and sweetness went well with the nutty butteriness, and both my husband and I enjoyed it.

My child took a bite and kept eating it too. It suited a snack while strolling Hwangridan-gil or a travel gift to share with family. Still, as happened when we went, some flavors can sell out early.
